The Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition (5/2014, Tel Aviv).
Since its inception in 1974, the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition is one of the foremost Piano Competitions in the world. Arthur Rubinstein, who gave his blessing to the competition, headed the jury of the first two competitions (1974 & 1977).
The competition, is held every three years in Tel Aviv, Israel.

I agree with a comment below: that if Seong-Jin did not win this competition it is more of an error on the judges side than on Seong-Jin's! The Bartok was madly difficult and played without any slightest fault; the Chopin was astonishing in its emotional nuances. This young man is already on of the greats of our day.

바르톡 진짜 음악이 살아움직이는 느낌이 드네요. 현대음악은 멜로디가 서정적이거나 조성음악같지 않은데도 그 안에서 어마어마한 스토리와 노래를 만들어서 풀어내는 능력. 누가 들어도 몰입하게 만드는? 너무 좋은 연주에 매일 귀가 호강합니다.....증말루 조성진은 최고!!!!
일단 조성진은 피아노치는게 정말행복해보이고 작곡가의 특징을 정말 잘살려서곡 해석을 진짜 잘하는듯 싶다

The best pianist in the world. The first time I heard him in this competition and listen to these recordings still again and again. Wherever and whatever he plays, everything is always genial.

Pourquoi commenter quelque chose qui est sublime et un Bartok des plus compliqués....? On écoute et ré ecoute sans se lasser...cette video est une grace qui nous fait être au plus près de JIN Cho.. dans la même ferveur. Admirable pianiste d´un talent fou.
I love him who is very brilliant at this time.
Out of Doors final movement is an absolute miracle. Played miraculously. Unbelievable experience to hear and see this. I would have stopped the competition right here and given him the first prize. The Rubenstein Competition jury is indeed clueless. And maybe even jealous.

You can understand f u l l y why he rightfully won in 2015 the Chopin 1st Prize! A.Rubinstein would have been enchanted with this .....!
I don't like competitions, at all, mostly when it comes to Art making (Arts/music) ... However, I came across this video and I have to say that if this kid was not given the first prize, he should certainly be, at least, among the winners ... I don't need to listen to the other competitors to know it ... If he can play Chopin (without question the most important work of this performance ) like this at 20, imaging what he will do when he is 40 or 50 (in terms of musical achievement)... This was Chopin from beginning to end! ... His heart was undoubtedly in every single note that he played ... His understanding of the style and his exquisitely sublime phrasing clearly reflects his unusually precocious musical maturity (musical wisdom/sensitivity) ... He obviously has the talent and the heart of a true artist ... I have no doubt that he'll be among my favorite classical pianists in the near future ... I have to say, on the other hand, that I find his gestures a little exaggerated/ unnatural ... Your music speaks for itself Seong , let the beauty and sincerity of it reflect on your gestures naturally, at all times ... your audience will appreciate you and your Art, even more ...

I heard this guy playing the Tschaikovsky concerto at the finale to this competition and was so entranced I needed to hear more. His Chopin sounded like well. . . . Chopin playing: so inward, restrained, sensitive. That funeral march movement can sometimes seem boring. In this guys hands however it burst into life and was full of meaning and . . . well . . love too. This guy is a great pianist and I hope to hear lots more from him. Just totally wonderful!

조성진군 덕분에 저는 48세에 새로운 쇼팽의세계에 푹 빠졌네요..쇼팽뿐 아니라 모든 작곡가들의 연주가 사람의마음을 편안하게 릴렉스 해주고. 잡념과 우울함이 저멀리 그저 연주곡을 몰입하여 듣게 되는 매력이 있습니다.사람의 마음을 치유하고 움직이게 하는 음악 그것이 예술의 숭고함임듯 합니다..너무나 감사 드립니다 ^^
Even after numerous repeated listening, I can't get over how remarkable his play of Bartok here. Similarly, his play of Pictures at the Exhibition by Mussorgsky at the Tchaikovsky competition in 2011 also shows the wide range of his potential, not to mention his sublime playing of Chopin and others. Listening to Seong Jin Cho's playing is, for me, deepening a greater appreciation of classical music. His play of Bartok, for example, moved me to learn more about Bartok the composer and his music, and his place in musical history in general.

I forgot this is a competition. I always do when I listen to Cho. I don't care who won the competition but I'm here just to listen to a beautiful rendition.
Chopin piano sonata the 3rd movement was so good to me. That describes exactly what I felt in my mom's funeral. I was in a deep sorrow, thinking how blessed I was with my wonderful mom. The memories of her comforted me in the funeral like the beautiful melody in the middle. Seongjin expresses every part of it very delicately.

