There is an in-depth interview with Cho posted on the Berlin Phil's website today (04/23/24). Cho talks about his programs with the Berlin Phil for this upcoming season: Ravel, Beethoven, Shostakovich. . . Cho will be performing all of Ravel’s solo piano works in one evening.
"I am very fortunate to have spoken to many great artists since I was a teenager. And there’s one thing in common that they advised me - that I have to learn new pieces before I reach 40. When you’re over 40, it is a little bit harder to learn new pieces. So when I was 17, I wrote down all the repertoire that I wanted to learn before I turned 40. I still have that notebook. I’m turning 30 and I think I’ve done almost half of it."
"There are no ultimate achievements in this profession. Winning some competitions or playing with prestigious orchestras is really wonderful. And, I’m honored to be Artist in Residence with the Berliner Philharmoniker. But my real goal has to be related to musical depth."

This is why the view of the video is one of the highest in Chopin competition. Cho’s performance is perfect.
Cho is phenomenal, Bruce Liu is phenomenal.
If I were to pick who I think is better, I would say it's a draw.
It's sad that y'all chose to insult another pianist just to promote Cho.

The reason he is the best is because he doesn't tremble at all when he plays. He was so nervous, but he was so invested in the music of Chopin that, in the moment, he did not even realize this. He did not even realize he was nervous because he loves music so much.

@@raffamineiro1711 And now you are here, so before leaving, listen to Soenjin’s perfect playing. One judge gave him a score of 1out of 10 because he has a personal issue with Seonjin’s teacher. The judge is a very unethical and miserable musician! And Chopin's competition committee should get rid of any on in conflict of I interest or unethically and unfairly take responsibility as a judge. BUT!! Cho still won!

SJC performance is splendid , majestic and robust especially with the steinway with the more "schokoladen" round sound, made to fill up the whole room so to speak.
Bruce liu's peformance is delicate, precious, silk like, it really does keep you on edge with the clarity and soft brighteness of the fazioli.
At first I also find bruce with the fazioli sounding a little empty but then I end up loving bruce's performance and the sensitivity and lightness of his interpretation of the concerto.
For those of you who want an obvious comparison you could listen to bruce final round concerto (the vid with 1m+ view) at 5:43 and SJC final round concerto (this video) at 6:00.
Or bruce 8:30-9:00 and SJC 8:47-9:16 . In this one I prefer bruce take on it with his rubato over SJC.
Again, asking me which one is better would be silly, because technically and virtuosity is real for both these musician. It's different interpretation, different flavours.
However I'd say bruce virtuosity and delicate touch paired with the fazioli wins my heart at the moment because it's quite unique and a novelty

1000's of piano concerto yet I always came back to this. 🤍
French pianist Philippe Entremont gave Cho one point out of ten at the 2015 competition but he miraculously won.
I hope that guy will never be a judge in any competions ever again. His unprofessional and unethical behavior based on his personal feud with Cho's teacher was so unexceptable. Thinking positively, we can all appreciate that Cho's performance was much more superior than the others that even an evilish score could not taint his greatest masterpiece! Cho was definitely on another level in this competition and will continue to be the best forever.
Thankfully IIRC scores are weighted so that one rogue judge has reduced impact (His 1 ended up being like a 6 when taken into account). Regardless it was really shameful to see him give Cho a 1- I can understand a lower score if he didn't like the interpretation, but objectively you cannot give a performance like this a 1.

