S&W FPC Complete Disassembly - Bolt Catch Design Flaw?

  • FPC bolt catch issue: On last round, the bolt would lock but as soon as the magazine was removed, the bolt would drop forward. Is this a design flaw? Upon disassembly and inspection, I found the bolt catch bar was bent. It is my opinion that the bolt catch bar is too weak to handle the constant impact of the bolt against the bolt catch.

    The bolt catch could use some improvement. For instance making it easier to activate when shooting to last round hold open. Reaching back to the charging handle takes more time but is the only consistent (in my experience) way of getting a new round chambered.

      I found the bolt catch arm inside on left side was bent. Yes definitely S&W should update the latch to extend out further.

    in this state i modded my bolt catch and then polished the feed ramps with flitz polish to a mirror polish with my demel. i was shock how easy this gun is to field strip to bare bones. im not sure what to polish for the parts of the trigger. not sure what the sear is and not sure what to polish on the hammer. but tell you the truth i kinda like the stock trigger where it out. if i was running i kinda want it at 5-6lbs anyways.

      So far the bolt catch is the only part that I am having issues with (bent)...great trigger being stock/factory.

    Does the FPC share the same trigger pack as the m&p 2.0 pistols? I'm curious about trigger upgrades. It pretty much looks like a m&p pistol in there...

    • @redarmory
      @redarmory  Před 7 měsíci

      From what I see, they are not the same design. Although the trigger shoe is similar, internally the parts are different. The biggest difference is one is hammer fired and the other is striker fire. So, the standard trigger upgrades (spring kit) will not work. I'll try to do a follow-up video next time I disassemble the FPC for cleaning.

    Thanks for the instructional video. My carbine was flawed right out of the box. First none of the 3 magazines can be loaded because of overwhelming spring tension and, a rocking feed ramp. Secondly, when I activate the the bolt catch to hold the bolt open prior to inserting the magazine, the charging handle cannot be released and sent home making the firearm unusable. The only way to send the bolt home is to remove the magazine!
    The bolt catch works as it should without a magazine inserted. Being a Canadian, I was told by the S&W service dealer that it could take 6-9 months turn-around on parts and repairs. The S&W FPC has only been in my possession for one week and the selling dealer, not the same as the repair dealer, has not been helpful. Do you have any suggestions on this particular issue, I would really appreciate some help? Thank you

      Just so I understand you correctly. First, have you disassemble the mags by taking the baseplate, lock plate, spring and follower out of the mag body? If no obstruction, you should be able to manually push down on the follower when the mag is empty. As for the feed ramp it is held together by spring and pin and should sit flush with bottom half of receiver. Secondly, you mentioned you are not able to charge the rifle with bolt catch holding the bolt open using the CH, is that with or without an empty magazine inserted? If a empty magazine is inserted and the bolt is locked back, you will not be able to use the charging handle since the follower in the mag is pushing up on the bolt latch lever. The only way to have the bolt move forward and close is to push down on the bolt hold latch. It is difficult to do since the nub/protrusion is almost flushed against the receiver.

      Perfect, that's the size I had ordered. Is your muzzle device on with a crush washer? I'm not 100% sure how to clamp the barrel for installation.

    • @redarmory
      @redarmory  Před 10 měsíci

      @@johnw2604 yes, I installed the comp with a crush washer. There was enough room for me to clamp the barrel forward of the handguard with some soft jaws to install the muzzle device. You can also use a good piece of leather wrap around the barrel in a vice since it didn't take much to turn the comp and get it indexed. or just remove the nuts/bolts on handguard to expose the entire barrel...there were a bunch of them fasteners 😁

    Knowing the design flaws of the S&W F.P.C., do you still think it's worth buying? Unfortunately, after seeing your video, I have my doubts. I believe you should be a paid consultant for S&W. I do hope S&W sees this video and corrects the problems !!

    • @redarmory
      @redarmory  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes I still think it's a good buy. Hopefully either S&W or aftermarket companies will come out with a updated lever. I am all for S&W sending any of their new product to test😉. Thanks.

    Hello, my FPC won’t fold and it seems like the bolt is stuck.

    • @redarmory
      @redarmory  Před 7 měsíci

      When you say, won't fold do you mean the latch on the right side by ejection port will not unlatch? First verify chamber is empty, follow field strip procedures and make sure on disassembly to note any damage parts. If you are able to, remove the two pins holding the barrel assembly to the fire control assembly. Hard to figure what could be causing the issues without additional details.

    • @redarmory
      @redarmory  Před 4 měsíci

      I haven't looked, but are you referring to the back of bolt near the firing pin? or bottom of the bolt?

    • @mnrodriguez
      @mnrodriguez Před 4 měsíci

      The back of the bolt, around the firing pin. Where the hammer hits.

    • @redarmory
      @redarmory  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @mnrodriguez I would expect impact marks, and since the bolt moves back on the hammer on recoil, the marks you see to be normal. I'll keep a lookout and report back if anything changes on mine.

    Seems to me that a beaffier aftermarket bolt catch would bring a business some cash in. That and add in a gas pedal to the bolt catch design. Would only have to tear down just past the feed ramp for replacement. Does anyone know if someone is working on something like this? If not, im going to do something similar to the above post and drill and tap that dude. I may buy a gas pedal for a different gun and bolt it on with a red lock tite. Hell, I thought about tig welding one on. Lol

    WHY???

    • @redarmory
      @redarmory  Před 9 měsíci +4

      "Why" it's a design flaw in my opinion? After 2000rds notice that the bolt would not stay locked back on last round when magazine was removed. With mag in, it would lock back but bolt would fall forward once mag was removed. Disassembled rifle completely and found the bolt catch (U-shape) on one of the leg was bent and was not getting good engagement of the bolt to hold it open. Straighten out the part and now just waiting to see if it happens again. Seems to me the leg is too weak to hold up in the long term.
