Can Toyotas Handle 37" Tires?

- Today we take on part of the Rubicon Trail, one of the most well-known trails in California, to see if this vehicle is capable of handling 37" Tires. Along with my own, there were a few other Toyotas all on tires in the 37" - 40" range with IFS (one Toyota had a solid axle on 38s but still had the factory 8" diff).

Best 3rd gen on CZcams! Awesome video of ifs running on big rocks
Thank you! Next task is to beef it up to run reliably in the big rocks 👌🏼
Badass 3rd Gen and video! Absolutely enjoyed this vid 100%…. Keep up the great work and footage!
Awesome video! Cool to see your runner in action!
Damn man you are a beast, that was fun to watch!
Very impressive!
Love these videos
Thank you!
Awesome got 38’s for my 2017 Tacoma, not installed yet but I do already have RCV axels. Hope the dif lasts. Thanks for the video. Happy trails
Clinton was in the white 5th Gen on 40s. He ended up breaking the front diff housing the other day 😬
Like you said only as strong as the weakest link.
Overhaul the needle bearings .
Needle bearing swapped
Beast!
Ay that fj and white 4runner the homies
Nice Video!! This is isa4funner btw. 🤙
you may want to upgrade RCVs from here on. 😂 . I'll probably try Rubicon once I get my rig dialed in and I will hit you up if you're down! lol. Looks like a fun trail!
I should but I don’t wanna drop $2k on it 😅
No no and no, You guys build them a lot more delicate than us old school wheelers use 2
I run lotus dev CVs and they're awesome for the money.
Very cool man, IFS for the WIN!!!
Quick question why can't you have the steering wheel at full lock with the locker engaged?
Thanks! It has more to do with the axle itself. The CV axle is at its weakest when it is turned. In this case the outer cage on it broke. Of course this combined with the lockers puts a lot of strain on the joint. Some aftermarket axles like RCVs or Lotus have a chromoly outer cage which makes it much stronger in these scenarios (I think they both have chromoly)
@@SnowboundCustoms Right on man thank you. That actually makes sense to me.
Considered 37s on a 92runner 1UZ doing 32s as daily-driver However that needs some frame, steering and sump mods work all together needing engineers certificates in Australia. Yeah Naah and 98 petrol has doubled $$per litre so daily will be an overal $$$ mission. For the work I would be going crazy with adding a driveline for 40s madness then only able to race or something... it's clutch n winch time next for me, although ur rigs smicko n great vid too.
Hey man, what exhaust are you running? Sounds good 👍
Just a cheap flowmaster super 40 I think but it kinda drones at certain RPM ranges
are you running falcon wheels and dont they makes ring protector if it really bad in shape
What was needed to clear 37s ? Are you geared down in the axles ?
What rims are they ? So nice
What kind of lockers are you running on this rig ?
You should look into the outboard shock relocation mod, you can fit longer travel shocks in the rear and I think it’ll give your rig more articulation. You already got giant tires on it, might as well give them some more function.
Right now I’m almost done building myself a custom +2” width per side front Longtravel and I’m gonna start on an outboard shock relocation next
@@SnowboundCustoms very cool, look into BTF fabrication's front long travel kit they have machined heavy duty CVs for more durability offroad.. You're custom fabbing your own Lower and upp control arms/spindle?? That's dope, i want to try my hand at that myself someday.
@@jvogler_art4708 yes I am. I can send you a pic of it if you dm me on Instagram. I considered doing other LT kits on the market, but I was never really a fan of the front end being 9” wider than the rear. I always thought it made the truck look goofy and incomplete.
In regards to the CV axles, I already have them custom made. I believe BTF uses OEM CV joints. My axles have outer OEM cv joints, but the inners are custom made with a chromoly cage. That’s the part that broke in this video and seems to be the most common breaking point so it should be significantly stronger
What size body lift did you put on?
What kind of wheels on that FJ ima get them t7s too but then seen those 😮
Stealth custom series Ray 10s! That’s one of the rare colors that they don’t release too often and usually it’s always sold out
So sick. What’s the minimum tire size you need/recommend to do the rubicon?
My main recommendation is lockers. We use a single locker everywhere and that’s the minimum. Two is pretty handy in some instances. Ideally 35s but I know someone did it on 33s. You’ll have more trouble with ground clearance with the smaller tires and get hung up more but still doable
@@SnowboundCustoms are you running dual lockers ? Electric or air ?
@@RonBurgandy yes dual ARB air lockers
@@SnowboundCustoms will I be able to run rear ARB lockers with the OEM non locker rear diff ? Or do I have to cut out a notch like the OEM e locker rear diff ?
@@RonBurgandy yup! And that’s what I have. I have the non elocker diff
is that chuckyp in front? 👋🏽😁 67uno 🏖
What do you mean by 7 and a half inch front dif and 8’ dif rear? Thanks in advance
That’s the size of the ring gear in it. The bigger the gear, the stronger it will be
What’s the engine you have?? Stock v6 still? Or did you drop in a V8?
Iv got a 4.7 sequoia, that way when I lift it higher and bigger tires it’s still got enough torque to get me places and not have to engine swap. And having the heated leather seats and sunroof is pretty great also lol
just the stock 3.4 v6 still. The engine doesn't matter much when in 4low. It will have more than enough torque. I never use more than half throttle. On the highway is a different story haha
@@SnowboundCustoms Iv just found the traction control or ATRAC and locker work better when you’ve got higher torque but the low gear does make the biggest difference. I just love having that 4.7 because it still gets the same gas mileage as any of the 4.0 v6 s they have today in the 4 runners but has about 80+ torque and the same hp. Iv driven both and there’s no replacement for engine displacement in the v8
More than likely you over extended the CV and it probably broke because it was barely holding onto the cup.
If your steering isn’t limited, you might want to limit it by a few degrees, and go back to OEM CV’s.
Good video 👍🏻
Hmmm it’s already limited by the tire hitting the frame first haha
Any info on how to get 35s on there without breaking stuff 😂
What's the width on those tyres
37x12.5x17
What gearing do you have?, Automatic transmission?
5.29s with an auto!
I broke an axle and differential on 33s.... the factory suspension on 3rd gens is just weak.
I say no. But they’ll do it.
SAS time.
"Let's see how tuff these CV axles are" -> "I'm not going to attempt this obstacle, it might break a CV axle" then you break one off camera, now neither of us get good content lol
Also anyone know of front diff upgrades? Maybe one from a tundra?
Front diff plenty strong. At least the 8" is.
Most hardcore trail that a stock jeep can do 😂
Everyone running these shitty milestars .. sidewalls are trash .. much better tires out there ..
Is there not only one person in the e video with milestars?
Na Geolanders
I like the Milestar Patagonias, yeah older models sidewalls were trash. But, I know first hand it survived KOH on a race 4Runner and it took care of me on the Rubicon twice, the whole trail and the long drive to and from the trails including Johnson Valley. I think I now have 15k miles on it and i air down to 8 psi regularly. I would run other tires, when they become available in the size i want. Lol
Thanks for showing footage and not just saying “no”🫡🫡
is that chuckyp in front? 👋🏽😁 67uno 🏖
Yes!
