I'm currently working at a Big4 firm (at the advisory department, performing FDD analysis) and I have decided to quit at the end of the month...I'm 21, I don't want to live my life this way...we don't live just to work, our job provides us the means ($$$) to eventually do all the other things that we enjoy. And of course we need to find a job that we actually like since it consumes approximately 1/3 of our time...we have alternative options, let's not stay in a job that makes us feel unhappy and miss all of the other beautiful things in this life!

      no don't do that.
your route to freedom is working hard and saving up now and compounding your wealth.
it buys you your freedom down the line.
its just that the monetary system now has been so corrupted
that hard work is not rewarded but in fact cheated
while crooks with access to cronies up top get to offload their losses and steal the gains from the hardworking.

Leaving consulting is the best decision I have made. Putting 90+ hours a week in an impossible project with a $30 million contract on the line while repeatedly being told it's not enough was very draining. I woke up at 5 AM and worked through 1 AM living off of vending machine food and 4 hours of sleep. I was told on a number of occasions to implement features that would have been 8 or 13 user story points the very NEXT morning ready for UAT. When I explained that it's not possible or it won't be good on release I get the whole "non-negotiable" spiel. The concerns I expressed daily of not having enough developers to meet go-live requirements in time were ignored. I knew missing go-live date would extend the nightmare for another 6 months. I was told "it was a very important project and to just stick it out". Just one example of toxicity out of many: I jumped in the shower at 7 AM and missed an impromptu call from the PM by 5 minutes. I was chewed out in front of everyone.

Don't you just love the life at a Big4.
No matter what you do and how hard you work, they'll find ways to shaft their employees.
Meritocracy does not exist, and your performance is based on your ability to game the politics with the upper management.
Honestly, the prestige of working at a Big4 has become such a marketing shill through the recruiting events.
There are better opportunities outside, and hoping more people realizes this before selling themselves short to these firms.

Currently working at Deloitte, and I am lucky enough to be remote. It really depends on the type of team you are apart of, and your manager. I definitely agree with the fights involving clients, but it definitely comes with the territory. Deloitte does pay well, and you really control your career to a certain degree. As for long hours, it all depends on the contract you are on. Also, yes there will be some fake people, but that’s at any job. People are scared of getting fired for being themselves so everyone puts on a front.

Great video. My experiences working at Deloitte was eerily the same as yours. Even all the "perks" are garbage like parties as they were really thinly guised networking events where you couldn't be yourself and everyone ended up talking about work anywhere since they literally had no life out of it. The biggest common misconception about travel was you get to travel to cool places, but the reality is you rarely get to choose and you are working so much, you don't even get to enjoy the city anyway. I generally travelled in the Midwest US and places like Collegeville, PA and Bartlesville, OK. Everyone that was manager/ senior manager's I met looked like dead inside as they had internal sales pressure from the PPMD's and external pressure from their client counterpart that sponsored the project. The quality of life there was so dependent on the project and team as well as PPMD support.
Unfortunately for me, I got laid off from Deloitte due to Covid and still not sure if it's a blessing in disguise as I'm still currently looking for a job and trying to figure out what I actually want to do.

I worked in the same building that Deloitte was in and there’s a coffee shop at the bottom floor that everyone goes to. The Deloitte people always looked stressed or beat down and i’ve seen a lot of them treat the baristas like garbage or they dump their emotions on them after being asked, “how was your day”. I’m like waiting for my coffee and witnessing these micro-car crashes that are sad Deloitte consultants. Their collective rude or depressing behavior towards non-Deloitte people is telling of how toxic their workplace is but that’s just what i drew from my observations and from former Deloitte employees that rage quit in the hallway by the elevators.

Interesting. I've been a data analytics manager at the Big 4 and a smaller boutique firm too. And I haven't had a hugely negative opinion or experience. But it has never really felt like a career, just a job. And analytics usually falls under FDD and finance just doesn't resonate with me at all. I'm passionate about marketing. But still haven't found an avenue that can turn that passion into a career that pays enough for my cost of living comfortably. So I need to sustain this for a few more years because I can't imagine industry ever paying as much as consulting. Pay off a bunch of shit, rack up a bunch of savings and retirement, and pursue my own entrepreneurial endeavor like you!

