      CrusherTV Thanks! And he really is! I've been applying this "just start" mindset to different tasks that are normally difficult to get started on & complete, and though I still struggle, I'm much more productive because of it.

    Thanks okay. I had begun to use the "start" of the NEXT project to power me through completion of the ...one that's been running way way over time. Will try to shift into start/start mode. Should work so long as I do a lot of "REstarting".

  • @RadishTheFool
    @RadishTheFool Před 11 měsíci +4

    I'm watching a lot of ADHD videos, trying to see patterns and collecting strategies. I call it 'circling a problem.' And I've noticed one huge predictor of whether a video is going to be helpful.
    It's not how old the video is, it's not someone's scientific pedigree, it's whether someone is ADHD themselves.
    And there are two ways to know whether that is the case: does the video start quickly and to the point, in ways that engage attention, and does the person talk from their own ADHD perspective.
    I just came from a ten-year old video of an ADHD "specialist" giving "advice" that people with ADHD should be structuring our days, work towards healthy sleeping habits, and build routines. Basically: living our lives as if we don't have ADHD.
    It's like telling a person in a wheelchair that they should be working towards walking on their legs because it's so much easier and more convenient than using a wheelchair.
    And then there is your old videos, still as relevant today as they were then. And I'm so happy that more and more people with ADHD are finding each other now, so that we can think and work together on making our lives easier in ways that work with our brains.

    Thank you! I may or may not have ADHD, but I definitely have a driving phobia. Sometimes I just have to get my shoes on and get out to the car, and once I'm buckled up, I can almost always get myself to drive. Same concept, just get it started and don't think so negatively the finish line. I'll do my best to apply this to my chronic procrastination. It's a struggle, but I can't give up.

      @ADDCrusher Před 5 lety +4

      Jeff talks about that paralysis -- so common and frustrating, especially when we "try to make [our]self finish in a certain time period" -- just adds to the stress. Which is exactly why I say, don't worry about finishing. Just worry about STARTING! Keep starting and the finishing will happen. Hang in there and keep on crushing it!

    Maybe this video has tidbits of truth, but my house is filled with lots of starts that are unfinished...
    repair this, paint that, pressure wash this, build that..... a lot of things that I got exited about starting, but never finished... and my wife is frustrated with all the unfinished things around the house and yard too...
    So permission to start is good, but I got to finish, and that’s my issue..

    • @AttentionTalkVideo
      @AttentionTalkVideo  Před 4 lety +1

      Starting not finishing is a brain hack to shift your mindset. Often i find project hit the skids for those with ADHD when they are just plain boring. In such situations consider doing it with another person. The other reason (like 75% of procrastination) is rooted in ambiguity. Struggling to make a decision, not clear what to do, were to find something, or unclear on how something works. If that is the case the key to moving forward is to identify what isn't clear and solve for that.

    • @mikahbee
      @mikahbee Před 9 lety +1

      Apparently I did crush it, beneath piles of clutter and depression. OOPS.
      I do find that the starting usually gives me enough motivation and increases my self-esteem enough to actually keep going. So the five minutes I intended to spend may turn into an hour of doing this project and finishing it too, WHOA!
      But this was a great reminder and was highly motivating. Really very interesting learning about the cortisol production when our body is in certain positions. That's really fascinating and makes a lot of sense. Thanks to both of you for putting it together :D

      Another talk I watched gave the insight of learning & research, each project I start I tend to do until the point of having gained the knowledge I initially sought from implementing it, the interest peters out because the gains diminish, so with each 'unfinished project' I have actually 'finished' some of the underlying reasons for starting it. Avoiding self negative talk is always worth doing, nothing good comes from a point of stress.

    • @AttentionTalkVideo
      @AttentionTalkVideo  Před 5 lety

      Great post. in another video i talk about how often a project is to learn what it is like to do something. Once learned you move on. Thus you learned what it was like to be a carpenter but the remodeling of the bathroom isn't complete.
      this is very common for those with ADHD. Awareness of this helps you plan and make decisions from you choose to proceed.
