In Nairobi intersections have lights, county traffic marshal and a traffic cop all giving different signals at the same time, you pic whichever works for you.
And pedestrians will step out when they are many, and are tired of waiting, so the cars will have to stop regardless of the colour of the traffic lights

Remember when traffic lights first appeared they in a way resembled the persona of robots. So in South Africa (Africa) it was basically just a reference based on on resemblance.
Yebo, another South African here. When my inlaws first came to South Africa, from the UK, for my wedding in 1983, they continuously peppered me with questions about the word "robots". My mom and dad visited my cousin who lives in berlin (we're not from Europe but my cousins are born and live there) and the first thing mom told us was about the traffic lights, she said the street was completely empty 😂 and she told my cousin "let's cross it's empty" and my cousin refused because she was waiting for the light alongside another old german lady, and i thought my mom was just dramatizing the scene but I guess it's true 😂😂😂
