My middle school jazz band is playing this for a competition and I’m gonna have the honor of playing the solo great piece.
Edit:They gave me a quarter of the solo and gave the rest to a trumpet because I played a solo on every one of our songs which kinda is t true

Anyone who has performed this peice: was alto sax 1 all of the altos ones or was it a soloist or was it some other situation?

There should only ever be a single Alto 1 player in a big band, as it is their resposibility to dictate the articulation, dynamics, and other nuances to the rest of the section to create a coheasive section. If there are two players on the part, it becomes impossible for the other parts (Alto 2, Tenor 1/2, and Baritone) to match the lead Alto's style as there are now two competing interpretations.
The only parts that can somewhat benefit from an extra player are Alto 2 and Tenor 2, as in school bands, these are often have weaker players assigned to them despite often being technically the most challenging. Any more than 7 sax players will result in the outer players being too far from the lead Alto player (who should be sat in the middle of the section) to hear the nuances clearly.
In this chart however, due to the Lead alto being off in their own, the responsibility for leading the section falls on the 2nd Alto, so there can only be one player on that part for the reasons above.
