Looks like a nice little radio 📻. I bought the PL-330 based on several video reviews including yours and have been very satisfied and impressed by it. I also bought the PL-368 and H501x all bought from ANON-CO. TECSUN makes great radios. I also bought a MLA-30+ loop antenna 📡 and I'm getting even stronger clearer signals now. ANON-CO is a great distributor since they are in New Jersey and I'm in New York City I get even faster delivery than the predicted delivery date.

The Only Tecsun I have owned is My Pl-660 and I love it. It is years old now and still working good. The Other night I could not sleep and got up and found a Cuban Station broadcasting on 9065 KHZ It was pretty weird. Still not sure what that was. Thanks for Sharing Tom

Cool. Some people down it for not having SSB, but, they are forgetting that radios with SSB are very expensive in many countries. Some really have no need for SSB. To us , this is a hobby. To those in 3d World countries, it’s the only way they can get anything other than Local news. These radios are not made Solely for the Western world.
Nor, is everyone into SSB Listening.
This would be a good alternative to a higher priced radio.

Just got mine yesterday. So far it’s a great little radio. It will keep me busy for a while before I ever miss the lack of SSB. Sound quality is excellent and sensitivity is terrific. Very very pleased with it for very little money.

They've definately taken over from Sangean, Eton, and CCrane as the leader of making shortwave radios in all price ranges. The only thing I see is they seem to be in competition with themselves on many of their models. Edit: This radio is only $7 cheaper than the 330, which offers SSB.

Finally, Tecsun has released the English language (HK export) version of the PL-320! I've had this model since December 2022, albeit the Chinese domestic market version. Mine comes with a much earlier firmware number, the 3202.
The PL-320 doesn't have SSB as it uses the SiLabs Si4734 DSP chip and not the more expensive Si4735, which includes SSB. However it has an undocumented, user configurable ETM+ threshold setting by holding down the dedicated B/W key while in AM mode. The RSSI display will flash for a few seconds and both the volume control and tuning knob are used to change these figures independently. I initially messed up my PL-320 by not writing down its original values and even today I have no idea what its default settings are. I haven't found the English manual in PDF format at this time. 📻😟
IMO, the PL-320 is much better than the PL-310ET which I briefly owned. Its AGC is properly configured and handles strong MW/SW signals without overloading like the 310ET (that goes for the PL-398MP too and probably also the PL-380). Unlike the PL-330, the PL-320 includes the 9kHz bandwidth for its SW band, giving a total of four options: 2.5 kHz, 3.5 kHz, 5.0 kHz, and 9.0 kHz.
The problem with the PL-320 is it's NOT very competitively priced against its much older but SSB capable sibling, the PL-330. If it were as inexpensive as the XHDATA D-109 or the Sihuadon R-108, the PL-320 would have been more popular. I think the PL-320 is a very decent performing SW radio but those who are already eyeing the PL-330 will probably give this one a miss. 😐

very true and well put. I see Xhdata have jacked up their prices since last weekend. Tecsun said to be working on the bones of a new high-end radio so that should be interesting to see towards the end of this year or early 2024

@@UKRO404 They're both about the same sensitivity and I haven't been able to tell whether my PL-330 (3306) is any better or worse better than my PL-320. Of course by the time you get your PL-320 it will come with a more recent firmware, 3203 if not 3204.
Personally I don't think the firmware version has any influence over the radio's sensitivity, but the design, the quality and the final calibration of the receiver at the factory.
Then there's also the subject of the antenna to the receiver. A simple reel antenna which you can buy online for about US$7 makes a lot of difference when compared to the telescopic whip antenna and both the PL-330 and 320's whips are pretty short. I've already got five or six reel antennas, which are shared amongst my twelve portable Tecsun and XHDATA receivers and I've also a Megaloop MLA-30+ active antenna on order.
If you're collecting shortwave radios like some of us do (lol), the PL-320 makes a good addition to your collection. But if you're looking for a non SSB shortwave radio with a better price/performance ratio I'd vote for the XHDATA D-109. I kind of looked down at it when it first came out early this year, but when I bought it was a pleasant surprise to me!
For the casual SW listener on a budget, I think the D-109 is a much better value for the money. 📻😊

