When I went to NYC, I got confused and lost trying to navigate the subway to my destination. When I asked for help, said I was lost, I was given help and directions by the subway staff and also when I left the subway station, one of the other passengers helped point me in the way. Now, I grew up and learn not only about open access to guns, lacking health insurance and flawed infrastructure with massive amounts of lead in pipes, but also that in New York, the symbol of how advanced the US is, subways smoke and there is garbage on the streets. It's such a different thing from what we were shown as kids.

but, just to let non-New Yorkers or non-big-city people, in general - we are not constantly on alert in the subways. millions ride for years and nothing happens, except maybe getting hit with a backpack. we know what to look for, who to stay away from and where not to go. never be by yourself, for instance. i usually carry my keys in my fist. but that’s living here - it’s like breathing, ya know? also, the homeless are usually sleeping on the seats with as much empty space around them as possible - especially with Covid!! you gotta have radar in NY, but it becomes second nature and doesn’t really bother you. 🌷🌿🌼🌱🌷
