My dad bought a 2-70 brand new in 1976. I was 10 years old at the time. I still use it to this day and I'm 58 now. It only has 1625 hours on it and runs as good now as it did almost 50 years ago. Great tractor.

For the White to beat the Massey, at cold starting, was something. I have a 60s model Massey 65, with the Perkins diesel. It is still the best starting engine, on my property, during any weather, with no starting aid. With a good, strong, battery, almost instant starting, if you leave the throttle lever at idle. Did White use Perkins engines. I will have to check into it. Some of these tests were influenced by the difference in the operators. Gear selection, plowing depth differences, down to fractions of an inch, throttle sets, and certain other skills, such as turning around and lining up the plows for the next pass, if applicable, all can make differences in area covered, per time.

If a 146 hp 2255 would pull all those implements I imagine a 175 hp JD 6030 would have just played with them. Those tractors regularly came out of the factory at 200+ hp. A 1566 would’ve been a good puller at the time as well at 160 pto hp.

WE pulled a White 588 7 bottom spring reset plow with a 7520 back in the day. It was a handful for it in our heavy soils but handled it fine otherwise. I doubt those tractors shown could pull 7 bottoms here anyway. We also still have a G1000 VIsta. although not sure why. Today we run Caterpillar flat tracks.

They got a bad name when they put these little V8 200ish hp engines in class 8 80,000lb semis and dumps. Sure they are going be dogs and get beat to hell. Like putting a 4cyl of the same era in a 1 ton pick up and expecting the operators to be happy and the engine to last and perform towing......

I will say this if I was a farmer I would of chosen a Minneapolis Moline G1355 diesel with 145 horsepower why because of there performance and the final drive and how you can put the horsepower to ground and it's not setting on the axles like the other tractor's are it's about like a planetary axle and no wander that Minneapolis tractor's and Oliver are number one in the country because of the performance and horsepower they build tractors the right way where the horsepower goes to the ground number one 👍

James Oliver started in the plow business in 1855, 18 years after John Deere. This isn't a who invented it or who is better, it is a point in history. Deere made the first self scouring plow. Oliver made chilled steel plows, which in certain soil was superior to conventional production methods. Oliver plows are quite good and are among the better ones built. Looking back, you could always tell when neighbors helped one another with different brand of plow anyways looking at the field they plowed. Some did a better job of setting theirs than others too.

"Everything was checked, and rechecked..." to make sure the Oliver would win, since White was putting on the show, right?! Kind of strange they chose a 1468 instead of the far more popular 1466. But they both made basically the same power (the 2600 rpm version of the 6-cyl, that is, which began production in late 1972), so I guess it doesn't matter. That DT436 in a 1466 would've started much quicker than the DV550 in the 1468 though.

@@devandulin6073 I've seen variations of this. They went with V8 engines and 6-18 plows with auto resets. John Deere had neither a V8 tractor or auto reset but were included presumably because they were a large contender in market place.
