- I found these weird GameBoy accessories online, none of which I have previously seen or hears of. Suprisingly some of these are actually licenced by Nintendo! Did you have any back in the day?

I remember in elementary school there was this kid Mitchell who was a shit bag with a bowl cut, haven't thought about him in years, and he had the illuminator.. was trying to enjoy my Sunday Elliot...
Hey Matt I’m really sorry to have brought up this bad memory for you. I really hope Mitchell is doing well because no one deserves failure. However I hope he’s thinking of you, and thinking only of the sweetest sweetest things. Because Matt you are so sweet please let me hold you.
MattColbo x The Retro Future merch please

I always catch myself thinking "Who buys these?!", then I realize these companies obviously make these accessories for Elliot to unbox in the future.
It all makes sense now.
Lol
And Sendico are clearly just enabling him - "What's that? You own all the Western Nintendo devices? Well... come this way, we want to show you something..."
I remember having some sort of light for my Game Boy Color, back when I was a kid. Lights while most of them are not great, were a must when playing in the dark.
I was really glad when I got a GBA SP, it was so much more comfortable.
@@qlum Nyko Worm Light? I remember it being a staple for many of road trips during my childhood once the sun fell. I never got a regular GBA and went straight to an SP. It was life changing!
Mostly well meaning but clueless relatives looking for a cheap birthday or Christmas present without fully understanding the device they're buying for or how the accessory works.
Gameboy: has survived bombs in literal war zones
Rhino skin: we can do better
only the original gameboy to be fair, the gameboy advance can't withstand a light breeze
@ATepClips That wasn’t an accident, someone assaulted your gameboy, and someone must pay
@@commander_frog Agreed
The packaging on the plastic cases are sharper than most knives out there.
World's sharpest blister pack knife
Well there's a channel that makes knives out of unconventional materials
and that's a fact!
*casually sharpens box*
My sister bought a new set of knives that came in that crappy packaging and she texted me a picture of it with the caption "If only I had something sharp to open this with..."
I had the Flo Light. It was easily my favorite early GBA accessory. The illumination it provided was pretty cool, and I liked that it folded down to protect the screen when not in use. A nice touch is how the light was exposed when folded down, which gave it a cool "flashlight" feature with the momentary "try me" button on the front. Gamester did a great job with that one.
yea I was thinking that, it looks like you can stand it up on a table or something
looks like it would have been great as a camping light for a kid
That Illuminator thing at the end is straight out the 80s with its dim little bulb. I guess it was one step above holding a torch (with equally bad bulb) while trying to play a game in the dark.
Yeah, it's literally from before bright LEDs existed at all, let alone white ones. The double arm one is from when they already existed and were still horrible blue + yellow to make it look white but atrocious for screens. It's no real wonder why Nintendo stuck with no light for so long after we look at what Sega, Atari and NEC had to do to get their color screens lit (Also Nintendo themselves on the GB Light).
at least you dont have to hold it
And those bulbs have a better CRI than LEDs
A torch? I'm not sure I'd want to hold a flaming stick next to my GameBoy.
@@SproutyPottedPlant Yep, specially early white ones like I said above, tho for the original GB not much of a problem either
I can't get enough of your videos dude these are so freaking cool

“Sorry, my cheap-feeling, boney-looking friend...”
I’m sure He-Man once said that to Skeletor. ;P
That moment you realize Skeletor is really just wearing a bikini.
Wish I could travel back in time and give my younger self that Gamester flo-light. Looks absolutely brilliant.
I've had the "Rino-Skin case on my GBA-SP from day one, about 16 years now, and it still works flawlessly. My GBA-SP still looks like new as well. Great product!
They made a version for the DSi also and I still use it.
You wear a fanny pack on occasion, don’t you?

I've had a Flo Light for about some years now! Great to see it in action here
I had that accessory back in the day. I definitely remember it had a reputation for being one of the better light options available at the time.
@@akaJughead Yep!
Don't ever remember seeing one out in the wild - we certainly never had them to sell, where I work, but it does look really rather good! Even after all these years! :-)
when I first got my gameboy advance I actually had a flo light, made things easier when playing Metroid (and now Pokemon Creepy Black).
