  • While there are many Sonic games I've had a soft spot for over the years, I've never loved any of them as much as I love Sonic CD. In this video, I talk about why that is.

Just so yall know, the part 2 to my Sonic CD video is going to be coming at some point soon, but in the meantime I plan on working on some shorter videos to make up the time it takes to get that out! Hope that clears things up if there's any confusion about a future upload on here that isn't related to Sonic CD even though I announced part 2.

Also, little easter egg: In Wacky Workbench, you have a special room only accessible in specific time periods. When you see it in the past, you see a statue, presumably the one of an angel if we judge by the wings. The room seems to be made with bricks, clashing entirely with the metallic floor that made the place with. This room is a room that seems to be untouched by the time. This statue gives you rings.
    Cool.
In other time periods, the room seems to be walled in since you cannot have access to it. In the Bad Future however, you can access it again, and apparently... Dr. Robotnik had his hands on it.
The statue had been replaced with a statue of the doctor, not giving you any rings. The room itself is made with metal instead, and when you break the Robotnik statue out of spite... you get a trap that attacks you.
This further reinforces the need for you to actually save the world and get the good ending, just in the hope that this statue doesn't get defiled again.

Something I, too, love about CD is Metal Sonic. Particularly, that even though everyone else has gone through several design changes- Metal hasn't. Sure his limbs might have gotten longer or his animations might be smoother, but his core design hasn't changed since CD. He's still this metallic antithesis of classic Sonic that stands in stark contrast to what Sonic is. The only change Metal's had was Neo Metal, and that felt more like a new form rather than a design change so I say Neo doesn't count.

  • @Garbo_trashcan
    @Garbo_trashcan Před rokem +312

One little thing that I wanted to add to the Metal Sonic fight is Robotnik's role in it and what it represents.
    it has two sides:
Robotnik's confidence in Metal and his lack of care over his creations.
Robotnik chases you and Metal with an unavoidable insta-kill laser. The fact that he decides to do it means that he either is so confident in Metal winning the race that he'll be able to finally end Sonic with no chance of escaping.
    Or...
Robotnik does not care if Metal loses. In his mind, it's just another machine that he created to stop Sonic, most likely expecting it to fail him, just like every other one in the past. He is not afraid to destroy Metal in the laser if he loses to Sonic, which shows how little this supposedly perfect rival mattered to him.

Slightly off topic, but I love how at the end of the video we jump to what feels like two sides of one coin. On one hand, Pastro the creator wants to make content based on things he enjoys that others may find interest in, even if it's not the norm. On the other, you have a side that wants to try and cater to the majority crowd that wants one particular thing outta you which is the most popular subject. By far my favorite part about Metal Sonic is despite being the antithesis to the point where he seems like a lifeless slave, the games go out of their way to show that Metal is more than just a puppet of Eggman's. Even in CD, the first thing he does is give Sonic's iconic finger wave with his arms crossed, that combined with how he reacts to how Sonic is doing by using whichever ability with hurt or surpass our favorite Hedgehog in a more intelligent way unlike any other Eggman robot just shows how there is more than just another Badnik to beat. But keeping with the antithesis part of him, we realize that he just wants to beat Sonic, in any way possible. Unlike Sonic who usually is willing to give anyone a chance once they prove themselves worthy, Metal won't even give Sonic a breather if he could, and just wants to prove that he is the only Sonic there could be, caring not for anything else but beating the blue blur. This makes him one of the most capable, adaptive, and overall ruthless Eggman robots, despite the fact that he only listens to Eggman because he is his best bet to surpass the faker in his eyes. Add on the fact that he actively copies Sonic's shields in the form of shock and flame charge, with the themes of Sonic's freedom of choice and identity shown in most tracks versus a ruthless copy cat created only for one purpose, and we have one of the most well made Sonic robots in the series.

Actually, I didn't subscribe for horror, not necessarily at least. I subscribed because Pastra can make a video discussing any game, no matter how niche, and it will still be incredibly entertaining. All because you can feel his passion for these games when he talks about them. Hell, Pastra could make a video about why Flappy Bird is the pinnacle of gaming and I'd eat that shit up no questions asked.
My first encounter with this channel was the Bendy and The Ink Machine video. I've been in the fandom when it was fresh, and while I liked the game, I never thought it could be someone's literal favorite of the genre. The game has, at this point, been criticized so much for its flaws and shortcomings, bugs, and creator drama, that I thought every connoisseur of the genre wouldn't even find it scary, and would rate it as a mediocre to an okay game at best. But the way Pastra was so unapologetically passionate about it, how he highlighted every detail he loved about the game, how enthusiastic he was to just talk about why the game brought him joy - it was such a delight to watch, and it made me realize that maybe some positivity is really needed in the sea of merciless criticism. That maybe it's okay to enjoy and love imperfect games.
So, yeah. Suck it Lankmann, I didn't subscribe for horror. I subscribed for passion.

