Who else knew that plugging a controller into the second port when the gun was in the first port meant you could control the duck and make it zig-zag across the screen? My cousin and I used to do that to my sister all the time and she always wondered why the duck flew so mad when it was her go! lol

CRT light guns generally worked by tracking the location of the CRT electron beam responsible for the image projection to determine where the gun was pointing and checks the color, hence the white square seen with each trigger click. As a result, movement tracking using light guns were far faster than motion controls of today.

They check white light. U can point it on any light source and never miss.
It's all about the timing. The white box is to increase the brightness and contrast to increase the chances of detection of the CRT beam. Turning up the brightness of the CRT was always recommended.
The zapper is not a light gun. There would be no reason to flash that rectangle if it was, anything but pure black works for those. It is just a dumb light sensor that can read bright (duck) or dark (rest).

Sheppard Lawn Services I, too, owned the NES with the Mario Bros/Duck Hunt cartridge back when my sisters and i were younger. What gun/guns did you own for the Duck Hunt game? We owned both the blue gun controller and the red gun controller! They weren't those zappers like what was used in the game either! :D My preferred controller was the red gun! lol

The Mario/Duck Hunt combo was my 1st game. I sucked at Duck Hunt, but loved that gun. 32 yrs later I get the aim controller gun, on ps4 :) Nintendo needs to re-release Duck Hunt with a gun for the Switch. It's an old game, but is still fun for kids.

Brandon 360 They used a CRT TV is all. Not a LED or a LCD since they dont work on those sadly. Unless they modded the Zapper to work with them.

I got an NES when it was still being sold new, I'm twice as old as most of these kids and I DID NOT KNOW UNTIL JUST NOW that you can select the game with the zapper. Mind = blown.
Kinda funny, in retrospect, that we actually had such an accurate peripheral for a game like this in the eighties...
...but the better technology got, the worst the accuracy got. (looking at you, Wii! Splatoon gets a pass, tho)
They tried replicating it multiple times in future Nintendo consoles none will match the NES Zapper

The gun is long gone as is the console. I got it second hand and it broke not long after that. I think I still have the game cartridges somewhere though. There was a fighting game with two guys in karate gear who would move left and right on a white line with a plain blue background!

Redrick Orton I like that game but I prefer the second one since I don't have to worry about dying every time I hit water, no annoying egg thiefs and I no longer had to keep hearing those many dragons going "Thank you for releasing me.". Though the old one that said it I always got a laugh from. If Spyro 2 has a downside it's that f-ing cheapskate Moneybags. I always use this cheat code I found that gives me all the abilities you learn in the game so I don't have to pay him a single gem.

I was kinda hoping they'd have discussed the technology behind the zapper at the end of the video, though. It's such an interesting way of sensing whether or not you're pointing the gun at the target.
Kepe They had another zapper game as well, in which you were a cowboy and had to shoot the bad guys and avoid shooting women that would pop up as targets as well. After each level there was a duel with a "boss".
Kepe Fun fact: the zapper only works on old CRT TV's, and will not work on new lcd or led screens.

yeah it's because when you use it, it takes pictures of the screen, and CRT televisions used red green and blue lights tightly clustered to create colors, that's why they were less sharp, but the zapper doesn't properly read the colors from led and lcd screens because of the way they're designed, so the zapper doesn't work.

Because they were meant to be fun, there was no graphic war or power console war like gamers today started
just simpler, games like this and Tetris and Pac Man, are so simple in their goal but it's always challenging yourself. So many games these days try to be so many things, they can't warrant just being a shooter or a puzzle game or a platformer they try to get as big an audience as possible. This is where Valve have been so good a game like Portal, it was simple, great story and arguably one of the best games of the last 10 years and thats why. There isn't much there to go wrong and what is there is polished to a mirror shine.

Rail shooters were awesome. They just weren't home portable at the time. To the extent of this game. Then again house of the dead probably did have a port to a home console..