I got one recently from a relative with their GBA and I was surprised to see it here! It works pretty well here.
Anyone else thinks the gba SP case looks like an airplane seatbelt?
I DO
Now I do
I have never seen somebody look *this* well put together and stylish in just a simple hoodie and a cap.
I'm honestly impressed. :0
That first lighting device was surprisingly good
have you ever thought about mounting like some camera on a headband for the gameplay shots? that way you could probably get the POV nearly at eyelevel
Your videos are so entertaining yet also oddly calming to watch, i always look forward to them
Hey Elliot, I just realized I've been watching your content for a little over a year now! You're the most consistent CZcamsr I've watched! All my other channels usually end up going in a different creative direction than what I'm looking for, but your content is always top notch, high quality and very reliable. Thank you for the work you put into this, it's very obvious how much it really does mean to you
You are too good at showing off products! I legit was thinking about getting the gameboy advance light (the one that worked well) and then realized "wait thats like forever ago i don't need to worry about this"
its never fails to amaze me how many different screen lights there are
I think it would be interesting to watch you go through the RumbleFX and repair it.
I remember trying exactly one light for my Gameboy way back when and being so underwhelmed by it that I didn't bother to check any others out. That Flologht looks pretty decent, though.
Thank for sharing these with us!
I had one of those Gamester lights. It came in a bundle with the GBA and some other accessories. It was nice to play Pokemon Sapphire late into the night but it when through batteries like crazy. I had to save up to buy 2 sets of rechargeable AAs (4 AAs in each) which was cheaper than buying regular alkalines in the long run.
This video made me grateful for how much humanity has calmed down with that unnecessary *thick* blister packaging. The number of times those drew blood from me as a kid 😂
Terrible things... sadly still used at times! :-(
Worst design for packaging.... Ever!
@@stevesstuff1450 and they don't even hold up well! I remember a collector talking about how difficult it is to get stuff like N64 controllers mint
@@stevesstuff1450 i mean, they where meant to be terrible, to make shoplifting harder, you cant rip it open in store easy, and they are often far larger then required so they cant be put into pockets as easy
“Hold it with me fingers”
Love it
Yo why does that thumbnail make it look like the Gameboy has one of those backpacks the Ghost Busters wear?
You mean an unlicensed nuclear accelerator, aka a proton pack?
I mean, yea, it really does, doesn't it?
Who are u gonna call, GAme BoY
I’m so glad I read comments sometimes
The Flo-light accessory has to be the my favorite, really seems to do the job. The other two looked like small street lights.
I just found your channel like 2 days ago, and I am hooked!
“Look at this primitive bulb as if Edison made it yesterday” 😂
every time he says "very cool" he sounds like a grandpa reviewing nintendo products on christmas trying to talk to their annoying grandchildren
I remember the flowlight, it was by far the best GBA light I ever found. Such a nice even light with no weird spots of glare. Of course I had no use for it when I got my GBA-SP lol
I love this!! I had the rumble speaker and the flo light for the advance when I was a kid and I honestly forgot all about them! This is amazing, more like this please
Elliot: "I'll link that in the card"
*2000 years later*
Me: "i'm still waiting for it to show up"
I had the flo light when I was a kid absolute game changer for gba night play only downside was the added weight but the trade off was so worth it absolutely loved my flo light awesome video as always Elliot
It seems like the Gameboy has thousands of weird accessories
So does the DS and the PSP
That's cheap trend marketing 101 - find a popular thing, find a way to "improve" it the cheapest way possible, send out a hundred thousand units of your solution, make it seem like an "essential accessory" that will "elevate the customer's experience", and wait for the money to roll in. It also helps if you don't target the primary consumer directly but instead market your product to the people associated with the primary consumer who don't understand the main product, the more gullible and easily confused they are the better.
Guaranteed the majority of these weird accessories that were actually sold were bought by well meaning grandparents, uncles, aunts and parents who thought they had a home run gift for a birthday, Christmas or other special occasion and had zero clue about what they were getting.
Don't forget the workboy keyboard for the first gameboy.
