Tesla Model Y: 10 Facts You Probably Didn't Know

  • The Tesla Model Y is the result of nearly 17 years of automotive innovation. This practical crossover is the most technologically advanced vehicle ever built by Tesla Motors, and is arguably the most sophisticated vehicle in its price range in the entire world. The perfect choice for those who want to drive a spacious, impressively intelligent, extremely safe electric car but want a bit more room than the model 3 sedan.

    Thanks to Sandy Munro for the Tesla Model Y vehicle teardown:
    munrolive.com/
    The Tesla Model Y performance model, equipped with all wheel drive dual independent motors has a range of 315 miles, a top speed of 145 MPH, and accelerates from 0-60 MPH in 3.5 seconds.
    7.1 inches taller than the universally acclaimed and best selling Model 3, the model Y is built on the same platform and contains approximately 70% of the parts you can find on its smaller, yet older, brother. Only a couple of inches longer and almost 3 inches wider, Tesla’s new poster child is a compact crossover utility vehicle that looks very similar to the Model 3. The Model Y’s hatchback design is the main differentiator from the traditional trunked sedan of the model 3 .
    Even though the front induction motor of the model Y looks identical to the one in the Model 3 because the external housing has the same exact design, what’s inside is different. And, as the famed auto engineer Sandy Munro found out, there have been some manufacturing efficiencies added. The expensive copper rotor has been replaced by a cast-in-place aluminum assembly that reduces the overall cost of production, but maintains the functionality of the motor. We know that the performance version of the model Y uses the same motor configuration as the Model 3, with a more efficient permanent magnet motor in the back, and an induction unit up front.
    The falcon wing door design was patented by the Mercedes-Benz in 1952 for the 300SL race car but in the EV universe we now associate it with the Tesla Model X SUV. Tesla engineers decided to go for the regular outwards opening doors on the Tesla Model Y.
    The Tesla Model Y is the first Tesla vehicle to use a heat pump for interior cabin heating and cooling, which can improve vehicle efficiency compared to Tesla’s previous models that use electrical resistance to keep the car’s interior warm and toasty. A Heat Pump is a device that transfers thermal energy, and can be used for heating, or in reverse for air conditioning.
    Potentially one of thee most advanced pieces of new engineering in the vehicle, the Model Y’s heat pump contains a motorized “octovalve” that distributes coolant to all of the vehicles components.
    With the rear seats completely folded down flat, the model Y offers 68 cubic feet of storage space, a whooping jump from the 15 cubic feet of the Model 3.
    The Model Y’s underbody has a revolutionary two-piece casting and by the end of the year, Musk said that they intend to make the entire underbody out of one single part. This ambitious project is the only one of its kind because “There is no casting of the size and complexity that has ever been done before.”, as Elon stated. To put it into context, the Model 3’s underbody is made out of 70 different metal parts welded together.
    On the Model Y interior, there is a beautifully aesthetic single pane glass roof that ties together seamlessly with its minimalist interior. On the Model 3 we experienced a view partially obstructed by a center brace.
    Seeing the popularity of aftermarket companies that have created dedicated kits to cover the chrome accents on other Teslas, namely the Model 3, Model S and Model X, the designers thought it would be a cool look to include the “chrome delete” as a standard feature of the Model Y delivery. Therefore, everything from the pillar trim, side mirrors, door handles, blinkers and a few other accents are painted in matte black for a sleek, minimalist appearance.
    As Sandy Munro discovered in some of his legendary “car dismembering” videos, the frame of the Model Y is much more solid than the one present in the Model 3 that, if you were paying attention, already scored “perfect” on the IIHS’s safety tests. The main feature that stood out (literally) was a so called “tusk” that is intended to absorb all the shock from a possible front crash and distribute it evenly throughout the body of the vehicle.
    Tesla CEO Elon Musk predicts that the new Model Y will become the best-selling product ever, and he might be right. Jay Leno likes it too!
    There are four powertrains for the Model Y: Standard Range, Long Range, Long Range with Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive, and Performance. The Model Y will offer optional third-row seats for a seven-passenger seating capacity.

      It isn't 'haters' who have been complaining about Tesla defects. It's buyers. And what's not to believe? The defects were there. The good news is Tesla seems to have gotten past that problem. My brother-in-law's new Y was delivered last week with no defects.
      Your fanboy attitude does nothing but detract from Tesla's reputation. It's great to love Tesla's products -- I do! You can even go ahead and love Musk and the company for all I care -- I don't. Both have more defects than their early cars. But denying problems that really exist, and inventing conspiracy theories or blaming 'haters' just leads reasonable people to ignore you and others who love their Tesla cars.
      Be a fan, not a fanboy.