Same here. I discovered it in 2017, when I first became actively aware of the Chopin Competition and soon after, this performance.
I cannot remember a single day in recent memory where I haven't listened to this performance at least once... but usually closer to twice or three times a day. Usually followed up with Seong-jin's Scherzo No. 2 and or Ingolf Wunder's Grande Polonaise.
It's pretty much become a tradition of mine by now: Coming home after an average work-day, my mind often tends to stay at work, wondering if I've forgotten anything or whether I could've possibly come up with a better treatment or medication for patients.......................................................... But once I'm at home, sitting in front of my Computer, putting my Headphones on and starting this video, my mind just takes of into the skies and the only feelings and emotions left are those that the piece invokes in me.
It is an obvious coping-mechanism.... but I could not imagine a form of coping that's more beautiful than this!
I'm a man of Science.... but when I see and hear the absolute masterworks that Chopin, a mere mortal like you and me, was able to create (same goes for Bach, Mozart, Schumann and Beethoven to an extend), I can only describe it as magical.

too many pianists were overdoing Chopin in the 2021 competition. Finding secondary and tertiary melodies, doing strange (not always bad) emphasis on certain notes. Chopin is meant to be played beautifully. That's it. No need to overdo it. Bruce Liu played it most authentically, but is still a level behind Cho

Also a big credit to Maestro J. Kaspszyk and Warsaw Phil. for very 'fairly' orchestrating with the pianist.. . (unlike those at the 2011 and 2014 ones )
Bravo! Over the years, so many great interpretations of this beloved Chopin 's piece have been posted on CZcams. But, Seong Jin Cho's majestic and dynamic performance here continues to be the best of the best in my humble opinion. Cho is such a legend! Thank you, Chopin Institute, so much for posting his great performance here for many generations to listen, study, and appreciate what the highest standard of this piece should be like!

이번 18th 콩쿨을 비롯해서, 다른 경쟁 연주자들과 성진초의 가장 큰 차이점은 단순한 미스터치의 유무가 아니다.
바로 건반 위에서 자유로운 것.
귀로 소리를 듣는 동시에, 손은 자유롭게 건반을 노니며 선율을 만들어내는 능력.
이것은 천재여야만, 타고나야만 가능한 것이기에
다른 쟁쟁한 경쟁자들보다 성진초의 연주가 밝게 빛나면서도 많은 사람들의 심금을 울리는 것이 아닐까..
8년전 연주지만 저포함 여전히 많은 분들이 찾으시네요
클래식 세계에 들어온지 어느덧 5년차가 되었고 수많은 음악을 들어왔지만 이 연주는 다른 클래식이 넘어올수 없는 천상계 수준인 것 같습니다

Even though I am Korean, I wasn't interested in his performance when he won 2015 Chopin Competition. A Korean young guy won a piano competition in a far from distant country. Is that much amazing? Sitting in front of the piano again after 40 years, starting to learn the piano again, he has led me to his incredible, fascinating world. Thanks to him, I became more emotionally and culturally rich, and this year I began to enjoy the 18th Chopin Competition through live streaming. To find another pianist(actually I wanted to find a new pianist I am going to crush on).However, it was only my hope. I couldn't find a comparable performer, so I came back here, and I realize once again that he was at another level. I'm not saying that his performance is different because he's a Korean. I also feel an infinite honor to be born in the same century when I can hear and enjoy his performance as one of the people around the world. Also, I have a desire to learn more pieces and play more beautifully. Following his performance and taking steps with him for about a year is the 1st place on my bucket list. Having read lots of comments reminiscing Cho, I'd like to add one more thing: He opened a new testament era of Chopin Competition. B. C. is the acronym of Before Cho.

This is the umpteenth time I am listening to Seongjin's performance of Chopin's Op 11, one never gets tired of it (9 years after the competition). It is like listening to a Gandharva delivering heavenly music to you. Gandharva 乾闥婆is the god of music in Buddhist mythology. Seongjin is Gandharva.
Same in sanatana history, Gandharvas have special talents in art pieces.

If the jury of this year's competition use Cho's play as a criterion for evaluation, I'll admit that there's no first prize winner
I don't agree generally, I think Aristo Sham could match up with Cho's playing (he was really stunning), but sadly he is out since the second round, which dissappointed me the most in the Jury's quite unfair decision of the third rounds contestants and thus you might be right.

