15 Year Old Blue Belt vs. 45 Year Old Purple Belt - A Narrated Jiu Jitsu Tournament Match

- This was a classic youth vs age match-up. We met in the absolute division, where our contrasting styles clashed.
This narrated roll took place in October 2017. I was a purple belt at the time.

The humility you show in the process is the biggest take away from this video. At 45 you are truly an inspiration sir
Thank you, sir!
thats one tuff kid, but he was running out of tricks at the end of it, you would have had him if ya had more time, you paced yourself better, us old guys build up momentum slowly, young guys have it out of the gate but lose it fast if they dont pace themselves, you need a rematch and for gods sake dont wait tell hes 18 lol
@@markmorenault765 Haha - Too late! This match wa from 2017, so now I'm 50 and he's 20. I don't think I'm looking for a rematch!
@@Roll_Vids right lol im 49, my brains says i can still kick ass but my body highly disagrees, that kid is gona be a beast, omg, i telll ya some of the tuffest people ive ever seen are the smaller guys, one 4' 3"guy was nicknamed maneater lol
@@markmorenault765 There are definite advantages to being that compact. A couple of the deadliest guys at our gym are built like Barney Rubble.😁
This is dope. The young man will remember this one. You did EXACTLY what you were supposed to do, make the younger generation better.
As a 45-year old that gets on the mats 5 to 6 times per week, its quite a process to get the body ready before rolling and after. Everything hurts all the time. Haha
So true. Keep rolling, sir!
Yeah i'm 47 and it sucks... I recently just tore my LCL/ACL last week...
@@cruzcontrol39 Hips are next. Then avatar body and Virtual Reality fights instead LOL
I'm 54, same here, except now I'm injured and have been over the last year with the most serious being some disc bulge and herniation problems. I can say, if/when I am able to return to the mats, I think I have to slow down. I train and roll more than the guys half my age and I think I have to start to realize my body just can't take that pace anymore. Maybe some more drilling and flow rolling in place of the intense multi-hour roll session 3 times a week.
Bruce Weis, have you ever tried to use a reverse hyper machine? It’ll fix your herniated disc problems
Technique counts for a lot. But he is one of the stronger 15 year olds I’ve seen. Great match!
Thanks!
When real JJ skilled guy easily beats a youtuber here..
I was gonna say, this is not a regular 15 year old, he looked like a 15 year old Hulk.
I believe grappling plays a big factor in this.
At 15 you’re basically as strong as you are when you’re 25 or 30,
Really cool match. Love your humility. I’m a 41 yo grappler myself. Technique is king, but youth and weight matters. If only I discovered Jiu Jitsu young. That Kimura to arm bar transition was sweet! The journey is all that matters.
Thanks for the comment! I wish I had started younger too, but I'm just pumped that I found jiu jitsu when I did. It has definitely enriched my life.
Yep. My son is 2 years in, started at 5. I hope he’ll stick with it. These kids will be killers.
@@yurisghost9107 For sure!
I want to do jiu jitsu permanently but I don’t have time because the only BJJ place close moved and now it’s too far and school gave more homework around the same time. School gets in the way of just enjoying life and I can’t wait to finish it so I have more control over my life
I’m about to turn 17, and have faced adults in comp so I had to go for the young guy😂 you did good tho, really enjoyed your breakdown and honesty. Respect
Thanks, even though you were cheering for the wrong guy... It's great that you are testing your skill in competitions. Respect right back to you!
Wow skill like that as a 15 year old is amazing! He was so clever jamming your leg to defend a triangle choke and so on. A very technical and thoughtful young guy. You sir are a great example of the martial arts in that you fight very well and still show your humanity. I enjoyed that as much as the battle. Cheers to you both.
Thanks for the kind comment!
i usually do NOT like these "narrated rolls" where people talk shit like "here i was expecting a choke to finish me because i was so tired blablbala" like the whitebelt narrating went from coral belt back to white belt after 90 years of training...
but the fact that you enjoy a good fight, no matter its outcome (see the nice foot sweep) shows what a good sport you are! subbed :)
Hey - Thanks! I've always enjoyed watching narrated rolls, and I am familiar with that obnoxious excuse-filled tone you described. I've probably used it in other videos, but I'm glad to have avoided it in this one!
