    What hurts Nemesis in the remake was that he was treated more as a boss event rather than a randomized ongoing threat. The tension and fear isn't really there when you know when his sections are coming and that the the most of the time, you're just pushing forward and dodging heavily telegraphed attacks for most of the encounters. Don't even get me started on how wasted his first form was.

    Something to add about final Nemesis. In the Original, one of the things that really drive the point of him being on his last legs is the fact that it doesn't immediately fight you - he actually eats up the corpse of a dead tyrant to achieve his final form, and that's the presentation for the fight: you're not his target anymore, he just wants to eat to not die

    • @Umbra_Ursus
      @Umbra_Ursus Před rokem +786

      I don't think it was even eating: I think it was taking biomass to replace what was beyond saving or replacing properly. In other words, we did so much to him by that point, Nemesis wasn't able to properly regen anymore, or even hold a consistent build. It was just desperately clinging, not to life, but being able to hunt STARS. Even in near-death, it's sole goal isn't flight or fight, its to hunt *us.*
      Then the remake is just a big "scary" meat wall with his head still being more-than-less intact, and I wonder what happened to horror games over the years...

    One thing that upset me about the remake was his mutations being completely and entirely beneficial. In the original, the mutations Nemesis underwent looked grotesque and like they were painful. In the remake any time Nemesis undergoes a crippling injury, his body adapts to the damage and becomes an even more powerful monster than he was before -- making you wonder why he even bothers to avoid injury, when injury just seems to make him more powerful. A big contrast is the final forms Nemesis take. Nemesis in the original was this disgusting blob monster, with broken, misshapen legs, that was only barely able to hobble around. In the remake, Nemesis becomes this horrifying tentacle monster the size of a small building, that is now stronger than ever.
    The reason why I bring this up? Because Nemesis at his heart was meant to be a homage to the Terminator, a relentless killer that absolutely will not stop, until you are dead. He doesn't feel pity, remorse, or fear, and he will never despair at his own injuries, but will simply power through them because self-preservation is an afterthought to his primary goal of destroying you. Nemesis going through this gradual breakdown as the story progresses, getting shot, caught in explosions, even having his head melted off by corrosive chemicals, and even falling into a vat of acid, he just refuses to stop. Nemesis, from his activation until his last breath is designed to bring about your doom, and NOTHING will distract him from that mission -- he is completely unfettered by concepts of pain or fear.

      @upsidedownfoxxo879 Před rokem +39

      This is just me spitballing, but maybe nemesis didn't want to go "all out" immediately. He underestimated Jill, packed his weapons and went for a surprise visit not expecting to be torched and blown up inside a subway. Then he realized that he would have to try a little harder, and mutated into the much less practical dog form. In the end he even sacrificed all his mobility in order to be able to withstand her. He's still sacrificing things along the way, like the extra energy it likely takes to "operate" the dog form. I'd imagine that he'd still take that into account, since higher energy consumption and the overall larger size will make pursuing Jill much harder than the vaguely humanoid form

It's weird, cuz they had just handled Mr. X correctly in RE 2, and in the newer games, they had done these types of enemies correctly in Village (Dimetrescu), and especially in 7 (both Jack and Marguerite). To be honest, the remakes design concept COULD work for a different boss. A boss that goes from a sophisticated killer, maybe one with a strict internal code, to something animalistic, chaotic, and unpredictable. A villain going from sipping wine and twirling a mustache to biting someone to death could work amazingly in a narrative. But as a remake, they already had a perfect haracter blueprint. Just use that and play with the horror of mental degradation on a different future character.

    That iconic "Stars" line, has so much behind it. It sounds somewhat monstrous, yes, but it also has a hint of humanity in there. It's so uncanny. Almost sounds like a person, but isn't.
    This guy isn't like the Tyrant or William Brikin, who were acting on simple savage instinct. The human sounding element makes it clear this guy can *think*. He's not monstrous, he's malicious.

