Question of the Day ⚡ Which microphone do you think sounds better? Let us know! 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼****** Check out the Rode Videomic NTG HERE ➡️ amzn.to/2Xqe61i *****Check out the Rode Videomic Pro Plus HERE ➡️ amzn.to/3ggLekD
I did a sound comparison video of these two not long ago on my channel ( czcams.com/video/rhN_lwf_dKo/video.html ) ... it's was close call. I think the NTG is a little better 🤔.
Perhaps the most important difference between the two mics was not highlighted: the Pro (and Pro+) have replaceable batteries, the Pro being 9V and the Pro+ being 2xAA. The NTG has an internal rechargeable battery that is not user replaceable. This means the NTG's battery performance will degrade over time and if the battery dies in the field, the recharge time is up to 2 hours. That said all models can be powered over USB as well with the Pro and Pro+ having micro-USB ports and the NTG having USB-C.
Despite this huge drawback, I own the NTG and love it. It works reasonably well as an on-camera/smartphone mic and on a boom pole. But I find myself using it most at my desk in post because it's a fantastic USB mic for everything from VO to Zoom calls. I'm an audio engineer so normally I shun budget mics, especially USB mics, in favor of a traditional studio signal chain but this NTG is bringing me into the modern age, at least until the battery craps out.
Yes, good think putting it up..
Now I have a question.. if used as a USB mic for laptops or desktops.. won't the battery get overcharged since it's being charged too while plugged in as a USB mic?
just here to send you a big thank ! you've helped me so much with this channel to grow my very humble one. i've followed you step by step and it worked amazingly ! keep on the good job ! 👏
they've got a whole bunch of nice advices. and gl on your yt journey lock ! i just subbed ^^
Thanks a lot! It's always a problem with figuring out which Mic to use! Great content!!!!
Sean and Jordan. Just saw your video post. My comment is not so much about this post, but about your vision. I just crossed the 5K subscriber mark and appreciate the work your guys do. You have provided me essential tips and techniques that I have used to tweak my channel. I look a whole lot less rough around the edges thanks to you and a few others. Those of us starting out really appreciate your content. Six months in and I have no intention of giving up.
LOVING this topic Think Media! Gratitude and keep rocking the conscious content from this new CZcamsr who you've positively inspired to start my own channel 😊🙌🏼 Blessings ✨
Thank you for the review! I almost got the Rode VideoMic Pro+ so I'm grateful I saw this first. Both look awesome!
Will use these mics for vlogging and interviews
Thanks fir the detailed review! I now know which mic to get and hopefully improve my channel audio. Subscribed and keep up the good work
Thank you so much for starting the video with the answer. Then explaining why. It’s frustrating when reviews don’t cut to the point.
Thanks. I’m learning what equipment I need when I upgrade from my cell phone
I took that cable off mine and use the VideomicPro+ lead. The NTG lead is too stiff and awkward for my preferences.
The NTG is louder because it’s a lot more sensitive. However, it can also clip more easily on peaks and reducing the input doesn’t help. The VideomicPro+ can record much louder sounds.
Hey Ian, turning down the invariable gain control knob will help you reduce clipping in your audio recording. You might need to reduce the preamps in your camera and increase the gain preamps in your microphone so the gain control knob is more effective. The VideoMic NTG also has a peak warning light. Whenever you see the light on, I'd recommend reducing the gain on the VideoMic NTG. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for sharing! I was having really hard time to choose which mic I should buy
I'm just looking at microphones now, the NTG looks like a solid choice, thanks for the comparison
Yet another great upload!💯
i normally use the RODE video micro mic , for making the photo editing tutorials , this NTG mic would be a game changer
I need it! great advice to improve my channel
Trying to get in to vlogging and also some studio shooting! This would be perfect for what I need.
We recently replaced our video mic pro with the NTG. Couldn’t be happier, such a versatile and easy mic to use. Gain control knob, USB C connectivity with audio monitoring, auto power on & off, works with both TRS & TRRS mic jacks, solid build and good battery life.
i dont usually comment on your videos but im one of your regular viewers @Think Media Your channel helped me chose what camera to buy to start our vlogs. Continue sharing tips for us newbies. God bless you always.
