Professional Editions for Jazz Ensemble - Grade 5
Composed by Yoko Kanno for the Japanese anime television series Cowboy Bebop, the tune Tank! has taken on a life of its own. John Wasson's driving Latin funk version was written for his Strata Big Band and recorded on the album Chronicles. It features the quirky melody, sizzling brass punches, solo space for alto sax, and shows off every section of the band. A real screamer!

It makes me so happy when people know how to write for bass bone
Arranger is a trombone player
Based bass bone part
Agreed
Bass bone part is difficult but I love that it is actually something
YES ❤
Damn that 1st trumpet part is fire
Very strong lead player on this recording.
Great stuff!! It looks so much fun to play (with much woodshedding to do!)
Playing lead on it in my high schools jazz band😃 struggling to say the least
Yes
@@braydengray520 yo my friend is playing lead on it and he can play it without breaking a sweat. The crazy thing is he's been playing for only 6 years.
I was expecting to be disappointed, but this arrangement is great! Keep ‘em coming
excellent arrangement.
john wasson doesn’t disappoint
This arranger is actually one of my professors! He’s amazing!
Fancy meeting you on a meme chart
@@AustinHutsonMusic Wicked!
This is awesome! I love how this arrangement creates its own identity with the double-time swing portion at 3:00, rather than be a copy+paste of the original.
Yeah, it fits really well!
it’s not double time but i know what you mean
@@Enderrock424 it is double-time tho? i mean personally i was counting twice as fast (ride cymbal) but it might just be a perception thing.
@@kuick6814 it’s just the feel. the time is the same
@@Enderrock424 tbf the bassline does go to walking 8ths, so it is basically double time
Fun fact, this is the same guy that arranged the whiplash version of Caravan, which really makes sense since you can very much hear the Seatbelts influence throughout said arrangment. Incredible work.
yeah but this really doesn't capture the groove of the original
@@prodpoob I think it does a pretty good job
Jesus Christ that alto solo is one of three greatest I’ve ever heard
its also not being played on an alto sax
@@ldbonq look up the Strata band playing Tank! 😂 the guy soloing is on an alto sax, so I don’t know where the hell you got your info from
@@hughjayn1s the solo in the video is being played on a tenor
@@ldbonq the Strata band’s playing of Tank! is exactly the music being played in the video right now 😂 alto 1 is the one with the solo section, and you can clearly tell it’s an alto playing
@@hughjayn1s okay man jeez it sounded like a tenor to me. i formally apologize for being wrong about something on the internet that matters a whole bunch to you and recognize that you are obviously much smarter, cooler, and better at music than I could ever possibly hope to be
as a sax player, i can approve that the sax solo is VERY difficult
I love looking at the first trumpet part and crying because of how high the notes are.
Kid named first trombone:
yeah, i reckon this is the right way to arrange Tank. it clearly establishes it's own identity while remaining faithful to the style as well as melodic and harmonic material of the original. wasson has some good charts
I’m not big into anime, but as a jazz enthusiast this is fantastic!
This is a sick ass arrangement of Tank dude. Absolutely loved the double time swing section. Obviously the alto solo was no Masato Honda but nonetheless was still superb.
Alto solo is better imo, more jazz language, but the ending part of the original arrangement was way better
Was the original a soprano sax?
@@stevemattero1471 no sir it was also an alto sax, Masato just had a nasty altissimo range.
@@abeahmed2581 I mean, it's basically a 12-bar blues song arranged for a jazz band in the first place, so it makes sense that the original alto solo plays more like a blues guitar solo. This is a much jazzier arrangement, so the jazzier solo fits well here.
I was in Wasson's band and I loved playing this song!!!
That’s amazing! What instrument did you play?
that alto solo went so hard 🔥🔥🔥
2:46 made my jaw drop the first time I heard it. Coolest sax lick I have ever heard.
This is a really good arrangement one of the first I’ve ever seen. I’m glad that now many more jazz bands across the world can play Tank
Three, two, one. Let’s jam.
I was expecting this to be incredibly cringy, but honestly a really killer arrangement that doesn’t lose any of the craziness of the original chart. Lead trumpet parts are pretty much all there in the same octave but just broken up in different parts of the chart. I’m not sure I’d choose to play this when the original quite frankly is easier given the length component with all of the hardest lead parts still in there, but I love it all the same.
I’ve played the original twice with two different schools, first time brought in a guest artist to play lead, and second time doubled lead with one of my students who had the needed a flats and g’s so I know this lead part fairly well.
WOW!!! I was expecting to hate it, but this genuinely surprised me! That double-time section was fire!
Its so wierd to hear this song played so cleanly!
Well done on the arrangement!
This is 100x better than I was expecting
I can tell you this is an awesome arrangement and I’m currently playing it it’s really hard but also really really fun!!!!!
My friend found this pretty quickly and convinced our band director to let our jazz band play this! I'm lead trumpet on it and wow there are a lot of high notes
Dawg good luck💀
we are playing this piece for jazz band at my school and it was such a tough piece at first and i thought i could never play it but now its super fun and im getting better at it every time
Holy crap, I was very pleasantly surprised with this arrangement, I’d really like to try this one out!
THIS IS SO GOOD
comment about the extreme range in the trumpets. give me my likes now.
Time to beg my band director to buy this
Makes me want to play the trumpet again!
This is bad ass to play along with my friends when we party.
Thanks for posting cat.
I love the horn quotes from GET IT ON! from CHASE, NICE!
