  • Drone video (mostly) showing the new double track at Iron Ridge on Mullan Pass, west of Helena MT. Apologies for the hazy smoky video due to forest fires. A bit long too, but I wanted to show both trains to the end. Fast forward as necessary !!

    Scott - never too long for me. Another great capture by you. It is fascinating to listen from about the 1.00m mark where the EMD's helpers' exhaust and cooling fan whine is more evident than the lead locomotives. That drone of yours is such a steady platform - it was very stabilised vision from it. And an EMD bringing up the rear. Another great presentation by you. Thanks.

    • @ScottHiddelston
      @ScottHiddelston  Před 7 lety +7

      Thanks Mike. I'm getting so confident of the drone's stability I'm starting to just position it, start it recording and then concentrate on my regular camera. It will even come home when it's battery gets low if I forget about it.

    Way back at the beginning of the Powder River Basin coal rush the BN thought hard about how to ship more coal in fewer trains. They came up with a 13-segment coal car 278'-4" long between the pulling faces. Built one train set of 23 cars. The Trough Train. It had its problems but as a modeler, I just love the way it snakes around curves. Sad they are all gone. Would have loved to see it at this viewpoint.

Could you drop the name of the drone model/maker and if the camera is stock to the drone. If not specify what camera please. I'd like to get the same sort of equipment. This is some of the best and "heard" I have seen. Kudos of the first degree. PS: I'm a pro artist. I know quality.

    • @ScottHiddelston
      @ScottHiddelston  Před 4 lety

      Thanks J. The drone is a DJI Inspire 1 with the standard x3 camera that comes with it. It's ancient by today's standards but still smooth steady and reliable. Video is recorded at 1080P60. The camcorder is a Canon XF100, and the audio is recorded into that. I use a Sound Devices MixPre D to provide phantom power and for its absolutely stunning limiters; they let nothing distort. The mic is an Audio Technica BP4029 stereo field mic. I put the Canon video, drone video and the audio into FCPX on a Mac and I cut and paste audio to match the view as needed, since the drone at times is well away from the audio being recorded. Let me know if I've missed anything and thanks for the kind comments.

      Yep. You are doing good stuff. Orders of magnitude better than 99 percent of foamer wannabees. You understand image and sound and that's just too rare, not just here on You Tube. In Montana, it's statistically impossible, but I'll take these odds. You keep getting better, you're increasingly taking full advantage of what comes before you, something almost nobody else seems to be able to grasp.
      That aside, I will "brag" one time that I decided to pace five units of "green era" SD 45 road power up the west side of Mullan. No pictures, no tape, just a window rolled down on a perfect fall afternoon at 17 mph. The only thing better would have been sitting in the right front seat with a sandwich and coffee.