Think Media your always on point and your inspire me a lot
Hey? Which extension cable should I use for my ntg to mount on my boom pole for my canon 90D? I got the rode VC1 10 inch cable but it keeps cutting out and I hear static. Which extension cable should I buy or what can I use to extend the cable?
Thanks man, am gonna buy it right now, thanks for the descent review. peace
Sound such an issue on my first few vids . Got a camera but been using my phone, considering getting a Rode for both. What else are people using to film their first few vids on?
Great great comparison. Thank you sir !
For videos I use a blue yeti as I'm desk based, but I might grab the NTG for when I start doing stuff that isn't! Great video!
No Doubt 😀👍
Just starting out and got the Rode video ntg as part of a vloging set. it's well worth the money.
Thank you for the video. I think that the NTG sounded better. I have been looking at buying a new mic and I think the NTG is going to be the one. We are full time RV travel vloggers (I also work full time in construction management). We shoot travel videos, RV DIY, national park videos, RV park reviews, etc...
Great mic . We will keep using it and make even more amazing videos
What clip are you using to have the NTG on the right side to still be able to use the flip up screen? Great video by the way!
Amazing video! Keep it up. Notification gang.
Great stuff as always.
negative 10 DB is more than enough, i recently shot a video using power tools and the negative 10 was very very quiet. i love my Video Mic Pro Plus... Also being Australian i love Australian Companies and Love Australian Made even more!
Deity VMic D3 and D3Pro for on camera work while the SMic 2s for studio work. They all offer great sound and value for money.
Great video I like the sound of the NTG better - how did you extend the cable in your set up Thanks
Thanks for this comparison, helps a lot.
You said you don't know what they did to make the NTG compatible with phones. I can see on your desk that the Pro plus have a TRS 3.5 plug, so 3 poles while the NTG have TRRS plus, 4 poles, that's what's make it compatible without any additional adapter. Hope I'm not wrong.
on the videomic pro 2011 version, today I just found that the hotshoe mount (one with 4 teeth at top) is loose. I can't figure out how it connects and doesn't look like there was glue there. Should there be a pin and nut to hold it?
Hi. I know you guys like the boya mics. I bought the by-bm3032 2 weeks ago and I am loving it. It is supposed to be the videomic pro plus equivalent. Did you had the chance to test it? I’d love to see a review on it. Thanks.
I have the Rode Video NTG.. I dig it a lot.
30hrs is more than enough..
The pro plus is a great mic.. but the NTG is awesome & gets the job done well.
Thank you so much i am looking for it
Question! :)
Won't the NTG mic get overcharged if used as a USB Mic in a laptop or desktop?
Thanks for answering!
We’re starting vlogs and this will be super helpful. We How to grow big here with Zocca
I liked this video because I didn't know my NTG Mic could move! Thanks! I'm having difficult figuring out what the symbols mean and the best way for me to format it for what I'm shooting. I'm sure most people know all this already, I'm such a beginner that I have no clue what the mic looks like at a standard setting! Why is it so hard to find this info!? I'll keep trying everything until i figure it out. Thanks for the help!
Had to come back to say the VM NTG I received sounds more natural than the VMP+. Easy decision to get VM NTG. The USB output for consistent voiceover is nice. I doubt battery life will be a problem, but will be picking up a 12v to USBC adapter to power mic from a monitor that already powers the camera. The markings are relative boosts, not absolute, so no surprise the VM NTG is 6dB hotter than the VMP+ when both are at max boost.
A shotgun mic will be my next purchase. Currently I'm using a Boya BY-M1 Lav mic. Its great but I live in a noisy street and its picking up background noises a bit. A shotgun mic will definitely help reduce this. Another great video, thanks!
Nice video. I'm trying it today. Will do a review as well. Keep up the good work. Cheers
Dope equipment to have !
Rad video, I shoot mountain bikes! Pretty torn between these two. I have been using a Video Stereo Mic X and love it but in louder environments i am picking up too much background noise, great mic none the less.
Interesting. I have the Pro Plus. I have been playing around with different mic set ups for video conferencing. I didn't like the Pro Plus because I would need an extra plug to keep it charged, and I didn't want the extra step of removing it from the stand to charge. In my space, booming a mic isn't a good fit. I am going to try the Rode Reporter mic because the pattern might make it easier to place. Someone suggested a lav. I might try that too, but that would be on camera.
Just got a Tonor microphone for my videos, what do you guys think of that microphone?
