I worked for the local Oliver dealer in the early 60's. We went to a plowing contest where all participants pulled the same Oliver plow. That put them on the same page. Some of the considerations USAC recorded had no meaning in everyday farm operations, but note worthy anyway. In the contest I attended Oliver out performed all of it's competitors. The most interesting thing about this video was the opening dialog when "Bob" said he wanted us to know what White was up to. To bad Oliver didn't understand that before crawling into bed with the devil. That merger took place because White needed $ and Oliver had them. When White gleaned all they could Oliver ceased to exist.

"Everything was checked, and rechecked..." to make sure the Oliver would win, since White was putting on the show, right?!
Kind of strange they chose a 1468 instead of the far more popular 1466. But they both made basically the same power (the 2600 rpm version of the 6-cyl, that is, which began production in late 1972), so I guess it doesn't matter. That DT436 in a 1466 would've started much quicker than the DV550 in the 1468 though.

For the White to beat the Massey, at cold starting, was something. I have a 60s model Massey 65, with the Perkins diesel. It is still the best starting engine, on my property, during any weather, with no starting aid. With a good, strong, battery, almost instant starting, if you leave the throttle lever at idle. Did White use Perkins engines. I will have to check into it. Some of these tests were influenced by the difference in the operators. Gear selection, plowing depth differences, down to fractions of an inch, throttle sets, and certain other skills, such as turning around and lining up the plows for the next pass, if applicable, all can make differences in area covered, per time.

Sorry white, but i will choose the jd 4630. Lots of them still in use, love the sound guard cab, and deere and company is still going strong!

You couldn't start 30 and 40 series JD's without ether on a summer day, let alone at the temp shown here. I dont really get the big deal about the plow. Where I live, it's all non irrigated dryland farming, and if you showed up in a field with a mold board plow, somebody would run you off with a shotgun, most likely. A moldboard plow is the most effective moisture removal tillage tool ever invented.

Where I live the mold board plow is still fairly popular. Flat black ground just a few mile west of me.

I have both 30 and 40 series. It's only the 30's that are cold blooded.

@@lfeco I don't like how the slightly newer Deere starts with a roar. Can't be good for an engine.

A Mold board plow was designed to Turn over Prairie grass and wheat stubble, it also helps hold in rain as long as you subsoil every 3 years it's excellent on clover food plots, because it holds in moisture during hot dry summers.

I have an actual report where Oliver was caught cheating at the University of Nebraska tractor test facility. They had said they were bringing two tractors of the same model (one row crop, one standard) but only one showed up the day testing started. Raising suspicion, the test engineer had 3 students observe him make 3 hidden chisel marks in the engine block of the row-crop. When the standard model showed up weeks later it had the same engine already tested in it. Oliver is definitely up to something translates into "buyer beware!" Point of the story- I wouldn't believe a word these guys said.

ANDY MOTL that's a pretty tall tail for a 44 year old story.

Oliver was scheduled to bring two tractors in for testing. Same model just one was a row-crop and the other a standard. When only the row-crop showed up the Les Larsen became suspicious he took a punch and made 3 small marks on the engine while 3 students observed him doing so. That motor came to Nebraska again this time in the standard model. Obviously an engine already broken in should pull a few more hp than a brand new one. The Oliver engineers expressed disappointment in not seeing the gains they were hoping for. Les made the comment that, "Well you didn't expect them to be much different than when we tested the engine before, did you!?"

This is a well documented event by 2 of the 3 students that witnessed it happen at the Les Larsen Tractor Testing Museum.

I love how the USAC test results "prove" the american tractors are better than the british tractor..... meanwhile in 2021 I gaurantee you more of those british tractors are still alive and working decades after all that yank trash has rusted away
