Comedian Bassem Youssef on the Israel-Gaza war, the Arab Spring, and why we can’t change the world

  • Bassem Youssef thinks that he’s come on the wrong podcast. “People in power don't really care about any of our suggestions to change the world”, he tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy, “because if our ways to change the world affect their interests, they will stop you.”
And he knows what he’s talking about, having fled his home country of Egypt after his TV comedy became no longer acceptable to the authorities there.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Bassem started his career as a heart surgeon, then moved to political comedy in response to the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, taking on the ruling elite in his country. His political satire show, ‘Al-Bernameg’ was the most watched show in Egyptian TV history, but soon became a thorn in the side of the authorities there, forcing him into exile.
In this episode of Ways to Change the World, Bassem Youssef talks about his view that Israel should be held accountable for the war in Gaza, how the Egyptian revolution was a turning point in his life, and why he feels disillusioned with the West's "lecturing" on human rights and international law.
Produced by Shaheen Sattar, Silvia Maresca, and Hila May

As an orthodox jew, I condemn the terrorist acts and war crimes of Israel. I support the creation of a free and independent Palestinian state. This will end all the violence. As Jews we need to accept that Israel is the occupying force and we need to do the right thing and give Palestinians their own independent state free from Israeli interferences. CRITCIZING ISRAEL ISN'T ANTISEMITISM!!! JUDAISM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ZIONISM !!!!

The terrorists acts of Israel? Israel doesn’t commit terrorist acts. Israel wants peace. Where do you get your information from?? The Israeli govt. removed all Jews out of Gaza in 2005. Gaza had no Jews in it since 2005! Hamas, instead of using the $ they received to help their people and build infrastructure instead built terror tunnels and use civilians as humans shields.

Would that not be worse than what you proposed? What if they are congratulated after Hamas is routed, Palestinians reject to continue these types actions, they elect a peaceful group that uses all the aid given to it to build infrastructure for Gazans and the next 20 years are peaceful as opposed to the last 20 years? The western state and media's coverage of the 7 aid workers was a way for complicit countries to show false outrage. For them it was a mild form of PR, and for a moment they could appear outraged and allow the public to be outraged by 'white deaths'. But no one insists that there is a proper independent investigation and Israel gets to investigate its own crimes and then we all move on. Yossef is right, 'We should wonder who leads who, America leads Israel or visa versa. I believe they are in lockstep.

@@NeilEvans-xq8ikbecause Israel wanted all the Jews to leave and immigrate to Israel to beef up its population (especially when it initially declared itself), it did everything to entice and coerce Jews into leaving Lebanon and other Arab countries. The Lavon Affair operation in Egypt was prime example of how they sent Jews to harass other Jews and pin it on the locals to get them to feel unsafe and go to Israel. It only takes a few incidents to instill fear and it spreads real fast. But of course Israel to this date lies about the Jews getting kicked out of Arab lands.