    • @EuniceLo
      @EuniceLo  Pƙed 3 lety +1

Yeah, like I mentioned in the video some people don’t have the same experience it depends on the team and partner you have.
As for marketing analytics there’s quite a lot of opportunities for that as I did that too. You can find equally salary competitive salary for marketing analytics at large marketing agencies as they have data departments too. A lot of my friends in industry actually earn more than we did in big 4 and have a better work life balance too so that you have time to continue your side hustles.
So if you have a chance I would encourage you to look into marketing agencies and large corps with a marketing team and they will have the marketing analytics job you’re looking for

    Any advice?

    • @EuniceLo
      @EuniceLo  Pƙed 3 lety +2

I would say consulting in general is usually like this because the overall culture & compensation structure is based on utilization rates (how many hours you can bill working on a project) and usually the staff doing the job have little guidance & say in how much time you have to do work so they may tell a client it takes 4 weeks for 40hrs/week just to meet budgets and it actually takes much longer than that. Usually a 40 hr week means a 60-80 hr if not scoped properly or there is scope creep to make the client super happy. Because of this nature it’s hard to avoid unless budgeted hours and actual effort matches, you have proper guidance/ppl, upper management prioritizes team culture & is a good leader.
As for other companies, I would say depends which kind. Any you’re thinking in particular?

It’s definitely possible there are moms in consulting at all levels but you will have to spend a lot of time at work too so usually your partner will have take more of the parenting duties and you’ll have to find ways to balance both. Lots of people sign off to pickup their kids and then sign back on later at night to finish the rest. I think it also depends on your level as well because if you are a partner it’s usually more about sales and you get to choose when meetings take place.

my take based on working in consulting for 7 years.
pros; you get great exposure to many different companies / sectors. you learn and develop lots of skills including analysis and dealing with clients.
cons; its a bit of a pyramid scheme, where you are told that if you work to death, sacrifice personal life, in some instances (tell the small lies to win bids), and put up with some of the toxic environment with backstabbing colleagues, favouritism (its run by partners, and the partners are like little kings and queens, and if they like you you rise if not, no chance). you can feel like a sellable resource, when the resourcing teams try and sell you for jobs (they act almost like pimps i felt just selling me to jobs sometimes without even asking me).
for some its a great life, and it suits their personality and temperament. but i got tired of being sold to different clients as the 'expert' on something i knew little about, just because i was on the bench. i also got tired of being under pressure to deliver to unexpected deadlines that the partner had promised, working with lots of juniors who were from disparate backgrounds, emotional states, training and personal goals, to deliver something that was of high quality. sometimes there was no respect from the juniors to those below partners, as they did not see you as important in their career growth. so if you were in the middle between grad and partner, you sometimes got no respect from those above, nor from those below. but again its is very team dependant. if you are in a good team it can really be great. but most people did not want to kill themselves to be partner, and were looking to leave and join a firm in industry as a 'head of' type role.

Past few years got placed into similar Asian Christian background. I have a bit of an opposite way into it, but also am passionate about career in data science / promoting community in data science. Also, I feel you in regards to burnout even though I am still 24.
Would you prefer a medium sized company or startup on the verge of growth vs. Big tech company? I am curious. :)

      Lol how did you burnout?
I tried all those types of companies before joining so I know at this point in my life I rather build something of my own that challenges me yet is fun too. At this age I’m more about health & happiness & freedom so though FAANG or startups would be best for a data science career it’s just not what I wanna do for another 1, 5 or 10 years. (Having your own clients is so much more fulfilling & enjoyable)
But there’s no “perfect” choice it’s just whatever you value

@@EuniceLo I think it is just not giving myself enough time to rest and relax. Also, thanks (I am trying to learn from a lot of experienced professionals to minimize errors early on). I watch a decent amount of tech CZcamsrs who share how the whole "hustle culture" is not for them. And, I agree, the end goal should always be to prioritize happiness and health because in the end, the 💰 ends up being used for this as our main goal. :)

@@EuniceLo Also, I found you on LinkedIn. I currently am doing a Data Engineering bootcamp given I have a B.S. in area of Data Science but didn't want to go for Master's program (be in more student loan debt đŸ˜„) and the field can be pretty competitive. I also saw you went the same route so that is pretty cool!

@@jameshizon4861 haha must be our Asian upbringing to want to be perfect and get those 💯 and A+ but don’t worry your 20s is meant to make mistakes and learn from them so don’t forget to be proud of what you’ve done too

@@jameshizon4861 yeah masters didn’t make sense to me cuz I had undergrad stats classes with masters students so we learned the same thing plus DS is more about applying the theory & experience so I was pretty lucky to have employers who believed in that more than a masters. The bootcamp definitely helped to understand how to apply stats theory into a DS job