Thank you so much boss for your explanation 😍😍
Youre welcome!
This is off subject, but I have a camera question. I started a CZcams cooking channel and use my go pro 7 black as my main camera. I wanted to purchase another camera for my main, and use my go pro for a second camera for over head close ups and what not. Any suggestions for a main ? I don’t know much about cameras so not sure where to start. I am receiving the 2020 iPad Pro Friday so will be editing with Luma fusion from now on. If that matters at all for what I get. BTW I just started watching your vids and find them very informative and easy to sit through. Thank you for any advice you can give me.
I have the M50 with a 11-22mm lens for the rode videomic pro plus. such a great combo for sit down videos and vlogging.
We've been having some sound issues related to the mic we've been using, so this video was extremely helpful. Thank you!
I am thinking about the NTG to live stream my band... do you think it’s a good choice. I would be placing in with the camera about 15-20 feet from the band (we need to spread out for social distancing purposes)
You were asking us to comment about what types of videos we post on our channels. Well, I post what i hope are fun and informative journeys in Bangkok, Thailand. Just getting started but got 15,000 views my first month....thanks in many ways to YOUR channel. Thanks Think Media!!
Cool!
Gotta love Thailand!
I am looking for all the necessary equipment for my son’s and I start our own CZcams video, we open the channels few years ago, but haven’t film any video. He will be talking about sports and I may be doing makeup or talking about politics, music, lifestyle. Filming on the streets as well in the future. This video came on time, I was just searching on Amazon and stores.
Good review !
What audio level do you have on your sony camera? I have a a6500 and a rode pro compact mic and I'm picking up so much background noise! Not sure where that's coming from though because everything is the room is turned off! I'm so sad because it's an investment and doesn't seem to be working for me.
Everything that I could have expected very good
Thanks for this great comparison video. May I know what is the model of the Sony camera in the video, please?
Thanks just picked up mine!
crush!
Hope you enjoy it!
Damn ur a lifesaver. Ive started posting music and this helps so much
Awesome!
@@nolanmolt appreciate it
I was really surprised to find this site where gift card codes are free instagiftcards.online
I have the Rode Videomic NTG but I still get a hiss sound (even I updated the software) in my room. I'm using it at the same height and setup as you Nolan. I use a Canon EOS R, what do you think I should improve to remove that noise?
same
It's hard to know for sure... But my guess would be that your preamps on your camera are high? Try turning your pre amps all the way down like I did and then use the dial on the microphone to adjust your levels. Have you tried that?
I think Nolan might be right. If you turn down the preamp in your camera and turn up the preamp (knob) on the microphone, the hiss should reduce! If it doesn't, email service@rode.com and our service team will help you troubleshoot!
RØDE Microphones Oh thanks! Will definitely hit the support up if i’m still having problem. But I’m a big RODE supporter!
Thanks for your awesome content, it helps me a lot to grow and improve my channel 😘 from 🇲🇾
I use the NTG and I can’t say enough good things about it!!!
Of I gained 98 subscribers on my first edited vide in 6 days is that's good
Same!
Bottom line, the mics are comparable with one big exception. The VideoMic NTG has a high response on the low frequencies. If you have a normal voice, these two mics will have no real difference between them. However, if you have a radio voice, a deep resonating voice, the VideoMic NTG is by far your best choice. I have the studio version the NT1 mic and it makes my deep voice so sexy !!!!
NTG seems a great mic, so I just got NTG and it came with 3.5 mm jack with three rings. I think that my cannon camera needs TRS( two rings) cable. When I plugged in this cable to my camera, it is very lose on my camera and becomes disconnected if I move camera slightly. Would you know if this is normal?
I have a M50 with videomicro, do you think it’ll be a significant upgrade if I buy the NTG? Also do I just plug it straight into the camera or should I get a preamp/mixer/audio interface?
Yes
You plug it straight in
Love the video man. I am definitely buying that mic. Unrelated question. How do you make the background this red. Can you please link it in your answer.
Thx
I have a fan/light in the middle of the room on the ceiling with 3 RGB bulbs that I can change from my phone. And then 1 more in the lamp you see in the shot. I;ll be making a video on this in the future!