I love Sonic CD for its sense of exploration and discovery, not only in-game, but the secrets which can be found in the sound test menu, the secret special stage, the fact that the second level, a zone supposedly being a mirrored version of marble zone scrapped very early in development, the influences of many great songs in, and the tone of, the soundtrack, it all blends together to make one of the most interesting and intriguing experiences that Sonic has to offer. And, as it was designed to be the successor to the first sonic game, and linking to the theme of duality, all of the stages in Sonic CD are essentially mirrored versions of the stages in Sonic 1, Palmtree Panic resembling Green Hill, Metallic Madness being similar to Scrap Brain, among others. One of my favorite games in the series despite all of the flaws it has, mainly in terms of level design due to most of the team working on it focussing on the more artistic, conceptual and environmental aspects. oh and metal sonic is truly awesome and i love him so much

  • @homecheese8625
    @homecheese8625 Před rokem +66

This video perfectly explains why Sonic CD is my favorite as well, except I would have brought up three extra points:
    1. You can obtain the time stones to get the good ending as well by collecting 50 rings and bringing them to the end of the stage, like Sonic 1. This gives the player another way to play, while still emphasizing exploration just as much, turning the game into a collectathon type deal. It was perfectly handled in my opinion. Also the special stages in CD are incredibly fun with a high skill ceiling.
    2. The idea of the good future is not just amazing for story. It’s also genius for gameplay. If you choose the generator route for the good ending, you can see and reflect on the good you’ve done for that zone and it makes you feel great. If you choose the time stone route, you can go to the good future on every stage to play an easier version of the level, acting as a gameplay reward for the player’s hard work.
    3. Even though this is specific to the 2011 port, I enjoy the time trials in CD more than any other Sonic game. As you already know, the levels have much more verticality and variety to them, making speedrunning more of a hassle, in a good way. Figuring out the fastest possible route through a stage and discovering little tricks and skips here and there are a blast through these types of levels.
Shameless plug: you can check out some of my time trials on my channel if you’d like :)

Maybe it's an issue with the mobile version, but there were plenty of times where it felt like something was bound to happen or was happening that I had no part in. For example, one of those sparks from a bomb enemy hit me out of nowhere and it felt very unfair since it was blocked by parts of the level. Another much more common example is getting thrown around either endlessly or into a hazard. It was happening so much to me that I even gave it a nickname, "Getting Collision Chaos'd" to reflect my first experience with it. What made it even worse was how I felt obligated to collect all the time stones since some of generators were placed in some bizarre spots. Now I was not only scavenging for rings, but also having to put up with lost control getting Sonic hurt and seemingly random pot shots.
The other grievance I have with the game is the time travel gimmick. More specifically how some zones had to shoehorn in a two spring corridor to make it possible to time travel in the first place. You have to keep up a pace for ages, and any less could completely erase your chance. There was a very simple solution that would have saved it for me: just require you to pass the sign at a high speed. This would also prevent occasional softlocks and pot shots since the level designers didn't properly account for the teleporting.

Funfact: the christian whitehead remakes actually lenghtened the time it takes to time travel for balancing but theres a mod that restores the (better) original time travel P.S. to fix your camera issue you can turn on the original spindash that makes the camera pan in the direction you're going like it did on the sega cd

Great video Pastra. I've never really understood what makes this game click so much with me despite it objectively having so many flaws. This video puts into perspective so many of the reasons I like this game. The metal sonic segment similarly made me realize why I like the design of the character so much as well.
My only disagreeance is on the soundtrack. When it comes to the atmosphere of the game I think both soundtracks end up flawed in different situations. Notably the american soundtrack has never really had a good future payoff in my opinion. A great example ironically is metallic madness where I feel like the good future is quite underwhelming compared to the Japanese one which actually feels like you've recovered the zone by taking what made the zone unique it's orchestral hit melody and making it bright and cheery. By doing this instead of making it seem like the hope of the zone has beaten the darkness, it more feels like the technology of the zone has now been used for good and the zone keeps its personality but no longer for evil. Of course the Japanese soundtrack isn't perfect (even though it is my preferred one). I think the Japanese soundtracks bad futures are the most underwhelming tracks. For example stardust speedway bad future is super overrated, well it's a good boss fight song it doesn't really fit the atmosphere of a bad future. The past is nice and chill, the present is super groovy, and the good future is uplifting. All of this fits the progression of this metropolis as it evolves over time, so for the bad future it would be fitting to have something that feels desolate like you're walking through a rundown area in a city. So in my opinion the strengths of the Japanese soundtrack are the present in good future will the American soundtrack does a better job with the bad futures.
Anyway long music rant aside really amazing video! I'm excited for the sequel to this video because I feel like the abstract nature of this game could actually come with a lot of interesting horrifying elements.

