It's why I think the belt system is kind of stupid. They should grade jui jitsu like any other sport where you do a performance tryout each year kind of like this and then get seeded into competition levels. Like in hockey you had entry level, then tier 1 entry level. Then you would make single "A" hockey if you preformed at an exemplary level. If you were a standout performer even at a competitive level you could be selected for "AA". If you showed signs of being able to compete at a professional or semi-professional level they would select you for "AAA" and from there you would either quit hockey and go on with your life or you would get drafted to your cities Junior team where the NHL scouts for the next crop of pros.
I think every jui jitsu/grappling school should have a group that is
-Just for fun (And then divide that group into particularily athletic individuals vs less athletic)
-A competitive group, (guys and gals who could go into a tournament, are athletic and dedicated) - How I would describe most of the guys in this video.
-A standout group. Guys and gals like the top couple at this tournament who would win more often than not against other athletic dedicated competitors.
-A gifted group. The ones who could easily be teaching the classes in the future and who could translate their skills into national championships or pro MMA.
The problem with not grouping people like this is that some places will give someone a blue belt based on time spent. And so you could get tons of blue belts who would be dominated by any of these guys. Hell I think some of these guys could give a lot of purple belts a run for their money.
As a 40 year old recreational black belt, those are some well trained white belts.. great competitive environment to produce winners

Where I train with Jon Thomas, in Gothenburg, we have white belts at 2 years experience.
So there’s a big skill difference between beginner class and ours.

In most schools they do 1-3 years.
I think our bjj class is around 2 years maybe less.
We don’t actually have someone that grades us in no gi.

I am Still a white belt on the Gi since I don't train with a Gi
If I had to do things differently, I would have done both.

I compete in submission wrestling, I’ve learned straight ankle locks, knee bar, toe holds, currently learning heel hooks.

In ibjjf I can only do ankle locks but we have some tournaments under adcc rules that allows me kneebars.

I’m mainly training for mma and self defense.
So double sleeve and spider guard or berimbolo doesn’t help me.

Champ was from my friends gym so I couldn’t grade him, there was a few promotions that day :)

Insane day. Pleasure to be invited down from Scotland with my team. Couldnt find a more welcoming team to train, roll and have some rounds with.

BJJ has changed so much since I started. These guys roll better than old school purple/brown belts in some ways.
I have no doubt that they have plenty to learn and will improve greatly, and that maybe some of their fundamentals aren’t all the way there, but as far as overall grappling ability, they are very impressive.
Yeah those guys lack of takedowns.
Because this is not jiujitsu is grappling and lacks so many techniques that we have in jiujitsu in Brazil with the gi. It is totally diferent