Haha this is great! Lol. I’m an old dude in my 50s and haven’t rolled in years, but I remember when I was in my 30s and I would regularly roll with a very tall and lanky 15yr old blue belt that would catch me every single time we rolled. I sometimes wonder how that young fella is doing now. If he stuck with it or not. He was good. That was like 25 years ago so he would be an old fella now lol.
That's funny - If he stuck with it, he would have to deal with those pesky young athletes - What goes around comes around!
@@Roll_Vids Haha, that is true bud.
Kudos for the honesty and the video editing. Good stuff.
Thank you!
Im a 53 year old purple belt and both of you would put me to shame. Bravo gents
Thank you!
No losses, just learning.
As Chicago's oldest and grumpiest purple belt (I'm 58) I loved watching this video. I've never been able to make that wrist behind the back pass myself either.
That pass was something I had messed around with, but without much success. I have no idea why I gave it a go during a critical part of the match. I'm glad you got some entertainment from the video!
What’s your secret to jitz longevity?
Very humble commentary. That kid was really good knew the game well. You’ll get em next time 👌🏼
Great narration and I appreciate your humility as you learned a few lessons yourself. I enjoyed watching this grappling and seeing the art form for what it is. A true clean competition.
Fantastic narrative! You are helping me to learn more consciously. Thanks for making this.
As a 49 year old practitioner myself, my 'elderly ears' (well, in all honesty......only one working ear) perked up at the term "shenanigans and tom-foolery'. Love seeing a a new video from you pop up on my subscriptions. Great video as always!
Thank you, my similar-aged jiu jitsu brother! 😄
Man I was rooting for you. I wanted experience to triumph over youthful exuberance but good match. Love your editing btw
I was rooting for me too! I take consolation in the fact that I can generally hang with the 20 somethings at tournaments. It's these lightning fast phenoms that give me trouble!
As an older fella I was too! But that kid is wise beyond his years, he’s got champion written all over him
Lol he is still working on timing and giving it his all
well in a world where the fight doesnt end in 6 mins he would
@@Alda1981 would what lol if your choking your choking more time less air or blood lol...
Of she could keep your hands in theory could choke anyone out the blood will slow may take a few minutes instead of seconds
Love your analysis of the fight!!!
Love the humility. Thank you for sharing.
51 year old brown belt here. Struggle is real my friend!! I thought you did an amazing job!
Thanks! It's great to hear that there are so many guys my age still training. Far too many of my friends are slowly becoming part of a couch.
@@Roll_Vids Exactly!! U did great. Maybe more explosive feints erratic movement? At 66 I stay away from the ground as often & long as possible but I still have to act like I am willing & able. He was a strong/good opponent with I presume wrestling experience as well
@@hunterlogan2913 That’s good advice. When I watch myself on video, I wonder why I don’t do more of that stuff. It is easy to deal with a guy like me who makes a lot of slow predictable movements. It probably is a result of my tendency to train slowly and carefully. Unleashing the wild animal is something I need to work on.
@@Roll_Vids I train quite similarly! In a bout I step Out almost like split personality or don't fight unless I don't mind losing. U had more game to bring IMO than ur competitor. Worth an injury at 45 possibly at 66 ?? ?? possibly 💥😬🙄
@Hunter Logan Yes, possibly. There's risk of injury if you take it easy, too, because you can get in horrible positions and find yourself at the mercy of aggressive sub hunters. There is some kind of balance that I am looking for between "too safe" and "too crazy." The fact that you're training at 66 tells me that you have found a balance that works.
Two great athletes!! Enjoyed watching this very much.
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great narration!
One of the best commentary I've seen and heard. Well done by both athletes.
Great content, and kudos to you for posting a very instructive match even though it didn’t go in your favor this time.
Thank you. I try to always take some lessons away, and it seems like those losses provide many!