    I know this comment is super late, but there is something I would like to point out regarding Nemesis’s transformations in the original and remake.
    In the original, it looks like every time he transforms, it’s not him trying to evolve or gain power, but rather like he is falling apart. He goes from the solid and stable Nemesis in the coat to a rapidly deteriorating form in the chemical factory, before then concluding with what is essentially a maimed corpse with hastily replaced body parts. Nemesis feels like he is falling apart, and that in my opinion both worked to make him visually scary and helped inspire this sense of triumph in the player. He may be able to recover from death, but look what you did to him!
    In the remake they turned Nemesis into a pokemon (or Freiza from DBZ take your pick). He transforms not because he is literally falling apart, but rather because he is changing into stronger (if less controllable) forms. Going from humanoid, to dog, to giant mess of flesh and limbs. It makes Nemesis feel both incompetent and bland. Incompetent because: “Why did he not just start with the 2nd or 3rd form if they are so much better?”. Bland because: “How many bad guys/monsters in fiction can evolve and transform to become stronger intentionally?”.
    That’s just my take on this, anyone else got any thoughts?

    The dog Nemesis could have worked if it was a SEPARATE enemy, effectively being a prototype that you only encounter in the lab, one of the few areas in the game the dog Nemesis could have worked to a genuinely terrifying effect, maybe with it being unable to be killed until the original Nemesis, the one having actually chased us for the whole game, would find it's way into the lab after you and IMMEDIATELY offs the prototype, both giving a plausible reason this version exists that doesn't piss everyone off whilst also bolstering the original's strength and power as well as his threat. That woulda been amazing as an addition.

    • @quinnbernal1398
      @quinnbernal1398 Před rokem +131

      Exactly. The Nemesis that appeared in Raccoon City wasn't the only one of its kind. Having different Nemesis forms being explained by prototypes that weren't completely perfected but still had some usage in Umbrellas plots. I would even take this a step further and have it so instead of Nemesis killing the prototypes, he commands them like an officer with their military dogs, which would make thematic sense since the Nemesis's are bio-organic military weapons.
      This would help fix the issue with design in the context it's used in by having the original Nemesis and the dog prototype bring separate entities, while also allowing for the dog Nemesis to properly shine and make people appreciate it, because I don't see the dog form as a complete downgrade of a second form. In a different viewpoint from Pastra, I see it as something that wasn't utilized right. With this new context in mind, this would make Nemesis more effective and scary in new ways, as now not only do the player have to worry about the original which was already a formidable foe in his own right, but now they have to deal with imperfect clones that while they might not have the intelligence and complete power of the original, are still dangerous in their own right and far more powerful than any other enemies in the game, making the player have to proceed with caution when dealing with them. Then, when they are inevitably killed by Jill, Nemesis would use the carcasses to REPAIR himself since they share the same DNA and make defeating Nemesis much harder than before. This also makes Nemesis more dangerous for an adaptable A.I., as it will now control and manipulate other enemies' behavior in order to kill Jill.
      This can even be taken further by having Nemesis' final form in the Remake to be another prototype that mutated into a monstrosity that Jill now has to defeat. It would serve as a very challenging but fun midboss, reserving Nemesis' final, corpse form from the original as the true final boss. It would both have the grandiose spectacles of the current Resident Evils and the effective last stand of the original RE3. The best of both worlds.
      All of this would strengthen Nemesis's status as an intelligent bioweapon that won't stop until its goals are completed, even if it has to control others to do its bidding.

    Another small detail about how Nemesis is introduced in the original is how Brad begs for Jill to help him moments before his death. At least for me it makes the moment afterwards feel very personal. A member of the group has been attacked and asked for help, help which you did not manage to give. No heroics, just that small hint of relief on his face as he stumbles to you, wounded, then gets off'd by this big, imposing threat that has been ominously foreshadowed, and clearly vocalizing that he wasn't willing or ready to die.