Nicely done sir
Played this in jazz band last year by far my favourite song we’ve ever done!
I’ve been waiting so long for this, thank you so much!! 🔥🔥🔥
Sax solo es increíble
the amount of children i would conceive in order to play this someday
very cool
This some heat
Amazing arrangement!
This was probably on my recommended because I’ve watched so many videos of Blue Devils’ 2022 show
This got me hype and pumped as hell
Wow, really great arrangement!
holy crap, john wasson is a godsend because this is absolutely amazing
I've probably only heard of Cowboy Bebop 3 times in my life but this is amazing
Sounded pretty good! I like that
Amazing arrangement and playing!
I actually really like this arrangement
3, 2, 1, let's jam!
Superb!
I love it
THIS IS THE AUDITION FOR MY HIGHSCHOOLS JAZZ 1 (Best jazz band)
Noice! Love it
The trumpets missed a note at the beginning.
*um som muito agradável*
GOD. You know the drill. Time to beg the band director to play this piece 😭🙏
That bongo pattern though...
The boss music
@halleonardjazzensemble is there any way to get the audio version of this without the alto sax 1 solos to practice??
By brothers high school jazz band just performed this an dot was great!
HECK YEAH THIS IS AWESOME!!!!
I’m going to try and convince my jazz band director to let us play this
In my schools swing band we are doing a easier version of it but i still get to do a crazy sax solo
This was better then I was expecting
cant wait for the first “playing trumpet 1” on this
This, this is art.
bravo!
Will the saxophones in my schools jazz band kill me for even suggesting this song. Maybe. Will I still be trying yes.
See you, space cowboy.
oh how i wish to do this at some point
We’re playing this in jazz band. It’s pretty hard for us, but I think we’ll get it in time.
Eyes popped when I saw this in my recommended
Damn
day 2 of asking what screen recording software yall use, it looks good and im trynna record a jazz piece
my ears are blessed
This is better than what I imagined, I thought they were gonna ruin Tank, but this is actually unique in a good way.
How is this so damn good?! Hal Leonard is normally unremarkable, especially their jazz stuff, but this is awesome!
Have you listened to Spain yet
@@franciscor3758 Yeah, I did. It’s another good one
I will say for the effect of the original track for the bass and the guitar to really accent and dig into 1 and 3. It makes it groove a lot harder
YES!!!!!
Is there any chance that someone could transpose that piano solo.
I play trumpet and this looks hella hard
dang that was good
Oh wow
Can somebody transcribe the end solo for me please?🙏🏽
the only thing i can dog on, is the drum groove, it can be way more spicy than that, the recording of the drum itself might be the problem too
2:56
Does anyone have to transcription of the sax solo?
It’s way too complex to get an absolute and good score of it. Also, it enters high altissimo range and some of the notes are hard to know which is which
Man...they don't make anime songs now like they do back in the days. Good stuff!
Do baccano anime opening please
Blue Devils '22 #20
Wow, an arrangement that manages to keep the juice from the original
Blueeeedevillsss
Honestly, pretty good but could've been better in my opinion
I think the part that really grinded my gears was right before the solo break, the horns don't end on the E7 chord, which kind of felt a little yassified to me
Although it could just be the upper register C's
Idk, I feel like it would sound better with only the Low C's, or none at all
Despite your non-ironic use of the word “yassified”, I actually agree this this
@@sizableyeet lol absolutely ironic
Although what about your use of yeet lol?
@@francoomarlopezlopez you have my mother’s last name and father’s last name in your full name, just thought you should know
Woodlands Hs 2022!
Hey I’m playing that
Im currently 1st alto in our schools jazz band, how do people make explosive solos like that? Is it just running through a bunch of different chords and modes?
Making explosive solos is a mixture of multiple techniques. Cycling through the appropriate arpeggios and modes/scales (with attention to chord tones) with melodic intent is a part of it, but using chromatic notes and licks (whether they be other people's licks, or better, your own) is also a large part of it, too. There are other techniques out there like triad pairs, playing outside etc..., but learning modes/scales, arpeggios, chromatics and licks is more than enough for an epic solo.
The most important part is hours and hours of practice improvising. Just improvising over an endless loop of a song you intend to improv over will eventually help your improvisation over time. Just don't get stuck in improvisation habits and break them quickly if you catch yourself doing it.
When you do practice improvising, it is very important that you try new things out all the time (preferably every time). Make a mental note of things that work and things that don't work so you can reuse and build upon the most effective licks and motifs and then use them in performances.
Another thing that is worthwhile doing is transcribing other people's solos (Miles Davis and Charlie Parker solos are popular ones to transcribe.) Once you've done that, analyse what they are doing and, more importantly, why they are doing it, to learn from them. It's almost like getting a lesson in improvisation from them. It's a lot of hard work, but you will be learning from the best.
@@emilyrockett1774 thank you so much! I will apply this knowledge.
@@recastle8051 adding on to what Emily said with transcribing, although it maybe a difficult task, you can also try transcribing this solo and other solo recordings of Tank, like the original recording, the virtual recording by SEALBELTS, the jazz band that played in the original cover of tank, Dave Pollack's cover, and more. this can make the process of creating your solo easier because of you can copy paste licks from their solo to yours and gain inspiration on how to create lines that fit over the changes.
It's even in jazz font
Can u do a transcription of blue devils tank
My Little Suede Cowboy Boots.
I wonder why this was uploaded
Great arrangement - unlike the original - this one is almost playable! ;D
Ok Hal Leonard pop off