조성진의 피아노는 정말 섬세하고 우아하고 맑아서 고귀한 느낌이 나요. 쇼팽과 딱임
11월 출첵.성진초 연주의 많고 많은 좋은점들 중에 난 뭐가 제일 좋은걸까 오늘 생각을 해봤는데 선명함.어떤 곡을 쳐도 나타내는 조선생님 특유의 뭉개지 않는 선명함이 너무 좋음.
여리든 강하든, 작든 크든 모든 터치가 선명하게 아름다움.
특히 두개의 쇼피협에서는 감히 최고라고 생각함. 보통 피아니스트들에게 라피협이 치기 어려운 걸로 알려져 있지만(물론 극악의 난이도 맞긴 맞음) 이것 저것 들을수록 쇼팽의 피아노 협주곡이야말로 양의 탈을 쓴 늑대가 아닌가 하는 생각이 듬.
이걸 이분만큼 양의 탈을 유지한 채 늑대를 보이지 않으면서 물 흐르듯 유려하게 이런 수준의 음악으로 표현하는게 보통은 안 된다는 걸 시간이 갈수록 더 절절히 느끼고 있음.
언제 봐도 잘 치고 너무 쉽게 치니까 해석과 스타일의 차이가 있을 뿐 프로라면 다 이 정도의 완성도는 있을거라 생각했지만 그럴리가.
오늘 느낀건데 이제 다른 쇼피협은 들을 수 없는 귀가 되어버렸음.
성진초의 어떤 연주를 들어도 그저 아름답다,너무 좋다는 말 밖에 떠오르지 않는 게 내심 답답했는데 연주가 끝나고 오롯이 그말만 남게 해주는 연주가 얼마나 대단한건지. 테크닉이 다가 아니라고 하지만 일단 테크닉적으로 완벽하지 않으면 듣는 사람을 몰입시킬 수가 없고 몰입이 깨지는 순간 음악이 아니라 그저 뚱땅거림처럼 느껴지기 십상이라 언제나 완벽한 준비와 갓벽한 테크닉으로 그 음악 속으로 데리고 들어가 아름답다는 말만 남게 해주는 조선생님 그저 감사하다.
이 어려운 걸 숨쉬듯 쉬워보이게 만드는 당신은 대체....다시 한번 감사하다.
그런 의미에서 오늘은 바르샤바 필 이야기도 해야지.
다른 잘하는 오케도 많지만 쇼피협 만큼은 약간 느린듯 하지만 절대 지루하지 않게 끌고 가면서 쇼팽국의 오케다운 근본 넘치는 자신감이 느껴지는 중후하고 기품 있는 바르샤바 필의 사운드가 제일 좋음. 바르샤바 필도 감사하다.
그나저나 이 연주는 2022년에 들어도 세련됐어.
대체 언제 올드하다 느껴지는걸까.

인간의 언어로는 드러낼 수 없는 예술성의 극치에 다다른 것 같아요. 좋다는 말 이외의 다른 평론이 나온다는 것은 연주에 비판의 여지가 있다는 것인데, 이 연주는 정말 완벽합니다. 완벽해요...

2021년 18th 콩쿨의 결승 첫날 같은곡을 연주한 결승진출자들의 연주를 다 듣고 오는길에 들렀습니다. 조성진은 경쟁자로써의 연주 이상을 보여주는 마치 특별출연같은 느낌의 여유롭고도 자신감있는 음악을 들려주었네요
조성진급으로는 압도적으로 쳐야 스승, 국적 상관없이 1등할수있는거구나
그런가봐요. 최고 권위 콩쿨이라더니
이번 쇼콩 심사위원들‥ㅠ 실망스럽더군요.
이런 연주를 1점으로 깔아버린 미친 심사위원도 있었잖아요. 정말 그 인간은 커리어 조져버려야됨.
아시아 국가는 특히나 더 그럴듯

