Rhapsody in Blue
By George Gershwin / arr. Gordon Goodwin
Item: 00-33370
Series: Gordon Goodwin Series
Category: Jazz Ensemble
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 6 (Professional / Very Advanced)
This is a tour-de-force, GRAMMY® Award-winning arrangement by Gordon Goodwin of Gershwin's masterpiece. The sax doubles call for piccolo (alto 1), clarinet/flute (alto 2) and bass clarinet (bari). The second alto part has the well-known clarinet solo. This chart has it all---the thematic material, swing, key changes, solo space for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet, and trombone; and lead trumpet range is to written high F. The percussion part calls for mallets and timpani. Overall, a grasp of both jazz and classical concepts will make this chart stand apart from anything else. As recorded by the Big Phat Band. (2:20)

Texas band kids: yeah I played this in 6th grade but like twice as fast it was super easy

As a Texas band kid, I can admit that I played this in 6th grade but like twice as fast it was super easy

@@DanielReyes-lg4eo փ
We’re actually playing this in my HS jazz band lol
Bars 56 to 61 are killer for saxes. The next time a high school jazz band plays that correctly will be the first time.
sorry , but that was really dirty
@yami yeager Yeah, they played that set twice, one after the other, (evident when the 1st trumpet passes out at one point,) and the 1st was a bit cleaner. That was the year they won a competition at Berklee. I'm a member this year, and unfortunately it's taken a turn for the worse what with our school switching schedules to a non jazz friendly one as it were. Still good tho.
@Nathaniel McVeigh I hope the bass has fixed his left hand by now

I can imagine playing this would be like playing in a musical, those damn key signatures, high tempos and constant tempo and feel changes...
as i have played in two musicals. y e s,
Holy Shit...that is some chart.
Me on the first page: this doesn't look that hard actually
Page turn: so you have chosen... *death.*
I remember listening to this before hearing the original and not being able to get through the first minute. Several months later I came back to find this as a masterpiece. Guess my taste in music has changed.
Yeah I play a lot of classical piano and I thought this song sucked but I got tricked into joining the jazz band at my school and now I think it's actually good
@@loganmoon380 Could I recommend you a couple great charts. This is more of a fake jazz style I'm not going to lie.
Grade 6? Wow didn't know it could get that high...
ikr
Shwarzmen Duddlehaeven That's not even the highest the highest is 7
example please, Devin
Ok like grades 4-5 is like high school level music and grades 6-7 is like college level music. Random guy who stole all of Your doritos
Devin Salazar I meant like an example of a garden 7 piece lol. like a chart name.
Listening on 2x makes it crack city in blue
Python Kick this is the gateway to hell
this is the only genuinely funny comment I’ve seen on one of these videos
doctor: you have 7 minutes and 41 seconds left to live
me:
What you gonna do with the extra second?
Penguilion appreciate the arrangement
It'll take me 7 minutes and 41 seconds to choose a song
2:25 sounds like Mario Kart music
The beginning drum run at 2:18 sounds similar to the drum run in Mario Kart 8's Title theme. A call and response technique is used here, played by trumpets and responded by the saxes. This is rather common in many of Nintendo's OST. Also, the major key also helps it stay light and airy, like Nintendo's OST. But then again, that is just my take...
Sounds exactly like delfino square
No, Mario Kart music sounds like George Gershwin (as interpreted by Gordon Goodwin).
This goes in so many directions and I love it

3:29 THE LICK!!!

I remember seeing this in concert, clairnet solo was killer... incredible that this is charted by Alfred
Holy mother of trumpet solo
The trombone solo was so clean 👌🏽
Honestly the band kid/ music maker faction of CZcams is one of the best!! Love y’all
That it works so well in this format proves that, at its core, it is jazz,
Absolutely freaking epic
That trombone! So lush!
That bass bone is godly
really amazing.......unbelievable.......so good........heaven level........top 10.........
I’m in love
That bass bone part 🔥🔥🔥
I play the Bass Trombone in Jazz. I gotta play this someday.
Amazing!
Me and the other Clarinets: ~*sweats nervously*~
Sooooooooooooooooooooooo true 😂😂😂😂😂
The solo itself isnt actually that hard once you learn how to do a glissando. It's actually super fun.
OMG SAME! My band is really tiny (the high school concert band has 7 people, and the jazz band has 10) so whenever I get it wrong it's super obvious. (I play b flat clarinet, bass clarinet, and trombone, and a range of bari to soprano in vocals btw; whichever is most need in the song we're playing).
the solo really isnt that bad, I know if my band did this piece I would be put on alto 2, even though im primarily a bari player on sax. My primary is clarinet and I also play flute which is all required for this.
I wish I could play this good!! Maybe one day though.
This is sooooo cool, Thanks very much!!
I love this song
very nice arrangement!!
The ballad omg
4:02 and on has honestly the greatest solo backgrounds
wtf are these key signatures

