  • Is your sailboat or powerboat designed to keep you safe? In this first video in our series on boating safety, we discuss the specific design attributes of boats you should look for to improve your safety (and therefore enjoyment) on the water. We walk through several upgrades you can do that don’t require a lot of work or expensive marine store visits. Be sure to also check out the other videos in our boating safety playlist, including topics such as lifejackets, man-overboard gear, bilge pumps, seacocks, and life rafts.
Also, be sure to check out our other boating how to videos on our channel. We cover a wide range of topics, such as varnishing, solar power, and navigation electronics. We also post regularly on our sailing adventures onboard our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 ‘Sea Rose’.
Lastly, check out our blog site - www.lifefourpointzero.com. We periodically post written stories and pictures of our sailing adventures on our blog.

That is excellent, thanks Tom! There's a bit to think about for my 50-year-old wooden ketch. I'll look forward to the rest of the series.

Why has it taken me 3 years to discover your excellent and informative channel? Also, like others, I'm also amazed you haven't got at least 10x more followers.

Thank you, Jean! I’m not sure if it is the lack of bikini wearing or maybe the appearance of some gray hairs! We appreciate you watching and commenting … we are slowly picking up viewers and subscribers!

I ordered so 440 like yours. I was wondering which system of main sail is better. I finally chosen sliding main sail not furling system(performance version). As you mentioned for the safety furling main sail seems to be better. I was told that so 440 performance model has reefing system in the cockpit (1,2,3 reefing) so we can reef the mainsail. Anyway We are waiting for our new so 440 and expecting sailing with her~ Until we get her we are satisfied from your journey with 440 on your channel Thank you

Congratulations on your purchase - we hope you enjoy your SO 440 as much as we do. Either sail system is very workable but our preference was the in-mast furling for ease of deployment. It is just the two of us on the boat and when we are doing watches, we each can manage the furling system where the strength and agility required for a sliding sail is something we felt might us pick motoring in light winds instead of attempting to sail. I am sure you will like the config you ordered.
      Thanks for watching our videos!

Guys I'm looking at buying a 440 and your Davit and derrick look awesome. Can you tell me where you bought them please?

Hi Steve. The outboard hoist is made by Garhauer. We love it. You can see discussion on it in this thread in the Jeanneau walkaround series Facebook group. facebook.com/groups/831266983948080/permalink/1426534017754704/?mibextid=W9rl1R. The davits are made by Atkins and Hoyle. I’ve had to modify them quite a bit to make them work on the SO440. You might consider other options, or post your question to the FB group. Good luck!

Hi guys. Big Fan of in Mast Furling here. During a chat with Precision Sails while searching for a Sailmaker that makes Battenless Triradial cut Sails, to help eliminate chafing wear and tear, plus provide strong Reefing Points, Precision Sails were the first ones I Contacted that confirmed that they make them(since, others confirm that they also make them now), ending the conversation with the very interesting info, that Triradial Construction can recover most of the Sailpower lost by not having Battens. Given how much longer such a Sail can last, compared to a classic Crosscut Dacron Sail, at from about double the price, in cost per year terms, Triradial appears to be one heck of a bargain. In fact I think I’ll be going for a Triradial Self Tacking Furling Jib as well (I suspect two Reefing points would be sufficient tbh , but will chat with the Sailmaker when ordering ) Among those now doing such Sails are Quantum, Ullman, and Elvstrom , in the order they confirmed to me that they will make them. Others are likely also joining in given the potential benefits they offer, high for in mast Furling the important UV Protection that is provided by furling into an Aluminium Mast. Admission- I really like Ullman’s Offshore Spec in Mast Furling Main, Construction with Challenge 9.11 Sailcloth, probably have to up spec the Main Sheet and Halyard Winches, but for a Sail That Tough, probably worth the investment? Best Wishes. Bob. 👍⛵️🌟🌟🌟

Some great research there Bob. We are big fans of in mast furling. You lose some sail area but gain a lot in flexibility. The battenless triradial is an interesting concept. Enjoy!
