Yes. Please check out how they evolved. These guys are legends. They’re quite diverse with heavy hard rock songs, grunge songs, slower emotional experimental pieces with string orchesta etc. Like they started with melodic grunge and evolved into art.

    "Were they famous?"
Um, this was THE most played song on American radio in 1995 and won best single that year or whatever. They were on MTV every 45 minutes. And the actual retail studio version is so good it's actually much more impressive than Nirvana. Truly, I'm not even saying that to be contrarian. Nirvana couldn't do that at 15.
Which btw the song was first recorded at 13! Then for Australia at 14 then MTV in the US at 15 for the last music video. This was right after he turned 16, I believe. He quit this song around 2000 because I believe he got tired of it and that glissando vibrato thing at the end of the second verse bugged him. He had jaw issues from some kind of eating disorder and weird stuff like that going on.

As a young band they definitely wore their influences on their sleeves, but as they matured their sound definitely evolved. The Neon Ballroom album is a fantastic mix of grungey hard rock and quite progressive, poppy, Beatles-esque sounds.
Ana's Song is a crowning glory. At first listen it's a melancholic love song, but it actually details Daniel Johns (vocalist/guitarist) battle with anorexia

Pure Massacre, Israel’s Son were also hits there. I think their popularity decreased because their record company released Abuse Me as the first single off their 2nd album (probably wanted more radio airplay but big mistake) which most young people couldn’t relate to and sounded kinda gay before gay was accepted. While in Australia and several other countries they released Freak first instead.

It's funny you're making honest sonic and visual comparisons to Nirvana, it's a comparison that haunted them for their first year, and the comparison was often made with condescension. They really came into their own in their subsequent albums, reeling in many diehard fans. In a recent episode of the Silverchair retrospective podcast Too Much of Not Enough, their long time collaborator, producer Nick Launay, was quite positive about doing another rock record with at least Daniel. Oh man, I hope it happens!

For some reason the algorithm gave me this today. I looked up your other videos and saw you had no further Silverchair reactions. Oh are you in for a treat. Hope you get this comment.
Daniel Johns, the singer/guitarist, is a bona fide musical prodigy. He once wrote nearly an entire album on piano (Diorama). So what you ask? Lots of people do that. But he did it, writing some of the most complex, Beatles on a good day, melodies and arrangements in pop music, literally as he was teaching himself how to play the instrument. He has moved from somewhat generic, if a little quirky, rock, to heavy orchestration, baroque, operatic, electronic, ambient, R&B/soul and is pretty much equally adept in all these genres. Standout tracks include (in more or less chronological order)
    Silverchair:
    Israel’s Son
    Pure Massacre
    Freak
Abuse Me (featuring a nailed in one take backwards guitar solo)
    Petrol and Chlorine
Emotion Sickness (live at São Paulo preferred)
Ana’s Song (listen to the contrast between live versions in the early 2000s and the Young Modern tour)
    Steam Will Rise
    Across the Night
Tuna in the Brine (mind-blowing orchestral pop rock featuring Van Dyke Parks, who notably worked with Brian Wilson/the Beach Boys)
After All These Years (beautiful piano ballad composed shortly after learning how to play piano)
    The Dissociatives:
    Horror with Eyeballs
    Young Man, Old Man
    Forever and a Day
    Back to Silverchair:
    Straight Lines
    Those Thieving Birds/Strange Behavior
    Mind Reader
All Across the World (IMO one of their best tracks and so underrated, another Van Dyke Parks collar)
    Daniel Johns solo:
    Preach
    Late Night Drive
    New York
    Imagination
    Reclaim Your Heart
    Mansions
    I Feel Electric
Emergency Calls Only (another Van Dyke Parks collab)
FreakNever (a broken mirror reflection of Silverchair’s original Freak, 20+ years later - it’s one of the creepiest/heartbreaking things you’ll ever hear)
    When We Take Over

Sadly, I think the boys are in “reunion tours only” mode these days, mostly due to the Daniel Johns’ health issues. If you want an idea of how far Silverchair evolved from these early grunge days, I would recommend listening to one of their last releases, “Straight Lines”.

They did look a lot like Nirvana and sounded like Pearl Jam when they first started that's probably what help propulse them, but that also sort of became a curse with time as they had a really hard time getting away from that sound and image as they evolved. On their first two albums, it was full of teenage angst and you could tell that they were playing music similar to the one they listened to as an outlet for that angst. Passed that however, they evolved with each album sounding very different and pushing creativity. Unfortunately, the band broke up in 2011 after almost a 20-year run. Daniel Johns still does solo work and collaborations but in completely different genres: R&B, Musical, electronica etc. Everyone judged them for being Nirvana copycat but I think most people missed the fact that they were only 14-15 and that they had a little musical genius in the making right in front of their eyes.

They are on indefinite hiatus for some years. They are all doing other music projects. Daniel has an EDM outfit with the lead singer of Empire of the Sun, and has been composing/Music Directing for TV, Film etc