@@nolanmolt please do. That is golden. I am a new creator and i do follow good honest advice. Nolan you are doing great job. I have a lot of respect for you. Think media is very lucky to have you.
what about run and gun travel shooting? does the NTG still hold up?
I just got the movo have yet to use it but the tests that i did sound good and more convenient then the lav mic
I bought a Rode VideoMic NTG Camera but now I am struggling with getting an arm for it. any suggestions? I haven't seen in any video taking about the arm!
I was literally thinking about this last night.
Hahah, amazing!
Can you do a comparison of Rode NGT1 and NGT5 and NGT3? Also a video about these microphones for CZcams. I want to improve my mic and get one of those, would love to get the Rode NGT3!!
Can u get a small microphone to use on a Dji osmo Mobile & to fit on it.
Thank u
Thanks for good content
Hi! Amazing video, what settings better for plus pro use fur CZcams vision am record at home
Which mic would you recommend for someone who wants to start a youtube channel, also what equipment should I get? Which camera ? Which laptop? Which programs do I need?
Check out ThinkGearGuide.com
Thank you for the comparison. Is either of these mics god for recording 2 people talking, like in an interview?
can I plug it in to the Mic Plug of a PC and it work just as good?
I'm a newbie creator, so I have a cheap $30 microphone from amazon that I used on my canon m50 but when I level up I am def upgrading to the Rode
Awesome!
I like the Takstar or the Boya Lav. While these are better the price is crazy in comparison to the quality you get.
Need to save some money for a m50 so I can use an external mic. Dream camera and mic so I can make higher quality vids
Thx, for video
I just ordered the Deity D3 . Heard great things.
I got a D3 Pro recently. It's fantastic.
Great choice, I have the D3, D3Pro and SMic2s.
NTG won out for me. That USB-C and gain controls are awesome
Bro thanks for your help b
so if I want to do voice-overs ... i dont need to buy NT1A or NT2A. RODE NTG will serve the purpose?
Hey! I'm thinking about using it to record live videos of my band. Do you think the NTG would work for this?
It would work, but probably not the best. A shotgun mic more focuses in on one direction so you would be getting louder levels from whatever band member it is pointed at. The Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro would give you more of an accurate recording of what the room sounded like.
@@nolanmolt very cool, thanks for the recommendation!
To be honest having been on CZcams for half a year and now uploading every single day for a while I found that for me personally lavalier mics work waaay better than shortgun...any thoughts on this?
I bet you get less room noise with the lav. Do you use a wireless one or wired?
I think the problem with those mics are that you're the only one with a mic. With a shotgun you can aim it at anyone and it will pick up good sound.
Music & Leadership exactly! I use a wired one from Sony, you can check out the quality on my latest videos
BestRolf for someone who only at this point of time shoots headshot videos, it works well for me:)
Zenperial thanks 😊
Hey! I do tech reviews and unboxing. I also do outdoor interviews for work. Which one of these is the best option for me? Great work and keep it up!
The new Deity double ended mic is the boss.
Hi! I was thinking on making videos in 2 languages, like one video in English and the other one in Portuguese. Both of subtitles. What do you think?
What if I leave the Rode NTG permanently connected to my computer via USB? Will that degrade the NTG battery?
I assume it will because my computer is on all day when I work and it'll probably trickle charge the NTG battery, just like when you leave a laptop connected to the wall socket.
I'm hoping this isn't the case though, hence why I'm asking.
I will love to order two for my channel
Thank you so much for sharing this information. I'm going to start a gaming channel
Sweet, what games?
For my vlogging I use the Movo VXR10 for vlogging and the audio technica at2020 for normal talking head videos.
Nice!! Do you like that Audio Technica Mic?
Nolan Molt it’s amazing!
What about a boya... I use it in my vlogs and it is awesome
How does this connect with my gopro 10 using a boom stand?
Used the go....it is a great mic, but lately Been using the rode video mic Go. Wireless.
$200, but worth every penny.
Is this still your preferred mic?
@@zoezzzarko1117 actually the rode was great, but I'm currently using the sennheiser mke400
@@KevinNordstrom Im looking for a mic for voice overs and possibly low-voice (not asmr, but low like that) vids... would the Sennheiser work for that (I am an audio noob 🙄)
@@zoezzzarko1117 for sure. its arguably the best shotgun right now $200 or less
@@KevinNordstrom wonderful... thanks so much for your help/guidance !!
