- Dogs are inquisitive creatures and will often sniff around the house for something delicious to chew on. Rat poison is deliberately formulated to be tasty and appealing to rats and mice, but unfortunately, this also attracts the curious noses of dogs and therefore rodenticide poisoning is one of the most common household dangers to your pet which can lead to certain death if not treated.
In this video, I’ll be explaining exactly what the clinical signs, diagnoses, treatment, and prevention options for rodenticide toxicity in dogs are in order for you to know exactly what you need to do in order to save your pets life.
If you suspect that your dog has come into contact with rat or mouse poison, and you are seeing some of the symptoms listed above, you will need to bring your dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible before your pet's health becomes critical.
Also keep in mind that dogs that go outside frequently are at a high risk of rodenticide toxicity as they might ingest the poison when going into the neighbor’s yard, digging into a trash can, or sniffing it out somewhere in an alleyway. Dogs that engage in the chasing and killing of rodents are also susceptible to rodenticide poisoning, although they do need to eat quite a few rats before it will reach toxic doses.
Even if you do not live in an area where rats or mice are a concern, rodent poison may also be used for other common suburban pests, such as raccoons, opossums, and squirrels.

So happy to find your channel.. I. M from Johannesburg staying in a complex.. Feeding stray cats.. The cats started to disappear.. 2nights ago one come out with bloody nose and mouth.. Took him early the next morning to a vet.. They grab the cat and said we must go.. After half on hour they phoned and said the cat is put down.. They said the cat tongue and gums eaten away.. And the one eye popped of puss.. Lied and said the cat got herpes.. 6 cats dissipear the same week after building management said they going to start poisening the cats.. On the 1st of August 3 of my cats start to vomit non stop then they got paralyzed then they started foaming and fiting.. The one cat died very quickly and the other 2was taken to the same vet.. The one cat is 4 month old he made it.. The other cat over a year old they said he had no red blood cells in his body and the knock him out without trying to help him. They lied again and said the cats got panleukopenia.. Does herpes eats a cats gums away and the tongue??? Now we can never take our cats there again. Becouse we didn't pay them because my friend rescue trap and neuter all the cats then that vet do it for half price.. Because my friend pays half price they knocked my cats out and lied that they weren't poisened.. Becouse it's to much money to do atopsie on animals.. And to much to treat a poison animal.. Please let me know if you think my cats was poisened.. Thank you

My puppy wasn't so lucky
Guys if you puppy and or dog just ate mouse poisoning, PLEASE act immediately, GIVE HIM/HER a couple of tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide no less 30 minutes are over!!! It’ll make your puppy/dog vomit and throw it back up 15 minutes tops immediately, did the same thing for my 7 week old puppy, and he threw up very piece of rat poisoning he ingested; the internet saved his life, because symptoms usually doesn’t show until 3 days later or so.
My pup peed inside which wasn’t normal for her. Luckily was able to see blood. She’ll be okay I think with a month of vit k. Weird thing was the smell of her urine, it was awful
If your pup got into some rat poison just take them to the vet immediately. My procrastination and me thinking that I could do a "home remedy" resulted in me being heartbroken in the end 🙃, in other words my dog didn't make it. Don't hesitate. Go.

The pup I watch picked up the Rat. I’m not sure if the Rat was dead or alive, when he picked it up? Owl‘s can be very helpful when it comes to Controlling this issue 🐀 . Unfortunately to me Rat Poison can & will be a factor for the Owl too, I assume?

Can u add symptoms to rat poison ingestion?
My two 8 month old aussies got into 2nd generation rat poison, and one almost died. Took him to the vet and did exactly as the Dr said in the video to save our dog. The other is on vitamin k as well and didn't knock on the deaths door, but he's still not doing well. He having a hard time sitting or laying down... any ideas to help his up and down motion?

Hi Dr. Pete. My dog ingested Cholecalcifer ( A green poison rat cube). He was in the hospital for discospondylitis and high CREA levels. 13.5 They gave him IV antibiotics. He has been at home now for a couple of weeks and now I'm noticing blood in his urine. I just started giving him subcutaneous fluids to see if that helps him. He won't eat for the past 3 days. I can get him to drink water at times. The timeline now is about 3-4 weeks and I'm concerned. I'm thinking he needs to be readmitted as I can't get him to take oral meds any longer. Any advice would be really appreciated. I live in California.

@@djackson9984 yes! I gave her a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (you'll have to look up the amount needed) to throw up. Then I brought her vitamin K1 (you'll also have to look up the dose for that). I don't remember what else I did. The vitamin K1 was most important.
@@taylamorris Thanks for the response!! My 10LB dog ate half of a large cube of decon. I ended up putting 10ML of hydrogen peroxide in her water bowl (she wouldn't take it any other way) she had a few sips after a few hours and vomited almost immediately after ingesting. SO MUCH decon came up. I'm scared there's still some left. I gave her some activated charcoal and I guess I have to wait until morning for those results . . . I'll be sure to get the vitamin K for her tomorrow! I'm glad to know your dog is ok! I feel a little relieved. ❤

My medium sized pit lab mix ate a whole box of decon it was 10 blocks she was sleeping for about a half a day then back to her normal self.
My dog chewed a lil piece off I noticed and got it out his tooth .. by tomorrow afternoon if he’s not normal I’m taking him in

Like a knob I turned my back for a minute when in my bottom shed that I had put rat poison under the floor . Yep my puppy terrier came in I returned to the house he came after me and yep he had a block of poison in his mouth I tried to rinse his mouth out then straight to the vets where they made his sick he brought up a far amount of the poison he is now having charcoal tablets and going back to the vets Monday fingers grossed I’ll report the outcome

So im not 100% sure if my dog ingested it or what. But we had some under our fridge and i found the posion in our hallway just about 20 mins ago. Looked like it was chewed on but not broken. And its to late to call our vet. i gave both of my dogs a cap of peroxide to get them to throw up.

My dog ate an expired rat poison yesterday. I tried to induce vomiting but she didn't vomit. There's no vet clinic in our area. I'm so worried right now.

@@zacharyscottgraham i took my dog to vet immediately and she is fine. Never showed any symptoms. I had to give her vitamin K pills though for 5 days. I don't think that she ate a large dose.

@@jai9402 if possible keep the packaging of the poison and the dog to the vet as soon as you possibly can. I took my dog to the vet first thing in the morning and since it was over 12 hours past ingestion, he said the only thing I can do is wait for symptoms so he can treat them accordingly. You and your dog are going to be okay. Just do what the vet says. My dog surprisingly never showed any symptoms and I kept a close watch on her for 7 days. I guess she didn't eat enough.

@tyrone I induced vomiting and I kept checking up on her if she was vomiting blood or has blood on its gums .....she didn't eat for a few days but days but she got better plus she only ate little poison

How are your dogs getting into rodenticide! Seriously people are ridiculous. Watch your dogs. Be responsible! And stop throwing rodenticide around like its bird feed. Read the label!
