      I was more a fan of the Rode than the Deity. Question back at you... the Rode VideoMic NTG can be used as a standalone USB mic (plugged directly into your laptop via USB cable). Does the Deity offer the same functionality?

    I have both. They sound almost identical, really hard to tell, and very close to my MKH 416 (!!). Really good job from both Rode and Deity, thanks for bringing such a good sound quality for this price!
    One important thing that wasn't mentioned in this review, the Deity can be connected to a balanced XLR which is very important to get a better sound when using an external recorder or a pro camera. And also the D3 Pro location kit comes with the XLR adapter and a second handheld-type Rycote shock mount, I got mine in sale on Amazon for $249 which is a lot more value than the Rode for the same price.
    If I had to pick just one, I would go with the D3 location kit : same high quality sound, more value/accessories, and pro features/XLR, (and Rode copied them).

    They both sound really good!! Rode also has a really cool feature where you can record separate audio levels on the left and right channels. Which is perfect for when a loud noise happens or something clips, the right channel will be -20 of the left channel. Meaning you can bring back the clipped audio! Awesome video!!

    I think a key point for the Rhode mic is that it can be used as a USB-C microphone into the computer and dedicated as one. I think it's a far better option than Deity's with having to plug it into the a mic jack of a laptop. The auto turn-on and off feature for Rhode is pretty quick. I've been using the Rhode NTG and although I don't need it, it does allow a headphone jack for monitoring audio for cameras that may not have that jack. I also keep on the dual channel recording incase audio does peak randomly. It gives me a nice safety net to choose in post.

    It is really nice that most of the new cameras coming out don't create much internal static so boosting the sound natively form the mic isn't as big a deal any more. Old cameras and cheap cameras will still have this problem. What mic are you guys using. RODE VIDEO MIC PRO here.

  • @electrichimp
    @electrichimp Před 3 lety +2

    Hi! So, I’m a complete sound-rookie and was hoping you could help me understand the real differences between XLR and 3.5mm microphones. From what I’ve been able to learn, the basic differences are: 1. XLR cables are balanced and a safer way to do long connections without having interferences; and 2. XLR mics need phantom power to work. But other than that, do XLR microphones output better sound quality compared to a good 3.5mm microphone? If the only real advance of XLR only comes with their cables… Wouldn't it be better to use a 3.5mm microphone (which tends to be more versatile, like the Rode Video NTG) and use and 3.5mm-to-XLR converter when you need to do a long connection to continue using the more trusted XLR cables?

    Great video! Thanks for the valuable information! Question for anyone that may be in the know. I recently purchased the Videomic NTG hybrid to use atop my Canon M50 for vlogging and for boom placement for talking head video. The NTG works great atop the camera with the supplied Rode SC10 patch cable.
    B&H (multiple reps) ensured me the Rode SC1 extension cable would work to connect the NTG to the M50 for boom application (since the NTG can accept both TRS or TRRS cables). The SC1 does not work. Read online that others had a similar experience. However I have not been able to find info on what cable would work to connect the Videomic NTG to the M50 for boom application. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Good luck to all!

    I just got mine today but can not get it to work. Trying to use is with a new canon SL3. Could it be the Jack has three rings and I need two? Am I supposed to charge it via usb on my laptop first? I had it powered through my computer. In playback loud buzzing can hear audio.

      Which mic did you get?
      > Am I supposed to charge it via usb on my laptop first? I had it powered through my computer. In playback loud buzzing can hear audio.
      I would charge it up before you use it- For the NTG, 2 hours of charging gives 30 hours of use.
      When the USB is plugged in, it is a USB mic and the 3.5mm jack becomes a headphone socket. Try without the USB.
      > Could it be the Jack has three rings and I need two?
      The Rode has a smart cable which detects whether you are going to a smartphone (TRRS) or a Camera plug (TRS) and adapts accordingly
      > Trying to use is with a new canon SL3
      I have an SL3, but haven't tried the NTG with it yet (too many other options to play with over the last few days since it arrived)

    The two are very similar. Now I have a question. Which do you prefer: VideoMic NTG or Rode VideoMic pro +?

      Rode VideoMicro is a good place to start at $60

    • @PeterAlanJohnson
      @PeterAlanJohnson Před 4 lety

      @@switchunboxing I considered doing that, but decided i'd just end up buying the NTG later, so I saved (HA!) myself $60 by going large in the first place.
      I had wondered if I would need a Videomicro when shooting with my smartphone, but I don't think that is the case, as the NTG is light and short enough for it not to matter when you stick the phone in a cheap cage.

    If you have bmpcc4k you don't really need safety channel feature. It can be set in camera.

    What is the maximum distance you can be from each mic and still get decent audio? I’m presenting in front of a white board about 3-5 feet away from camera so want to make sure i can still be heard clearly. If not ill go with a lapel mic instead. Thanks

      Use a lav mic. Deity has a great one for US$ 49.00.

    *SIR WHICH L BRACKET DID YOU USE TO MOUNT THE MICROPHONE? I noticed that you camera has flip upwards not sidewards.*

    • @PeterAlanJohnson
      @PeterAlanJohnson Před 4 lety

      I think both mics allow you to slide the mount forwards or backwards in the shoe, so it doesn't foul a flip-up display, or get into your shot with a wide lens. Certainly the Rode does that.

I am a new birdy, as new as you can think of, I am just curious because I see some of youtubers use that style and they sound crisp, but i dont see anything in like that in this channel. or could be I searched it wrong. Thanks!

    The RODE feature where it has the -20 Db is super useful for me who will be using it to record in instances where there will be loud fans cheering and yelling.

      Just a quick note you can also use rode ntg on your computer with its usb c to record on pc. And also to live stream. You can also plug your headphones on the side of the microphone to monitor your audio.

      Yeah, that is a massive advantage- thats what swung it for me as I wasn't intending to spend so much on a video mic, but I'm glad I did and the NTG works great as a USB podcast or voiceover mic, and even suspended overhead for Zoom calls.
