The Australian movie "Shine" won Geoffrey Rush his first Oscar for best actor in 1997. The movie told the story of autistic musician David Helfgott who spent many years in a mental institution. His piano compositions are out of this world. The keyboards you hear in this song were arranged and performed by David. You should check out, if you want, when the band played this song in front of hundreds of thousands of people at Rock in Rio back in the day. Just amazing.
Rock In Rio 2002. AMAZING. 300, 000 people in the crowd. He was in pain during it( Arthritis), but couldn't pass it up. They were in USA anyway and a one off concert.
The piano is David Helfgott, an autistic guy from Perth. The movie "Shine" with Geoffry Rush is about his life
I don't know of many other bands whose sound changed so dramatically from their first to last album - there are elements that remain but someone who loves their last album may hate their first and vice versa. Daniel Johns (lead singer/ guitar) has done side projects and solo stuff that just further broadens your listening pleasure or distances those who want more of the same. In my opinion, there is brilliance in it all.

I'm an American who's been a HUGE fan for 25 years now. Got to see them live in 2009....just before it was over.
ALL their albums are excellent....but Diorama, is a 10/10 masterpiece. And their 4th album.
Don't write them off as some derivative grunge band. Daniel Johns is a literal musical genius.
Unfortunately US record labels wanted to change the band for "commercial" success. Daniel, being the true artist he is refused and wanted to do it his way. They still had great success in Australia and with purists like yourself in US.
Silverchair's first album dropped when they were just 15, them being the most famous people in Australia combined with the critical blowback accusing these kids of being "Nirvana ripoffs" was very hard on them. _Neon Ballroom_ their 3rd album, was such an insane step up artistically. Sad;y, the pressure gave lead singer Daniel Johns an eating disorder (outlined in the song from the same album _Ana's Song (open fire)_
The song is about Daniel's struggle with viral arthritis. He was struck down for 12 months and couldn't work

Nope, about deep depression and Anorexia( 98-2000), the Arthritis came 2 years later(2001-2) after that, it develops from an already weakened immune system.

My suggestion, to look at a total different side to Silverchair. The grunge heavier side of them. Try the heaviest song they've made- Spawn Again. Then go to Israel's Son, Pure Massacre, Freak, Anthem for the year 2000, One Way Mule.

Its about deep depression. Screaming at himself/ willing himself to "get up". He'd sleep 20hours a day and had anxiety aswell. He wouldn't see or talk to anyone. At this time he also developed anorexia and got down to about 45kgs for a 6ft tall guy. Then 2 years later as his body had an already weakened immune system, he developed Reactive Arthritis while they were recording their 4th album in USA. They ended up postponing the final production of it and touring because he couldn't stand and barely walk. It affected his back, hands, knees and hips. He wanted the write a big epic song like Bohemian Rhapsody. This was his song. Pretty much from the 2nd album on Daniel had the majority of control of the music and what he wanted it to sound like. In the end, Daniel didn't want to do grunge heavier rocky songs, preferring to sound like soft pop to RnB so it was best they parted ways. Also the drummer and Daniel had a major falling out in recording their 6th album, and haven't talked since.