I REALLY agree with what you said about Metal Sonic, and also about him being the best rival for Sonic. While Knuckles and Shadow might've started as rivals to Sonic, in later games, or even within their introductory game, they eventually grow to be their own characters independent from Sonic (and in Shadow's case he actually works way better that way imo). While Sonic has butt heads with Knuckles and Shadow before, Metal is the only one who actually feels like he opposes him in every way while being at the same level. I might not have the same appreciation for CD that you do; but, you did talk about some cool thoughts on it and might've helped me enjoy it just a little more.

Non-verbal storytelling, through level design and soundtrack, are heavily used to tell Super's story, instead of utilizing long, expositinal cutscenes aside from the cold opening.
Horror elements are present as well, with grotesque boss fights and chilling, abandoned biomes with incredible atmosphere that the player must traverse.

i love how this video highlights metal sonic's outstanding rivalry with sonic and his terrifying duality. as for myself however i always thought he had sort of a frustratingly sympathetic undertone to him. to me it has always seemed like on the surface he is nothing but a mindless killing machine, but beneath that his strive to replace sonic and be better than him leads him to a sad dead end. sonic at his core (despite the numerous interpretations of his character) has heroic and good intentions and is supported by friends that he cherishes and protects. metal sonic has none of this and never will. he was created for the sole purpose of destruction and to surpass his rival and obey robotnik's orders. he is so driven to replace sonic that even upon gaining freedom from robotnik as neo, it's still his only goal. to fulfill his creation as merely a weapon. his desire to replace sonic is completely nonsensical due to those qualities sonic has, however. the want to eliminate him alone goes against sonic's morals. he is evil, sworn to robotnik, has no friends, and no desire to change any of this. he will never meet his goal of becoming better than sonic or replacing him because he cannot under his violent means of doing so. he will never replace sonic because he doesn't understand what it means to *be* sonic and never will.
it's sad because there have been times in the series where sonic has tried to save him or tried to give him the opportunity of starting anew; existing outside of being a weapon and making friends. but every time, he aggresively rejects the offer. he has the potential for redemption but he just wont take it, leaving you upset and frustrated with him.
i have a lot of things to say about him because he is also my favorite rival to sonic for the sheer amount of depth he has that remains mostly unexplored by sega. in my opinion he is heavily underutilized and nowadays reduced to a cameo for fanservice or shoved into media to fill in the blanks without a second thought. he could truly excell in a story, but characters like shadow are far more popular in the modern era and even games where he's more focused on he doesn't feel fully tapped into. i hope that sega will some day bring him into the spotlight again and im breathing major copium for the sonic movies after seeing how well they did knuckles.

In my opinion the Japan one sounds like an energetic challenge against a new rival, where sonic can really put his speed to the test. i love that your branching out to normal content and hearing your thoughts on certain games and how they portraty themselves through music themes and the feelings they invoke

I really love that you completely changed your intro to a pixelated animation. CZcamsrs that do those little details are the ones that become my favorites.

Originally found you through horror, subbed because I just love hearing how *giddily* joyous you are talking about anything you like. Not even a sonic fan (nothing against it, just never played it myself) but watched the whole thing because I think your thoughts are neat.

Wow it feels so good that someone is talking about this so underrated game, it may not be my favorite but for sure it has always been one of my favorites, Metal Sonic is probably my favorite antagonist of the whole franchise, and I love Amy ! I'm so happy to see you make a video about this game, and I'm so excited to see Part 2, especially since honestly, I think all Sonic fans already know what it's going to be about ;)

This was a really nice video, and it did help me to understand the game more, due to my lack of knowledge about the franchise.

I will say that I did sup because horror games is what got me into games in general, from old games like resident evil, silent hill and dead space to new horror games like the evil within, Fnaf, SCP which I’ve been getting into recently, there’s always joy seeing someone thing being horror games and then switching it up by talking about a wholesome game like sonic CD and keeps me interested because there’s a special reason why you talk about it in the first place.
I’ve never played sonic CD before but was invested in it from a horror standpoint but hearing about everything it had to over and even the different music that both the US and Japan versions of the game is quite different that not many games pull off/go for. If I played this game as I kid it would probably be a gem to my life, hell I might give it a shot one day. Keep doing what your doing gamer :3
