I feel vindicated for obsessing over this album in middle school. I'm impressed how he's hitting those high notes even belting them in performance and even changing the vocal melody in perfect tune. They were so talented.

They had two accompanying pianists after 2002 because there sound evolved on records with strings and brass elements.
It’s a crying shame they no longer are together as they are/were my favourite band. They always pushed the envelope, were progressive and challenged us as listeners. Miss them dearly

Glad someone sent you one of their heavier songs. Still not as heavy as they started out but more than the last few. They really evolved quite dramatically from their first album where they were 15 years old and aping Nirvana and Sabbath in sound and style to their 5th album which was extreme baroque pop and rock. Few modern bands change so radically in a short time while remaining great all the way through

The pianist is Julian Hamilton, member of The Presets. He often played piano parts for Silverchair live shows back then, even wrote some songs together with Daniel Johns for the 5th Silverchair album. Silverchair was an amazing band, every album was done great, sounded different and has timeless songs. Check out the video "We're much preferred customers" by The Dissociatives live DVD, a project with Daniel Johns and Paul Mac. Daniel Johns´ work is full of passion for music and great melodies.

There’s a version of this (I believe it’s Live at São Paulo) where the singer sings the oooooohs in the breakdown and ascends the scale until the peak notes are up in whistle register. It’s wild.

Thank you so much ! I appreciate you guys doing this one !! It's been my anthem since it's release in 1999.
I absolutely agree with the Radiohead comments. Both take a stylistic musical journey to the listener that can feel it as much as they hear it.

This is dangerously good stuff. Someone could get hurt listening to this. Favorite bit: that bloody scream in the middle of the song. Images of war. Fire. Death and destruction. A seriously intense song. Great choice.

It's a great sound but that kind of scream really destroys your vocal chords. You have to move it out of your throat and into your mouth.

Emotion Sickness was the opening song at ALMOST every live gig after it was released - and if you watch every live gig available it will never be quite the same. Agree watching the Rocking in Rio version is insane and the crowd there are NOT at a Soundgarden gig LOL. Daniel has just released a new album.....FutureNever, and he's stayed true to himself as always.

I've experienced so much depression in my life that I almost find the song hard to listen to, almost like it's dangerous to do so. That said, there's not a lot of songs that come close to capturing what it's actually like, like this song does. The song definitely achieves what it sets out to do. Thanks for your reaction!

The reasons why they didn't make it in America is because they started out too young and were Australian. They won a radio contest around 14 years old, and their debut album was released the year Cobain died. They were called "Nirvana in Pijamas". Listen to the album "Diorama", you'll love it!

If you’re up for a bit of research. Silverchair were pretty big in the US in the mid 90s with their first album. Daniel Johns mentions that the labels they had for USA and the world didn’t pick up the rest of their music to sell internationally because they were basically too hard to market. Still a band of legendary status here in Australia. It’s a shame they weren’t marketed properly in the US.

@m jj When he finally beat anorexia, he developed a degenerative arthritis in his legs. This had to be toward the end of the documentary that came with the Diorama album. By the time 2002 rolled around, he had to be hooked on loads of painkillers and had to bathe with the shower heads set to its lowest stream. You can hear just by the expressions on his face & vocals he's clearly in pain.

Added comment on why they’re not big in America, relatively speaking - they’re on par with the Beatles, Zeppelin, etc. In Australia. Daniel Johns in Australia is regarded by fans as something like a cross between Kurt Cobain, Paul McCartney, and Prince. But he’s kind of infamous for staying true to his vision of things to both his credit and detriment. So when Frogstomp came out and was such a huge album, American record execs wanted more of the same. Fans did too. And Dan wasn’t having it. He’s a musical prodigy and had outgrown that album and resented it even as it was making him famous. So he remained true to himself and constantly worked to record music the way he heard it in his head, but because it wasn’t Frogstomp II the American marketing machine wouldn’t get behind it. Freak Show and Neon Ballroom (which is the album Emotion Sickness is from) we’re moderately successful b/c they were still basically hard rock, but Silverchair’s magnum opus, Diorama, got next to no airplay in the US and due to Dan’s health issues they couldn’t really tour it. Their last album, Young Modern, had one huge song, Straight Lines, but the album as a whole was again a constant struggle between band members and record execs and it ended up with no one really being happy with it I think. Daniel Johns now releases solo music completely on his own terms. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I really enjoy it.

Tbh, this was an average concert to pick. I've seen a lot live stuff from them which is waaay waaay better. The song is 6.5mins long anyway, to me this was extremely long winded, like 4mins too long. I LOVE silverchair and this was too much for me to take. Try Hollywood or One Way Mule or Freak from Rock in Rio 2002. 300,000 crowd and he looked awesome but sounded better.