    Nemesis was simply a brilliant concept when it was released. A tyrant that was a reoccurring boss that stalked, toyed, hunted and attacked you relentlessly. Even if the events were pre-scripted they were pre-scripted in a way where your decisions in game factored how you met him. The famous Clocktower scene was legendary because it was the first time in the game where the encounter with Nemesis was forced. You couldn’t escape, couldn’t run out of a door, either you killed him or HE killed you and the game ended.
    All that drama, all that pressure, all of the incredible game of cat and mouse and head games gone.. for a low budget action movie with one of the most foul mouthed female protagonists in recent video game history. Both of Nemesis's later forms in the remake feel weirdly grandiose. The first time I saw the dog form, my first question was how he manages to clearly have so much more mass than he had literally SECONDS before. I know that Tyrants mutate really rapidly and all, but he's structured in such a way that you would need the combined mass of two nemesises or more to get him to that size with that build. The same problem is presented to the extreme with his final form. When he is melted away, you see his entire body solute into the acid. There's no logical explanation for how his cells, which would be destroyed in the acid, somehow replicate fast enough to structure himself back into even the semi-solid body we fight him with in the timeframe that they do. Furthermore, you mentioned how the dog form does look very cool, which I agree with emphatically. The strangest decision about it to me is that they don't just make Nemesis look like a dog, but also follow suit by transplanting a dog's personality into his. Imagine base Nemesis's methodical intelligence combined with such an absolute powerhouse of strength and speed. It would make the logical jump of the size increase and the early transformation infinitely more worth it. Instead, we get a Nemesis that almost acts overwhelmed. Whenever Nemesis runs on the walls, it never seems as if it's a tactical move or even an intimidation tactic. Instead, he runs full speed in circles, as if he's trying to escape but doesn't know how, and whenever he does stop, he takes a long pause hanging off of something, as if he needs to reorient himself before the fight continues. It's as if buffing up his strength diminished his intelligence so severely that he no longer is aware of where he is or what he's capable of doing. The only semblance of intelligence left is that he knows he has to pursue you. That singleminded pursuit is what made original Nemesis so scary, but instead of a conscious pursuit, it's as if Nemesis is fighting with a rabid wolf that has been placed inside of his head, and that objective is the only thing he can remember. And the point about how a character named Nemesis is defeated more by people he's not even looking for than he is by the person he was created to hunt is really sublime. Both of the form transmutations being results of actions taken by somebody else in Jill's defense both robs Jill of her role as the protagonist and Nemesis of the name Nemesis. Both new titles and the remakes preceding and after it are extremely solid. How 3make deviated so far from it's source material is beyond me. I rarely partake in videos this long, but your analysis was thorough and your passion was evident. I am definitely hooked. Bravo!

Nemesis is an enemy who: 1) is built entirely for the sole purpose of killing you; 2) keeps stalking you as an unstoppable juggernaut who never stops; 3) carries firearms; and 4) Suffers damage over the course of the story that gradually makes him less human and more monstrous-looking, yet keep going after you even as if he's crawling on the floor.

      (Hence why the list of Mortal Kombat guest characters goes: Freddy Krueger, Jason, Predator, Leatherface, the Xenomorph, then Terminator.) (Then Spawn and the Joker, cool, then Robocop and Rambo for some reason.)

    The Nemesis novel and Operation Racoon City did a really good job at conveying how tough Nemesis is. In the novel it says that the reason Nemesis changes and mutates is because it was designed to change and adapt to its target and any damage it sustains and its final form is that system overloading while trying to adapt to being dumped into acid. I think if they'd treated him like Mr X in 2 by having him be a constant unpredictable threat always roaming the map would have been so much better

      What they could have done, and in fact it was something I was hoping they were going to do, is make him reactive to your tactics. If you stand your ground and fight him he becomes better at dodging, tanking attacks, and will eventually bring the flamethrower to make standing your ground and taking cover much more difficult. If you run he becomes better at pathfinding, using his tentacles from a distance, and will eventually bring the rocket launcher to snipe you from a distance. If you hide and use stealth he becomes more observant and meticulous in searching areas, begins using vantage points to try and spot you, and will eventually bring a minigun to saturate areas with bullets in an attempt to flush you out. Expand on the idea that he's always thinking and the original game's concept of your actions having consequences and effects on how he behaves. Then give him additional abilities to track and locate you beyond simply seeing or hearing you, and the ability to lay traps and ambushes. Then put a lot more emphasis on the almost open-world concept of the original, where you have multiple goals that you can do in any order, where if you spend too much time in an area he'll eventually find you. This guy could have been next-level if they'd given a fuck.