Nothing to be embarrassed. You stepped on that mat with a very tough young man.
Also that kid is jacked.
Awesome video with great voice over descriptions! Thanks!
No - Thank you!
wow! What a great roll by both! RESPECT.
Great video, my favorite one yet!! Nice set up at the end too, so close to a finish. 💪🏽
Thank you!!! 😄😄😄
Really good video. Love the sense of humor, and your grace to accept defeat. You got yourself a new suscriber. Greetings from Guatemala.
Hello from Canada! Glad you enjoyed it!
Without your narration this video would’ve been nothing for me, good video, thank you. Play through.
Awesome commentary!
Awwwh man, I'm 37 so naturally I was routing for you but we're all family and you guys looked awesome out there, felt like I was watching ADCC match subscribed👌🏿.
Nice - Thanks!
Great match and great breakdown. I recently started Jiu Jitsu in my mid 40's and injuries are tough sometimes because my mind doesn't know my body has slowed down and I don't recover like I used to till a few hours later. You did great and so did he. My son is 11 years old and has been doing Jiu Jitsu for 6 years so at 15 years old he will be a blue belt and doing it for 10 years. So I am betting this kid has 10 years in the game.
That's great that you started in your 40's - even though it can be tough on the ol' bod. It sets an excellent example for your son, and it will delay the day that he can toss you around!
Dont worry . If you keep practicing for at least 10 years you will be a 50 yo tough guy
@@vitalydmtrysvidler8023 Nope... he will be 50 yo harmed guy.
GREAT VIDEO PRODUCTION, AND AWESOME BOUT BY BOTH CHAMPS.
Good match! Enjoyed watching and your narration.
Thank you for watching!😀
Good back and forth jiujitsu and good narration. You got a like and a sub from me.
Thank you - Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m 57, been a BB for 7 years, started when I was 40. The older I get the better these kids get. I’m trying not to let it bother me, I just try to help them get better, maybe they will always remember something I showed them.
I like the idea of taking on the role of an encourager for young athletes (not during a match with me, though 😁).
@@Roll_Vids Vert true! Some of These kids have been rolling since they were 4 years old and they went thru all all youth belts. You did a great job !
I love your channel. And rolling with older guys is a humbling experience for me too.
Thank you. Us older guys know we are going to have to take a less aggressive role eventually, but we're not going out without a battle!
There is nothing more inspiring and admirable than a humble person like you. Guys like you win because of your humbleness even though you loose.
Makes me want to get into a practice. This kind of realtime problem solving and awareness is inspiring to watch.
If you haven't tried it, it's worth a trip to your local gym. Most places offer a free class -sometimes a week - to see if it's for you. People compare it to chess with your body, and I understand the comparison. I hope you give it a go!
@@Roll_Vids will definitely get there. Have some martial arts, honor guard, and ballroom background, so movement and learning new skills and drilling them is very enjoyable. Just being safe in times of uncertainty.
Really solid breakdown. The kid has talent and you did a great job, I thought you were going to get the sub at the end but great match overall.
Thanks!
Great match. Thanks for sharing
this was a great match and i love the narration!
that kimura to arm bar was legit as F, the kid was pretty squirrely and shook outta it. I was surprised he survived that sequence
I was optimistic when I isolated the arm, but my mechanics must have been a bit off. I'd like to think my technique has tightened up since then, but I'm probably slower now too. I should have started this stuff when I was a kid!
I really enjoyed your commentary on your techniques during the match. 58 and I know my place now. later.
Thanks!
WOW. This is my first time seeing any of your videos, great work! I really appreciate this on so many levels. Subscribed. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words - and for the sub. I hope you'll enjoy some of my content! 😁
Great video, you have a really awesome game and you got great skills.the youngster reminded me of BJJ LEGEND BILL(the grill) COOPER back in the late 90,s,moved like bill did and even looked like bill also
Compliments all around! Thank you! 😊
As a 41-year-old I can honestly say that I would get demolished in seconds by my 15-year-old self. And by you. So basically, I'm saying you're doing pretty damn good in my book.