그동안 계속 1위를 하지 못하고 3위에만 머물렀던
어린 청년 조성진군의 아픔과 불안이 내 마음으로 느껴진다...
음악을 사랑하는 사람으로서 음악을 해야만 자신의 뜻과 목적을 이루어 나갈 수 있는데
여느 세상도 마찬가지겠지만 음악세상은 냉정하다...
음악세상도 상업과 관련되어 있기 때문이다...
그래서 음악인은 자기가 사랑하는 음악을 하면서도 세상의 상업에
자신을 노출시킬 수 밖에 없는 중대한 기로에 항상 부딪치는 것이다...
음악가들에게 대중들의 사랑을 받을 수 있는 길은 연주하는 무대인데
그 기회를 잃어버린다면 아무도모르게 뒤안 길로 사라질 수 있는 것이다...
그런 냉혹한 음악세상에서 어쩌면 음악인들은 1위만이 살아남을 수 있다는
그 어떤 강박관념에 사로잡힐 수도 있다...
1위가 아니면 무어라고 확정할 수 없는 미래가 자꾸만 어른 거리는 것이다...
권위 있는 챠이콥스키 콩쿨에서 3위를 했는데도 음악시장과 음악무대와
대중들이 그다지 알아주지 않았다면 분명 불안한 것이다...
나는 조성진군의 놀라운 연주를 내내 지켜보면서 부러워하고 감탄하면서도,
마음에 진한 감동과 함께 그동안 성진군이 느꼈을 아픔까지도 함께 공유했다...
암담한 현실 가운데서 자신의 꿈을 펼치고 싶었던 어린 청년이 얼마나 염려됐을까...
얼마나 불안했을까...
그동안 얼마나 피나는 노력과 의지와 집념과 열정을 피아노에 쏟아 부었을까...?
그동안 오직 자기만이 공감할 수 있는 무수히 많은 고독과 부딪치며,
얼마나 많이 자신과의 싸움을 해왔던 것일까...?
성진군의 내면의 세계까지 바라보고 있었다면 나의 지나친 억측일까...?
어쩌면 그래서 마음에 진한 아픔도, 애잔함도 함께 밀려오는 것이리라...!
그러나 이제는 됐다...!
쇼팽이라는 권위의 콩쿨에서 1위라는 꿈을 희고 멋진 두 손에 거머 쥐었으니 정말 됐다...!
이제 성진군은 기품있고 고결한 음악으로... 열정적이면서도 강렬한 음악으로...
서정적이면서도 아름답고 감미로운 음악으로... 신비로운 선율의 음악으로...
장대한 음악세상을 향해 멋지고 찬란하게 부상하는 일만 남았다...!
그리고 세계속의 수많은 관중들을 향해 성진군 자신만이 창출해낼 수 있는
영롱하고 특별한 무한한 음악세계로 이끌어가면 되는 것이다...
사랑의 하나님이 특별하게 부어주신 아름다운 선물을

20세때 즈음 장래에대해 고민이 많았다는 인터뷰...여느 젊은이들 처럼... 음악가의 길로 생계가 해결안된다면 진로를 바꿀수도 있겠다 고민하며..일단 28세까진 계속 해보기로...다행히 2015년 쇼팽콩쿨로 인지도를 올리고 꾸준히 세계무대에서 활약하니 다행이네요. 하지만 저세계도 새로 발굴되는 신인들과 이미 거장인 음악가사이에 경쟁이 치열하다고...
피아노 연주 모습과 만들어내는 소리가 감탄을 자아내게 하는데요. 매일 듣지 않으면 하루 사는 의미가 없어질 만큼, 대단해요 !!

I don't really know if you mean, that nobodu can following that perfmance. Um tbh any pianist have is own interprétation, and if you wan't to compare them, I think many pianist are "better " than him

내가 조성진만 보는 이유가 바로 그겁니다 조성진은 표정으로 온 몸으로 음악을 표현합니다 나는 그게 좋아요 혹자는 과하다느니 덜 성숙해서 그렇다느니 하는데 나는 덤덤한 표정으로 치는 성숙한 (?)대가보다 조성진이 휠 낫습니다 사실 과장서러움의 대명사ㅇㅇ은 사실 과한게 맞아요 하지만 조성진은 딱 적절한 표현력으로 사람들을 빠져들게합니다 요즘 많이 억제 하는듯 해서 좀 그러네요
