    The Black Crows released their cover of the song Hard to Handle in the year 1990. The song was originally released by, singer Otis Redding in 1968.

      @C Summers,
      This is nothing against Otis Redding, but the Black Crows cover has so much more style in the singing and music.
      I just find it hard to believe that it was released in 1990. I thought the Black Crows released it way later.

    This isong was originally recorded by Otis Redding back in the mid-1960's, that's probably why you get an "old song" feel from this. Otis' original was very good, but these guys did it justice.

    • @TTM9691
      @TTM9691 Před 2 lety +1

      It's more like Otis' version is fantastic, and this version is milquetoast. It's barely a cover of Otis, it's more of a cover of The Grateful Dead without the great funky instrumental interplay in the middle.

    • @waynefurrow845
      @waynefurrow845 Před 2 lety

      @@TTM9691 I'm a big Otis Redding Fan, but I enjoyed this cover, I thought they did a good job of modernizing the song, without loosing the old school feel to it. I did not know that the Greatful Dead covered this song, but I was never a fan of that band, so I have never heard their version.

    • @TTM9691
      @TTM9691 Před 2 lety

      @@waynefurrow845 Well, believe me.....The Black Crowes were fans of the Dead. And The Black Crowes didn't "modernize" it (how could they? They were a retro band from the beginning) You could have taken their arrangement and plopped it in the 70s or the late 60s and it would have been exactly the same. I'm not sure you understand what "modernizing" is, unless you simply mean recording it on 48-track instead of 4-track.

    The Original was Released in 1968 as a B- side to the song
    " Amen ". It Peaked on the Billboard R&B Charts at No. 38 and @ No. 51 on the Billboard Pop Charts. Unfortunately Otis passed in 67' so he would never have an opportunity to perform the song live. The Black Crowes version Peaked at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Reached No.1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts. Many were ( and still are ) under the impression that this was a Black Crowes Original which isn't a stretch to believe after hearing how they arranged the instrumental and how Chris Robinson delivered the Vocals. The Black Crowes didn't stray far from Otis's version and Chris Robinson even kept the overall delivery of the " Hard To Handle Chorus section " with its Iconic Cadence only changing it in an extremely subtle way ( " Hey little thing let me light your candle cause(a) Momma I'm sure Hard To Handle and I Gets Around " ) by extending the overall length of the actual verbal delivery where Otis had a Specific way he delivered the same line. I personally know people who were Teens/20's in 1968 and do not remember ever hearing the Otis Redding version ( which due to it being a B-side wouldn't have received much airplay on any major stations ) Those same people however remember when the song was released by the Black Crowes in 1990 and many were under the impression that it was simply an Original due to the fact that it was right up their alley as far as style and lyrical content. Some have said that due to Otis being a Black Musician that it may have affected the popularity of the song however in my opinion , in 1968 just after his untimely death in 67' , ( Which thrust Otis's popularity into an even more mainstream setting ) That year would become known as the Summer of Love and the Original iconic Woodstock would take place in August of 68' ... Black Musicians were absolutely destroying barriers when it came to their music getting played on all of the Mainstream Major Radio Stations. The Hippie Culture had taken over and Color was no longer recognized unless it was Rainbow Colors. Hendrix was one of , if Not the biggest Musician in the world and there were many more Black Musicians that were paving the way for tons of Musicians of Color. James Brown had been clawing at those Barriers since the 50's and was also EXTREMELY instrumental in making Black music accepted within the often segregated Music Scene. In 68' there was no longer the " Negro cirucut " or the " Chitlin Circut " ... Black musicians were now able to play in what were once Predominantly White Venues and the crowds were no longer being segregated. Musicians like Otis Redding , Sam Cooke , Jimi Hendrix and Still going strong in 68', One of my all time personal favorites Mr. James Brown ... They all influenced an entire Generation of new Musicians and when The Black Crowes hit the scene on the late 80's and then released their Album in 1990 " Shake Your Money Maker " featuring the Otis Redding Cover of Hard to Handle , It was then completely socially acceptable and normal for Bands to Cover songs and Musicians who were Black. It had been for decades at that point but being that The Black Crowes were a " Southern Rock Band " They would have grown up hearing and listening to all things Black Music in the South which is where they got their " Church Soul " heard in Chris's Vocals , The iconic " Church Organ which can be heard in many of their songs as well as their Funk influences with some of their Guitar parts. Both versions of the song are amazing but in my personal Opinion , The Black Crowes Version ( they actually released two versions , the Studio cut which is most often played and heard and their second version added the Iconic " Otisesque " Brass Section to the song like the Original Redding Version ) of Hard to Handle is the best version of the song. They kept enough of the Original Redding Version to offer nothing but respect and to pay Homage to Otis but they added enough of their own Southern Rock , heavily guitar driven influence to make the song their own to the point where again , Many were and still are under the impression that the Black Crowes version is an Original. This song is Timeless and is always a really feel good party song that puts ya in a phenomenal mood when it starts playing. Much Respect to the Legend Otis Redding because without Otis we wouldn't even have this song to begin with. An absolute Classic through and through.

    The way Run DMC were inspired by Walk This Way from Aerosmith to merge classic rock with hip hop, music of the future, same way Crows (drummer Steve Gorman cited Walk This Way as an inspiration for drumming on this track) took the classic rock to the past and dressed a classic soul track from the 60s into it. Goes without saying that classic soul tracks influenced all of it in the first place.

    Worth noting that this came out a year before Nirvana's "Nevermind" record. Which is simply to say that there was an anti-big-hair rock movement before grunge. This record was huge, and was such a relief after a decade of spandex and pointy guitars and, for that matter, flat-topped and slick r&b in which the guys were starting to wear matching outfits again. The Crowes' reward from the critical establishment? They were called "pretentious" and never respected when they were popular (don't know what today's critics think). Eh, what can ya do.

    The two Robinson brothers are fabulously talented - the whole band is solid, so many hits! Remedy is a huge hit for them but Sometimes Salvation is on heavy rotation and such a powerful song/video. They also did a Led Zeppelin concert tour with Jimmy Page and they do a hell of a job with my favorite band!

    Check out the original artist who wrote this. Otis Redding. I saw footage of him playing in England in the late 60's I believe. The crowd had 2 types of people in it. One group sitting there with thier mouths open straight shook at the groove and spectacle that Otis Redding was. Clearly digging him big-time. The other group was dancing singing and going straight nuts to his performance. I think it's Love and Tenderness he was singing. OG badass!

    Written by the late great Otis Redding. It was released posthumously, and the Black Crowes of course loved Otis. This song was also an early live staple of the Grateful Dead.