Christian Zimerman, who watched the final stage, contacted Seong Jin Cho directly. It's an amazing performance.
Zimerman must have been very impressed with this performance that he asked Kyung Wha Chung about him and write to him personally, he also went to his recital and recommended him to Simon Rattle.
저 긴연주곡을 한번의 미스터치없이 다 외워서 칠수있기까지 얼마나 노력했을지 감히 가늠할수조차없네요...
심지어 콩쿨때 저 곡 말고도 엄청 많이 쳤잖아요ㄷㄷ대단
근데 암보는 금방 돼요...
피아노을 치면 건반을 보고 쳐야지 악보를 보고 치면 틀릴 확률이 무지 높아지죠~~ 그래서 힘들어도 어쩔수 없이 암보하는듯요
생각외로 악보가 잘 외워지는 편입니다... 단 경력이 좀 되어야 가능하겠죠??
손열음씨도 암보가 힘들다는 건 유감이지만 재능이 없다는 걸 뜻한다고 말씀하셨어요
조성진은 사람이나 연주나 둘다 너무 깔끔하고 부드러운 것 같음 어떨땐 연주에서 긍정적으로 거친 느낌도 나는데 너무 과하지 않고 미스터치도 거의 본적이 없음 특히 라흐마니노프 피아노 협주곡 3번 오시아 카텐자 부분에 거친감정도 넣고 미스터치가 없다는게 진짜 미친실력이라는걸 증명하는거지 그냥 내가 본 최고의 피아니스트임
I just listened to Bruce Liu, the winner of the 2021 Competition. He is certainly a deserving winner, but there is something truly exceptional about Cho’s interpretation and touch. It’s on another level. He is a once in a lifetime gift. Having said that, I applaud all the contestants. What a grueling competition. Thank you for sharing your gift and incredible hardworking with the world. Bravo.

Liu's performance was phenomenal, but 2015 competitors were just so much better in general.
for me, Cho is, at the moment, one of the very very best piano players due to his deep sensitivity and technic
So elegant and dramatic at the same time. After watching 2021 competition, I couldn't but come back to him. Even the orchestra sounds better here. Bravo Cho-Pin. Bravo Cho, Seongjin.

그리고 거칠것없이 나아가는 그의 연주는 참 최고네요

오케스트라도 15년때가 더 안정적이고 좋네요
근데 심지어 조성진이 낸 자기 음반보다도 이 연주가 더 좋음. 이 연주는 진심 천상계임. 역사에 영원히 박제되었음.

@@freestyle6161 일단 오케스트라가 쇼팽콩쿨 버전이 더 듣기좋네요.. 특히 관악기 단원들의 기량차이가 있는듯 ㅠ 피아노야 뭐… 다 좋은데 뭔가 음반은 현장감? 이 좀 부족한것 빼면 딱히 흠잡을덴 없는데… 이게 오히려 현악기보다 관악기, 타악기 단원들의 기량이 굉장히 중요한듯..특히 오케스트라 음향의 조화랄까? 정작 한끝차이의 훌륭한 사운드를 만드는건.. 한두명뿐인 관악기, 그중에서도 금관악기 단원들이랑 팀파니 단원의 기량인듯요.. 오히려 현악기는 못하는분 좀 있어도 잘하는분들께 묻혀가기도 하니까요..
조성진만의 울림..정확함..속도감..섬세함..오케스트라와 지휘자와의 조합.. 아무도 못 이겨..........
피아노를 치면서 오케스트라 단원에게 미소 지어보이는 그 여유로운 모습 심장이 녹을것 같아요
솔직히 임동혁 임동민 입상한 2005년 만해도 콩쿨 영상이 이렇게 잘 보존되어 있지는 않기 때문에 10년 사이에 강산이 변해서 모든 영상이 좋은 화질로 유튜브에 남아있는게 감사할뿐. 조성진은 감정의 과잉이나 과시하는 모습이 없어서 좋음. 절제미. 세련미. 깔끔함. 유려함. 음악의 에센스만 표현하고자하는 그 태도가 너무 좋았다.

Nowadays we can find sooo many good performances of this concerto that deserve to be "legendary" recording out there thanks to social media, but Seonjin cho is totally on another level. I can't really explain how he is great in words.