      They could have also leaned into his constant chase by removing areas where you are safe. For a large portion of RE2 X won’t chase you into certain areas, especially in story sections. They should have leaned into the randomness of his appearance by adding variables that increase the chances of him just showing up and instead of safe areas force, the player kill or hide from him to temporarily escape before he appears again. Maybe even have a set of time before he will automatically appear so if you linger anywhere for too long he’ll be there. That's for sure. Honestly, in a weird reversal Mr. X got way scarier in the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Nemesis lost what made him great. Mr. X in the original is a scripted and semi-predictable occurrence within the game that is there to drain resources at specific junctures in the story. Remake Mr. X is a constant threat that will not leave the R.C.P.D. after you meet him. Yes, his first appearance is highly predictable on repeat playthroughs, but his presence is constantly felt when he begins roaming the entire police department. I get more and more scared to kill anything because my gunshots will attract his attention. He works so well as a stalker because he is designed to always be somewhere near you, but has to actually find you to attack you. He is also horrifyingly intimidating, standing a full foot-and-a-half taller than Leon with a completely black ensemble that leaves only his pale face easily visible at a distance. I will never forget a moment where I was roaming around the first floor hallways. These hallways are barely lit and only the odd lightning strike and Leon's flashlight help with visibility. There was a small group of zombies at the end of the long corridor ambling about. I was at the exact opposite end and I saw them being pushed aside by a nearly invisible force. Until my brain recognized the quickly approaching stomps and I saw the outline sharpen into focus. I still get chills from that memory because he seemed to almost fade out of the shadows and radiated a menace that few horror game villains can hope to match. He made an already anxiety-inducing situation (trying to escape the R.C.P.D. and Raccoon City as a whole) even more stressful. Not to mention his constant presence and overhanging threat that you have to deal with throughout the rest of the game.
      Nemesis in the original was a similar, if not more competent threat in the context of the gameplay. Nemesis in the Remake is a complete joke with absolutely zero menace and minimal difficulty. His appearance is less fear-inducing, his presence absent. It saddens me that this is what people can be introduced to as Nemesis for the exact reason you described. You didn't get the hype and that's a disservice to the character. I actually haven't played DBD because I have heard it isn't in a great state and the sheer amount of money required to be spent to get characters is intimidating to say the least. That said, is he better represented there in the remake?

      Nothing in my entire life, before or since, has made me shit my pants more than that chase. I never trusted the safe room in ANY game ever again.
      *EDIT:* The wiki calls it the Back Alley Storeroom. I am 100% positive that is the room it happened in.

    Nemesis and Legs (from It Steals) are actually kinda similar when you think about it. Both are hulking, monstrous beings that have the goal to murder you. Both hunt you down and there is nothing in their way except you.
    The main difference between them is that Legs is arguably more powerful than Nemesis. Nemesis is hunting you because it has one goal, and it’s not trying to be sneaky. Legs is hunting you for sport, for fun even, it knows you know about it and is staying hidden and playing along. Nemesis can be staggered by weaponry, you can outrun him; Legs can run faster than you, the light won’t stop him, he’s just playing with you, giving you hope that you can live.

    There was a lot of clever things the devs from 1999 did with Nemesis I always appreciated. His move sets increase from the start of the game until form no.2 with all the extra tendrils. He starts off with a punch, charging punch, and a grab. Then later he gets a rocket launcher, a dodge, then a ranged tentacle impalement move. This makes him more unpredictable to fight due to the increased move set as well as the changing settings you fight him in. They had less to work with, but used what they had beautifully.

      I would say Nemesis, Pyramid Head, and Wesker are 3 huge gaming enemies that actually get a fair due in DBD gameplay. They feel very fun to play against and as for me, because I just have a lot of fun running from them.
      Nemesis tho, is actually my absolute favorite to play against out of the 3. I just have so much fun dodging his tentacle strikes, hearing the bombastic chase music that perfectly fits him, etc.