Good god, Gordon Goodwin is a mad scientist
I'm able to play the high trumpet solo on my clarinet and I'm gonna try to learn it on trumpet but wow (5:32) this is an amazing piece
8-BitPlayz I can play it but it’s very much hitting the top of my range
that note at 0:37 gets me every time
I'm glad its so understanding
Can you upload some more Big phat band scores please
Trumpet one is beautiful 😭
I really hope that I’ll be able perform this song one day 🥺
Which part
@@bruhmomenthdr7575 I play Bari sax. :)
That ain’t no alto that’s a clarinet
Kensword fam what instrument do you see in the parentheses under alto 1
Jay Justo piccolo
Jay Justo mayonnaise
Kensword the saxes usually switch to clarinet or flute in jazz if there is a part of the song that has that kind of note, like a bari sax one time at a concert playing a bass clarinet solo
@@jayjusto9580 alto 2
I would love to master this song. I would love to play Alto 2 so I could play that clarinet solo.

Bari sax could be an actual bari sax part ya know
what do you mean?
Definitely. For god sakes it’s part of the sax section. I don’t understand arrangers who give bari nothing parts
justin pfeiff Because its not really like a sax. You don’t see bari’s in these sax-melodies cause they’re not like saxes really, they fit better with the bones
This is FAR from the worst bari part
@@brandonm7952 bari is kinda rough to write for. as a bari player and arranger, this is really evident; it's the lowest member of the sax family so a lot of times when altos and tenors are playing a melody, it's too high for the bari to play. bari fills the role of a 5th trombone quite a bit, as it blends well (especially in the mid-low register) with bones, especially when there isn't a bass bone present (unlike this piece.) it's just an awkward instrument to write for a lot of the time
Sounds more like a Coltrane piece instead of a band arrangement in the middle....
What are you on about? That's a sax improv section, so effing what?
I could probably play the fourth trumpet part...yay me👍😢
I've finally learned how to play the glissando 😭 it took me 3 months
I'm on month 1 so hopefully I'll get it soon, congrats dude
not to brag but it took me like 3 hours
Howwwwwww
you just gotta roll your finger off the hole then lift it slowly off the ring and bam you have the glissando to rhapsody in blue
@@zenixrl_ me too😂😂 probably like 1 tho

Can someone transcribe the clarinet solo for flute

i wish i was that good of a trumpet player
Oh my gosh! So many sharps for alto sax. 6 sharps! 0_0

it’s honestly not that bad, i’m a tenor player but i play alto

Braden Hoeffner wym 9 huh... double sharps?
Come on, this is really easy to play... as an audio file. Nope, not possible to play on an instrument unless many days or months of practice. (Or you could be a Jazz Legend and be able to sight read the whole thing)

Bluejay0608 Bruh it ain't that hard lmao
"many days" as in 2920 days (8 years)
Bluejay0608 eh, the top jazz pros could probably learn it in like two weeks, but I'm talking about players in the high jazz orchestras
I wonder if this is where Scott Watson got inspiration from for the saxaphone part of Secret Agent Sugar Plum
7:00 ends with a bang
Guy Smiley the last chord when it’s just the trumpets and altos before the trombones come in is godly

The clarinet that the 2nd Alto doubles as is in Eb right?

How come at measures 149 - 166, the bari sax's and alto sax’s keys is written in flats, while everyone else's is written in sharps?
it would be too many sharps for them
7 sharps

Had to play the clarinet part on Soprano sax, then swap to my alto… this song was insane to play… felt like musical pit band all over again
My band director gave us this music during the summer and we've been working on it since for our spring concert, its not that we don't know the notes its just with all the tempo changes and key changes and stuff that makes it so hard
