    DETOXING YOUR PET + DOSAGES:
    Hey Guys, Im Dr. Lindsay Butzer a small animal veterinarian. Today were going to teach you when to use Activated Charcoal to bind toxins in your pets stomach, what dose and how to give it to detox your pet if they ate something toxic and you cannot get to a veterinarian.
    The most common toxic substances ingested by dogs I see in the ER are:
    Chocolate, Marijuana, coffee K-cups or COFFEE beans, Xilitol in gums and processed foods, grapes, and Tylenol or Advil and Lilly flowers in cats.
    Activated charcoal when ingested by pets, goes into the stomach and through the intestines where it absorbs and binds any of the chemicals or toxicants within the GI tract. Once it binds the toxins it facilitates excretion via the feces, and your pets will poop it out black, just like it came in.
    But before you give Activated Charcoal, and you notice your pet ate these substances, you should immediate try to make them vomit out what they ingested using 3% Hydrogen Peroxide which you can buy from any drug store.
    The dose to make them vomit is 1ml per pound of body weight. This means a 10lb dog would need 10ml and a 80 pound Labrador would need about ½ cup of peroxide. And is safe to give to make them vomit. Cats on the other hand may not vomiting using hydrogen peroxide and you will need to bring them to your veterinarian.
    If it has been more than 1 hour, vomiting can be unsuccessful at expelling's the toxins and that is when we definitely need Activated Charcoal.
    The dose for dexoting your pet using Activated Charcoal is 0.5 - 1.5 grams per pound of body weight (0.5-1.5gm/lb); therefore a 5lb dog would need 2.5 to 7.5 grams of activated charcoal. A 10lb dog would need 5-15 grams. A 100lb dog would need 50-150 grams.
    As a pet parent you may only have access to capsules sold at your local drug stores such as CVS or WALGREENS these are normally 250mg per capsule. So you will feel like you are giving a lot of capsules, but don’t worry, activated charcoal is safe and you wont overdose them on it. They will poop it out.
    So, to not complicate the math, A safe rule of thumb is to give a 10lb dog up to 5 to 20 capsules of the 250mg of activated charcoal. You really cannot over dose your pet on activated charcoal. Just use common sense and don’t give them the entire bottle, unless you have a mastiff then you may need it.
    To give it, you simply pill your dog's with the activated charcoal pills or you can open the pills and mix it into some wet food or yogurt for your pet to lick up OR you can mix it in water and gently syringe feed it to your dog. At vet hospitals we have liquid bottled forms that we use.
    Depending on what toxin your pet ate, I advise all pet owners to give them 2-4 activated charcoal pills every 6-8 hours or three times a day, for 2 days to continue to bind any recirculating toxins in the blood stream that go through the GI tract.
    Alright guys, like always, see your veterinarian if you have a toxic emergency. Don’t forget to Subscribe to my channel and I’ll see you next week with another veterinary video!

    My puppy got a hold of rat poison that fell off the top shelf in the garage.
    Vet told me that all they could do for him was force him to throw up and do black charcoal treatments. So I gave him hydrogen peroxide and he threw up 4 times. Ran to the Walmart and got the pill form activated charcoal and just have him 13 capsules with yogurt and he took it like a champ! 30lb Lab/Pit mix. Hopefully this helps him. Thank you for what you do!

      Update. He was fine in a day or 2. Just didn’t want to eat I’m sure due to the hydrogen peroxide

    By the time these videos are done with the introductory plugs for websites, I suppose thousands of animals perish. Seriously, people are here to learn about how and how much charcoal, period....it's not a casual nail trimming search.

    Remember that when online vets day the word "pets", they mean dogs and occasionally dogs and cats, NOT any of the other dozens of other animals people have as pets.

    THIS WAS INCREDIBLY helpful! My greyhound just ate 1/2 of a dark chocolate bar. I made her barf it up with the hydrogen peroxide and she happily ate the charcoal yogurt. Then she drank a lot of water.

    Thank you, my dog had some CBD oil that was expired 2022, it seems to be making him tic, like arm and head jerking. I gave it to him last night I just realized now that's what it was, so I ordered the activated charcoal to be delivered today from Amazon, it should be here in a few hours. But he does seem better already and he's not doing that anymore, but I'm still going to give him the activated charcoal for a few days. He's in 19 lb dog. 2 pills are 1200 mgs, so how many do I give him?

    Ok, but when I eat out and I don't eel so good, I take
    1- 500 MG capsule and I weigh
    130lbs. 6- 3milliiters syringe foe a 10lb pet seems very excessive lol

  • @natvali4030
    @natvali4030 Před rokem +6

    The math seems wrong for the pills. The pills have 280 mg each (560 in 2)… so 1.4-2.8 grams in 5-10 capsules. But the minimum dose you said was half a gram per lb body weight. So wouldn’t the 14 lb dog need at least 7 grams? Which would be 25 capsules?

    • @elliehs
      @elliehs Před 10 měsíci +2

      Yes. Should be 2x since each cap is 260mg not 520mg, which is per serving. I just gave mine 20 caps. Originally gave her 10 caps but was too low, her stool. I hope this time it works.

    • @drlindsaybutzer
      @drlindsaybutzer  Před 6 měsíci +1

      You have to be careful with cats if they vomit it they can aspirate. But I have given it to my cats about 2-3 pills mixed with water syringe feed it gently to them or mix in their wet food and syringe the wet food to them. I hope this helps. But also go to your vet for best results in detoxifying a pet.

    Beautiful vid Dr.Lindsay. it's good to know this stuff. It could save the lives of our furry friends. I've saved it to my playlist.
    Question: I've made charcoal before by putting wood in a can and putting it in the fire. Would that be ok to give to a pet that needs to be detoxed?
    Thanks.❤️🐶

    • @drlindsaybutzer
      @drlindsaybutzer  Před rokem +3

      Hey! No, You have to give activated charcoal that is created by a vitamin company or other company that is okay for ingestion. I dont know what other harmful chemicals are in charcoal used for a fire.

  • @hollybabcock1803
    @hollybabcock1803 Před rokem +1

    In addition to activated charcoal, your pet needs fluids and monitoring after ingesting toxins.

  • @hollybabcock1803

    Or… call animal poison control. Different protocols for different poisons. Or call vet triage. Or go to an ER vet. There are a lot of options here.