Oh wow! I remember me and my sister having those exact flolight for our GBAs! I guess it was also sold in Canada as well. Careful with the clip that holds the bottom of the screen, it's very delicate...
The one accessory I recall getting my nephew for the original GameBoy was a light. It was a purple bendy stick with an LED on the end and it plugged into some port which it used for power.
I recall being impressed that the cost of white LEDs had come down to that point; early LED flashlights worth using were quite expensive.
I just recently discovered your channel. Great videos. Keep up the good work!
I've had a Rhino Skin since I got my GBA SP, got it at a mall game store going out of business in Michigan, they had a few others; it must've just gotten tossed once it didn't sell but it's actually kept my SP safe from dozens of drops and bangs! I would fully recommend it if you can find one.
Awesome video!!! I had the Illuminator light when I was a kid!! I had completely forgotten about it till now!!!🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
FINALLY!! I was waiting for next video where u present freaky strange gameboy accessories
me: about to do work
Retro Future: uploads a video
me: ... gotta watch a video about Game Boy accessories!
Congratulations on the new home my dude!
The last item reminded me of an atomic purple worm light I had for my GBC back in the 90s. The light was dim AF but it was good enough to play pokemon in a dark room.
Today we transformed gameboys into
-a rabbit
-an angler fish
-a department store
-a zippo lighter
"It's as if Edison had made it yesterday." Haha great video as usual. Keep it up!
Elliot always keeps me entertained
Hey mate:) congrats on the video! I really enjoyed this as an end to my sunday.
I waned to ask what you are filming with. Could you give us noobs a short presentation on your setup please:D
The Illuminator ismy favourite. It reminded my on how I lay in bed, my duvet over my head so my parents can't see me playing and a mini maglight in my mouth to see the screen
Sooo long ago
So odd... I pulled an old box out earlier from some storage and saw my old GBA from when I was a kid and it had that purple rumble speaker attached to it, then I come here just to check one your new vids and you try to review it lol. For anyone wondering, it was a good option for a rechargeable battery and had good sound from what I remember but It was a bit of a lead weight. I don't remember anything about the rumble though so it couldn't of been that good :P
I love these old weird accessory videos elliot😁👍🏽👍🏽🤜🏽🤛🏻
I had a rhino skin for my Tapwave Zodiac. It was also kind of sharp, but the metal casing is pretty cool. I wanted one for my mobile phone until I realised it would make the wifi and bluetooth stop working.
I like this type of content. Reminds me of Stop Skeleton from Fighting with reviewing weird peripherals.
2:10 I absolutely abhore that military-grade ballistic packaging with every fibre of my being. It's one of the things I really miss from my time living in Japan; packaging there is almost always convenient and well thought out. I remember being in awe when my phone came in a simple plastic bag with an easy access zipcord at the top. Meanwhile, here in the UK you need scissors to open your new scissors.
Very weird! Thanks for showcasing these
They used to make cases that same way for a lot of phones. I know I had one for my Palm Pilot back in the day that kept it safe through a lot of abuse when I worked IT at GE Appliance Park.
I’ve had a rhino skin on my GBA SP for years. It has never scratched the top or anywhere else. It feels amazing.
wow! I'm surprised how well that light worked! You can see it so clearly and the light is so well diffused that you can see the entire hand held clearly. I would've loved a light like that as a kid.
Elliot, I would LOVE to see you upgrade the LEDs (+diffuser) in the gba arm, and the illuminator. I'm sure you could find a screw in LED replacement for the illuminator, so you wouldn't have to "mod it" per se.
Cool gadgets, I would have loved to have any of these back in the day. I had to make do with one of those book LED lights that could grab onto the book. I'd sit on the bed, console in hands and light on my chest aiming at the screen... I got through Metroid Fusion with that setup so it wasn't too bad but it wasn't ideal either.
These days I have a black GBA, much like yours and I modded mine a long while ago with the AGS 101 screen (IPS mod wasn't too popular at the time) and glass lens. The good ol' games I used to love as a kid I now love even more because I can actually see what everything actually looks like.
The case may not be great for a pristine Gameboy but for carrying around the one you actually use.