@@UKRO404 Ah, sorry Ian...I had missed the part where you stated your concern about the DSP chips.
There's a semiconductor manufacturing company named Silicon Labs that introduced the industry's first fully integrated, low powered 100% CMOS AM/FM/SW/LW radio receiver in one single chip. Silicon Labs has since sold off their Si473x business to another company called Skyworks.
A DSP "radio-on-a-chip" component replaces a lot of discrete electronics parts that are traditionally required in a radio receiver. This equates to substantial cost savings from the radio manufacturer's perspective and also allows the use of uncomplicated and smaller, space saving printed circuit boards. Lower manufacturing costs in turn, benefit the end consumers as DSP based multi-band radios have become a lot more affordable than a non-DSP equivalent from the 1990s.
Back to the Si4734/4735 DSP chips, receivers that don't offer Single Side Band use the less expensive Si 4734 chip. Those with the SSB feature come with the more capable Si 4735 variant, which also has a built-in FM RDS decoding and can also be "hacked" to provide SSB capability via a quick firmware patch that takes place each time the SSB button is pressed.
So, both the PL-320 and the XHDATA D-109 use the cheaper Si 4734 DSP chip, while the PL-330 (and the D-808) gets the costlier Si 4735.
How the radio design engineers implement the entire radio circuitry using the same DSP is a completely different matter. AFAIK, the XHDATA/Sihuadon/Radiwow branded radios don't have any issues with their Automatic Gain Control (AGC), but Tecsun's PL-310ET and PL-398 (possibly including the PL-380) models that also use the Si 4734 DSP chip, appear to have unstable AGC characteristics with strong SW broadcast stations. Their FM bands are however, unaffected.
Note that this AGC instability issue does not affect the radio's sensitivity, but it makes listening to strong SW stations somewhat unbearable to the ears. Anomalies include a slight distortion on peak strength signals followed by a sudden drop in volume (soft muting?) between 200ms and 500ms as the AGC attempts to cope with peak signals.
Casual users who seldom listen to SW bands are not likely to notice this anomaly, but SW enthusiasts will. It gets annoying after a while.
The good news is that neither the Tecsun PL-320 nor the XHDATA D-109 have this AGC pumping issue and they both handle strong peak signals quite well.
As for the D-109, it's fitted with either a beefy 5-watt speaker which really brings out the low frequencies, especially when playing music on FM.
In contrast, the PL-320's internal loudspeaker is rated at only 250mW (same as the PL-330). Its weaker audio amp section draws less power on the battery but gives a dismal midrange and trebly audio experience. Bassy lows? Nope. To experience some bass you'll have to resort to listening using high quality earbuds or headphones.
And there's the issue of battery life. The D-109's factory supplied 18650 cell is rated at 2,000 mAH which should last a few days' of continuous listening at low volume. You can always upgrade that battery to a 3,500 mAH one (be sure not to buy a counterfeit 3,500 mAH battery online) for extended operations.
The slim Nokia BL-5C battery that the PL-320 uses has a nominal capacity of 1,020 mAH. There are also claims of "upgraded" and "high capacity" BL-5Cs by online sellers, but those steer clear of those advertising more than 2000 mAH (it's unrealistically way beyond the maximum internal battery design capacity).
See? It's a good thing that the XHDATA D-109 chose the 18650 battery over the BL-5C format. The D-109 has a more powerful audio amplifier, Bluetooth and MP3 - these three have a higher power consumption, therefore the 18650 cell is the right selection.
Sorry for the long comment, but I hope this helps you understand why I think XHDATA's D-109 gives a better value for the money for the average listener, compared to the Tecsun PL-320. 📻☺

All low cost shortwave receivers that rely on a DSP chip have indented tuning knobs, including the PL-320. Hybrid PLL/DSP receivers like the Tecsun S-8800, PL-880, 990 and H-501 have smooth tuning knobs since their AM band section uses a PLL synthesized circuit.

      @twohandsandaradio Před rokem

@@StratmanII wrong. Not all. I bet you're thinking about mute on tuning. The chuffing with DSP. I'm talking about the physical turning of the knob. This has about an 1/8 of a turn per khz. I can say after 350+ radios and 95% DSP the 330 and 320 are one of a handful with an indented tuning knob. I think the ATS-909x might be indented as well. I digress. Thanks for playing along and have a great day.