Thanks!
I think you’re wrong, even if you’re older and have pain in your knees, it dosn’t mean a 15 year old you would beat you right now, you’re saying that a 15 year old is more dangerous than a full grown man?
There’s a reason why you cannot professionally compete in mma if you’re not 18, you’re still a kid at 15 and an average man is gonna make short work of any 15 year old
@@samuellavoie3894 Nope. That is not what I said. Go back and read it again.
@@keyofg2020 how old where you at your physical peak? For wrestling
Wonderful video and excellent voice over. Im 41 and I can appreciate the honesty in the description of rolling with young skilled BJJ artists. Humbling and inspiring at the same time. Keep it up and great work to the blue belt!
Thanks for the encouragement! 😁
Jesus man, come on. You're 41 not 101. You act like you're washed up and over the hill. What do you mean "humbling" ? You should be the one humbling people at only 41.
Great video and analysis. I think the understanding of what you are facing and the scope awareness is always critical to obtaining your goal. Knowing where you focus prevents scope creep.
What an awesome match and super motivating. I bet you kill it in your weight and age bracket.
Thanks! I haven't had the chance to compete with guys my age and weight since World Masters 2017. Except at my club, where there are few that trade taps with me all the time. I'm hoping to hit a couple of bigger tournaments this summer, where I can test myself against some old timers.
Sooo glad I came across this! I am 43 beginner, aching from last night's roll (with a 15 beginner, who will over take me very quickly. So flexible with unnatural pressure!)..I get a little downhearted when I see others progressing faster. I can only manage 1-2 per week (young kids ect) and often wonder if I am 'too old'. Btw you guys are both in very good shape!! Must try harder..
My advice: Do your best to forget about how everyone else is progressing. 80% of the people that show up now will probably quit in the next year or two. Keep plugging along at your own pace and you'll become a legend before you know it!
@@user-sg8kq7ii3y If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? Do you still train?
@@user-sg8kq7ii3y if he's as pessimistic as you and comes up against the absolute worst case scenario, then maybe you're right. Really unnecessary comment though.
Its crazy man I started at 25 and I feel "too old". I know 25 is "young" but years of basketball my hips and knees hurt alot, my shoulder is busted from the repetitive jump shots etc. Im 2 years in now and learnt alot, I definitely can see the shreds remaining of my youth kicking into gear but man I have alot of respect for guys who are older and start. We have a guy whos mid 40s and he trains 5 days a week and loses alot and simply cant do alot of moves but he never gives up.
Loved the fact it’s you in the video and commentating I’ve never come across someone commentating on their often matches. This was awesome thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing and inspiring others to compete without worry of result as long as you know you put forth the prep, effort and heart.
Damn that was a good breakdown - as a 50 year old this was important for me to see.
Nice! The match took place five years ago, so now I'm 50 as well. Power to the old guys!
This is so great. I'm 47 and just started BJJ about 5 months ago. Rolling with teenagers terrifies me lol.
Hey - Good on you! Those young guys can be a bit terrifying, as you say, but if they respect that you may not want to go 100 miles an hour all the time, it can be fun. And a bit humbling sometimes!
Pick and choose the young guys you train with if you have not already discovered many don't care that you might get hurt easily and heal very slow!

The soundbites you add are a great addition :)
Great video! 👏🏾 I was in suspense wondering what would happen. - It’s no fault of the young guys, but a lot of them have been training for 5 to 10 years by the time they start rolling in the adult tournaments. Some slice through opponents and others get a rude awakening. Although he won on points, you gave him a lot to think about in the end. 🤙🏾
Yeah... I'm glad to have at least concerned him a bit when I unleashed the fury!
That kimura would’ve tapped 90+% of us. These kids don’t know how lucky they have it with their dexterous shoulders!
Great points. This is why I don't go easy on the younger generation at tournaments. They usually know what they're in for from adults and higher belts, and who knows how much time they've put in on the mats already. There are green belts who are able to tap black belts! When it comes to the younger generations, the belt doesn't necessarily mean what it should. A new blue belt can now have 10+ years of training and black belt level skills.