I still have my Flo light. I called it my flood light
Please make more accessories vids! I freaking love them!!!!
That was my favorite item of today’s video. Thanks m8 for making great content to invest my time for entertainment purposes!
watching you excited about something in a video makes my day
It's actually a cute little bulb in The Illuminator (I feel like Doofenshmirtz saying this name). This brings memories back in childhood where we used incandescent lamps.
Imagine the vibes back in the day in the dark in ur room playing game boy with the light attachment
Elliot, I really liked the Gamster Flow Light! It looked compact, and had a great light! I'm sure it made the GBA a lot heavier though with taking 3 AA batteries. Just out of curiosity, but after you open brand new items, do you keep the box or packaging it was in?
I had the rhino skin back in the day. Made it great to just chuck in my bag and not worry at all about the gbsp
A spring hinged case like this would absolutely save so many of those floppy DS lite systems that are perfectly fine but the hinge is so loose it wont stay by itself. It would be such a great solution rather than junking the systems or putting effort into swapping shells
That's some good looking lighting right there!
Congrats on the new house!
God your videos are so addicting! I'm inspired to go out and get a gameboy now lmao
I’m gonna have to check eBay for one of those Flo Lights! That looked really good.
Weird, but cool. I like the flo light.
Eliot: "that's not going in very well"
me: "don't say it, don't even think it!"
my brain: "tHat'S wHaT sHe SaId!!!"
Love that Gamester light- I am going to see if I can find one...
aww man back i. the day when to play in the dark we had a big blind spot where the bulb was directly on the screen haha
while obviously the favorite was the aluminum case as that was fairly well made. i think a repair/mod video for the rumble fx would be interesting, replacing the battery and switching the rumble motor for a sub.
I had the first Gameboy advice light you showed. I barely used it made it so heavy
The Illuminator gives off the vibe of being a pioneer, playing Game Boy by candlelight.
I actually had that Flo Light as a kid, didnt use it all the time but it was a godsend on roadtrips
Nice video the retro future, I'm about 6 minutes in and I'm curious if you'd ever do a video on the micro having no plastic frame replacements or how you would go about fixing a micro with a broken plastic frame? Thanks and I'm a huge fan!
i had that folding light for my gba. i also had a black gba too so that was basically my setup. i hated all other lights because it always glared. this on the other hand was absolutely perfect. got a lot of use out of it too because i never ended up getting a backlit gameboy of any kind.
I remember that rhino case, I always wanted one but it was really expensive (at least for a child). It cost something about like $40 bucks, a little more than the device I wanted to protect.
Random question but how do you like that CRKT knife? I've been wanting to get one for a while but I don't know how nice that form factor is
I would have killed for the Flolight back in the day. Best gameboy light I've ever seen
I had the Illuminator as a kid! Made playing at after bedtime or in the car at night possible, but wasn't the best experience if I remember correctly.
I had that flo light for so long, it still works through the major abuse it took when I was a kid. Thing was chonky but got the job done
I had the Gameboy Light Player which was a cool gadget that let you play your GameBoy in the dark and it was one me and my sister used with the original GameBoy
Imagine adding Power Rumble FX & Flo Light to a GameBoy Advance. Probably looks ridiculous, but must play SPLENDIDLY!!!
You are so underrated you deserve more subs
Fun fact: my Walmart still have the game boy advance logo on the part of the consoles and video games
I had that flo light back in the day. Used it on road trips and late night under the covers pokemon.
The florescent light was actually really good, but with back-lit lcd mods I'll never go back.
The OG gameboy looks like it’s about to go scuba diving with the illuminator
Remember when Video Game Nerd did this? If so, you get a veteran discount.
Oh I didn't miss the silly light accessories
I had the Nuby Game Light when I was a kid. I remember it working really well.
I remember these things I had these for my game systems. Even the ones for the Game Gear, Sega's Gameboy.
I like the light I had for GBcolor. Clipped on the top and had a magnifying glass pannel with two lights.
These accessories look awesome. The little problem is... When you need that every time you should to have to each place, and it is very weight. And I did don't know that these exists
