I'm one of those people that never liked ball sports or hockey. Biking and skate/snow boarding is all I liked for the past 29 years when I started biking at 5 yo. I'm impressed by some of the trick shots people do in "regular sports", not enough to watch or bet on them tho.

The question isn't what riders "deserve"... that doesn't determine pay.
The question is, is there enough in the margins left to pay them a liveable wage (is the sport mature enough to support true pros across the board) and can they leverage their position in the industry collectively as riders to create pressure that standardizes that expectation when negotiating contracts.

Back when I raced MX, the front brake banjo bolt came away right when I late braked into the end of a 5th gear straightaway- needless to say, I didn’t make the corner……

XC has an older (wealthier) demographic following them. The bikes they are racing, the fans will buy.... You can't say the same with the downhill bros LOL.

I disagree that $50,000 is a decent living wage for these athletes. That has to cover the risks they take and their living expenses which you are not detailing. On top of that they give up the opportunity to build up income when they are in their prime. Too much time training. Other than prestige, what will Valle Holle get for a championship? She’s at the top, so there may be $$. Paid for in full by time off for injuries. Most of these athletes will be out of the sport within 10 years of when they turn pro. Mtn biking is great, but doesn’t build much of a resume outside of the sport. What then?
Most pro mtn bikers are grossly underpaid.

50k? Oof. What's that, an apartment and no medical insurance? 2024.
It costs 85k to eat hot dogs right now. Sure, young single, good health, no head gaskets, wisdom teeth, or special needs you can ramen your way on almost nothing.... but don't wreck or have a family.

I love are sport more than any other.. I'm very proud of the slope style athletes putting their foot down this year.. without them there is no show and it's about time the promoters understand riders come first, Not buying another yacht!

That income chart is fairly typical for the general population. But wonder if that takes into account travel and medical?

Do viewership numbers go into the pay levels for riders?. plenty of "ball" games pay via viewer number and it ends up the women end up with a higher % of the money than the men's teams.

All comes down to commercial interest in the sport. Myself had zero interest until I bought myself a mtb again and I "hate" road cycling, but even so I end up watching some of tour de france.
Slope style and type downhill like hardline I can see excel in the future. I dont see gravel, xc and endoro gonna get "big". This is my personal view of course, based on skies and snowboard.
LIke sking, slalom and giant slalom aint as interresting as Super-G and downhill and in snowboard none of them really grew.
Old school ski jumping and bullet track skiing (not sure if it is even called that) are pretty much dead. They have been replaced by slope style, half-pipe, big jump.

Nothing less than 100k after taxes if you're in the top 25 riders in the sport.

50k - 100k might seem acceptable, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to how much their sponsors make off the faces of their companies.

They're paid what the sponsors believe their worth. Plain and simple. This is economics 101 folks and to think otherwise, is absurd. If they want more money, then pay them commissions on bikes that they personally have sold or is tied directly to their race effort.