@@jasonjean2901 True!
I’m a 38 y/o purple belt, and most of my training partners are 15-25 blue belts. For me to ever tap them or survive, and make them worry the whole round means I’m doing pretty good. I don’t expect to beat a kid who can recover over night, where it takes me 3 days after a hard class. I thought you did awesome, and kept it very technical.
Thanks!
@@Roll_Vids us old guys gotta support each other lol. Man, it’s wild to me how we aren’t old, per say, but in the martial arts/fight world, we are ancient.

Well, first of all, I commend you on your incredibly objective narration even though you were one of the contestants involved, and the one who lost the match. Also, the 15 year old is put together like a combatant beyond his years - when I was 15 my twin sister was taller than me. I grew so slowly (that was in 1970) - now I'm 6' 4" and she is 5' 7" - Is there nowadays something in the food? ... or not in the food? lol - Anyway, kudos for your open and honest report.

Awesome video brotha.
Why not try for some sweeps from half guard, instead of going for a triangle or standing up. I don't understand some of your choices.
You are right - I got a bit tunnel-visioned. It is not always easy to see all the options in the moment!
@@Roll_Vids My general sense is if you stand up it should be for a single leg takedown, otherwise you need to sweep. Just standing up to engage on the feet seems like not playing guard properly.

How does a 15 year old get a blue belt? Ibjjf rules say you have to be 16.
Lol, i think that kid just proved he earned his blue belt.. The ibjjf is just a competition league. Think of them like the nba or nfl
You CAN get a blue belt under IBJJF rules at 15. It goes by birth year, not by birthday. My opponent was about to turn 16. Clearly, he wore the blue belt well!
@@Roll_Vids I didn't know that, the chart says 16. Yes he is a good fighter!
Kid was surely legit and you did great. I will say in hindsight, if you would have looked for opportunities to use your "old man strength" earlier you would have possibly got the W.

Too many people forget that honor outweighs simple victory - you have honor, humility, and graciousness sir. I commend you for a battle well fought, and honorably lost.
BTW - if we're talking about a life-and-death struggle on the street, forget what I said. Gouge their eyes out, and eat'em. There's tournaments, then there's survival.

That was one of the most entertaining videos I've seen in a very long time. I REALLY need to get in to this sport! Liked and subbed.
Thanks! Yes, IMHO it is the best sport, and everyone should at least give it a shot. I hope it works for you!
You both have some serious chops. That kid is easily a purple belt. Had you gone full balls from the giddy up, I think I know how it ends ;) Pretty cool of you for sharing.
Everyone is like "oh, this is amazing/wow such skill" and for me it just looks like an extended gay version of pornhub. Boxing outclasses these guys in every way
And if one of these guys bring you to the floor what is your boxing going to help with? You might think grappling is gay but honestly it is the most fundamental fighting style for humans, the first sport we invented was wrestling. And also you can't keep training in boxing forever the brain damage will get you eventually, but I have seen 80 year olds in Judo, Wrestling, BJJ.
If you see anything pornographic here, you have a disturbing imagination.
You hesitated too much. You never really controlled him. You always let him set up on you... He was toying with you because you let him... It seems that you were always in defense: His moves surprised you. You are bigger than him so you should have dominated him, but it was the other way around. In your home gym make sure you are rolling with upper and lower belts. Allow yourself to be dominated so you can get used to mounting a rapid and successful defense... Then work on your attacks... Also, do some outside cardio... 1-2x per week...
That's all good advice. This match was 4 years ago, and I've overcome the hesitancy I showed here. I could still use that extra cardio training you speak of, though.
LOVE the dumb and dumber clips!!! You could see that if you wanted to turn up the heat you could have, and advanced accordingly. I appreciate your humility and playfulness. Great video. Subscribed accordingly.
Best. Movie. Ever.
Yeah, one thing I took away from this match is to flip the switch a bit earlier. There are enough battles to fight without fighting the clock as well. Thanks the the kind comment (and the sub)!
