Silverchair are one of my favorite bands of all time! Their first 4 albums are amazing and they did really grow as a band. The one that this song is on is on the 4th one. Their 5th/final album kind of departed from their 'normal' sound and I still to this day haven't gotten fully into it but I appreciate it as a whole. If/when they reunite I would go anywhere to see them. I got to see them a few times and they were great.

      I love the final album.
      Though I love all silverchair
      Gutted when they split.
But got to see them multiple times live.
      Pray one day they reform

Dudes. The history of Silverchair is very interesting. Close ties to Nirvana, Daniel Johns, the lead vocalist/songwriter/artistic director was married (maybe not officially?) to Natalie Imbruglia for years. This album, Diorama, strays from their heavier grunge rock roots and is a coming out party for Johns’ vocal range, paired beautifully with an orchestral explosion and wildcard chord progressions.
Diorama (in my partially educated, partially drunk opinion) is this band’s Pet Sounds, steered by a too-talented-for-his-own-good Daniel Johns and an A1 pit crew of producers and engineers.
Check out some live performances too. Daniel will throw in a random Xtina vocal riff just to show he can before he bursts in with a vocal deep-fry.

There actually weren't close ties to Nirvana at all - they were more influenced by their father's record collections. There was an infamous time when Courtney was at a festival they were at and was quoted as saying "where's the guy that sings like Eddie Vedder and looks like my dead husband". The Petsounds reference is interesting - this is the album that Van Dyke Parks worked on with them! Totally agree re live performances, you won't find many were the songs sound the same from gig to gig and over time. He has a new album out - FutureNever and there is a track with Van Dyke Parks on it.

Just my two cents but, when silverchair burst onto the scene in the mid 90’s, I was the same age as them. After All These Years, I still am. I didn’t take them all that seriously then, until I heard the album Neon Ballroom. Their third album that they released at the ripe old age of 19-20. I was a massive fan after that and to this day, I don’t think that there’s many bands who who I can confidently say, each album is better than their last. Expect for Diorama, which came out before their last album Young Modern. Ok, I’ve ranted about this band enough. I think they’re one of the most successful yet, under appreciated bands of all time. Just my two cents.

the song's about dreaming and how weird the imageries are and meanings we pull from them can be... like the line "I hugged a man's arthritic shoulder" like what? Huh? But that's exactly what dreaming is... it's subjectively weird and objectively odd, both personal and alien

I always found it weird that there’s the reference to arthritis in this song, and After All These Years contains the lyrics “mend in my sleep, I’m boxing underwater”. Apparently during his bout of reactive arthritis he spent a lot of time in an oxygen tent and had to go through physical therapy. Did he sense his upcoming physical ailments in some way while he was writing Diorama?

silverchair a coupla surfer dudes from Newcastle were favoured cause they were 17 years olds ..Australia like all countries has the mad rush for garage bands...once used it is on to the next...the lead singer after fame turned into anerexic drug addled nit and was seduced by a homosexual witch up in Katoomba about 40 miles west of Sydney...Last I saw of him....lot of ''sweeterner'' strings applied..

@@SightAfterDark the information above is completely wrong There are a lot of angry fans because Daniel didn't want to write depressing, angry music anymore. There is a great new podcast on Spotify that is going viral, called who is Daniel Johns. There's a aide of Australia that loves to tear down the greats, its an actual culture thing.

They were actually 15 when they wrote their debut ep. You speak as if being anorexic is something to be ashamed of? And that being gay is somehow bad? Regardless Daniel isn’t gay (like that even matters) and he is now happy and healthy. Imagine being able to do whatever you want at the age of 40, mega props to him!

@@lunar-tick4310 anorexia was not the boys problem..he was hiding a drug problem..my problem is with that warlock from Katoomba that seduced him...what was his name Paul Mac...being gay is someone elses problem not mine..I don't care what peccadilloes a man has..if a man wants to play dingle dangle dingle with the personal equipment of the same sex then go forth...I should be able to enjoy action with my pug dog..Look to be serious because they were young when they arrived many people think that at 17 they did well that they are going to get better in a linear sense..It does not happen....People who have anorexia are not aware they have a problem..so why would they be ashamed of it...