    I received my Model Y about a month ago and I am amazed by the vehicle.
    I have been driving an Audi Q 5 for several years and I thought it the best vehicle I have ever had but the Model Y is truly amazing. It was delivered without any hiccups or at least very few, A delay in getting my factory installed hitch.
    If I have any complaints it would be the overview of the vehicle for an old dude who needs more time to absorb the control systems. It would be grand for Tesla to have some pre buy classes, sorta like pre natal classes expectant first parents LOL. It is a brand new baby for sure for most of us.

Last summer took a 9,000 mile trip around US (San Diego - Texas - Saint Louis - Niagara Falls - South Dakota - Oregon Coast - Down to San Diego) with Model 3. This summer wanted to do the same but do the Canadian highway back (Virus screwed that up) Well maybe next year with Model Y. Tesla Super Charge network was great. Drove 80%-90% on Autopilot. Moved from a Model 3 to a All Wheel Drive, Dual Motor, Pearl White Model Y.
    Important note:
    Tesla Palm Springs, CA offered me $31k for my Model 3. I thought that to be low, considering only 2700 miles. So I took it to CarMax in Riverside, CA for an estimate. $36k! I sold it there.
    Model Y problems:
    I’m also having problems with the hatch back. It doesn’t release when handle is pressed and rubs on the right side when raised. This friction is why the handle won’t release and has to be manually raised.
    I have to waste time taking it in to be fixed. Very expensive car to have to do this.

      Ive talked to well off relatives - some of their friends complain about their tesla, batteries in the winter/heat, non-aligned door panels, and some other ideosyncracies: other get desuaded from buying the cars that way.

      Raph Ael if you’re spending more money on it and. or buying it for the over the air updates and driving capabilities as well as reducing your carbon footprint also even with not the best build quality theyre still the safest cars on the road so when you add all that up, the cars not being perfect isn’t that bad because i’m sure if you go back to the 1900’s tons of cars were messed up by factories that’s why they have a recall system for actual issues that everyone would have to/could face. so anyone who would buy this car and complain about anything that’s vain such as a panel being a half a millimeter too far from the one next to it, should buy a Mercedes or Porsche and be happy with themselves it’s really that simple, they act like the build quality issues aren’t well known😂.

    Got ours a month ago and love it. Just a few hiccups though. Summon function the car freaked out and needed a firmware fix that took a week at Tesla to. Figure out. Now we have a A/C issue in the cabin and on the display. Not cooling inside and says it’s 145 degrees outside. Need to get this straightened out. Big fan of the vehicle here and know there will be some bugs to work out with software or and firmware updates.
    Wish there was a 50 mile battery backup unit as an accessory that was available just in case....

    We really love our Y. We have three kids and a rear facing baby. Fitting her in behind the driver is tricky. When she's able to be forward facing the car seat situation will be much better. Really wish Tesla made a van. Till then we will appreciate what we have.

    I received my Blue LR AWD Model Y at the end of April this year and traded my Black Model 3 for it.... I love the car-that said, I am disappointed in finish work panel gaps, recessed door handles, glitchy driver window which has been repaired already.. I just feel that the “luxury” feel is impeded when you notice some of the finish work..
    I still enjoy it though.

    I've had my Y for 4 weeks and I love it! It seems that I keep finding all kinds of great things about it each day. It has made my having to sell my 2014 S a lot easier. I would add that it did make me very sad to have to sell my S but my wife said I couldn't keep both. I tried the argument that Jay Leno didn't have to sell his S when he got a Y but her response was, "but we don't have his garage!" So much for keeping them both!! I sold my S through Carvana. They offered me $10,000 more than Tesla was willing to offer. But I digress. Thanks again Elon for the great innovations!!

      I am giving up my BMW X4 M with HUD. I LOVE the HUD, not just for driving but also selecting who to call, what music to play, all by rolling my thumb on steering wheel and seeing it in my direct line of vision without taking eyes off road. Its not just for GPS directions. Also for constant real time display of speed im going at and what speed limit is where im at. I love Tesla, had model S before but HUD is something they should have included

    I'd like to see the frunk auto close and latch. it seems that the Model 3 front hood can be damaged if one attempts to close it incorrectly. An automatically closing and latching front hood on the Y would be a worthwhile improvement, I think.

    Received my model Y on 12/25/2020, thank you, God. I also bought the model 3 last year. The only issue is, the back seats need to be lighter or electrically fold up. It's kind of stressful for seniors (72 years old).

  • @darthstemcell
    @darthstemcell Před 4 lety +4

    It is difficult to see out of the rear with the rear view mirror. The back passenger seats are bad the passengers hit their heads on the cross bar. You can't fit 3 adults across nicely despite extra width and we haven't seen the last row yet. Doubt that fits 3 adults either. To do it just extend the slope back a bit.

    • @israndy
      @israndy Před 3 lety

      I bet the 7 seater allows the middle row to slide back and forth, that will keep passengers from touching the crossbar but you can also just not recline all the way.

    • @darthstemcell
      @darthstemcell Před 3 lety
