I was a little old man sitting around being stale, and I want you know watching your channel has given me ambition to tinker with stuff I’ve been saving forever. Restored a 1984 ginormous tiller. Working on a complete rebuild of a 1980 Wheel Horse tractor to help my daughter build a cabin in the woods. Restored a trailered leaf vacuum, with shredder. Thank you. It’s not cool stuff like you but these are good for me, plus I can use them on the property. Much obliged.

I would insert the bolt from top going down on the steering, so if the nut and washer falls off the bolt wont fall off as well. I enjoy watching your videos and seeing all the different stuff that you do and accomplish. Thank you!!
He did say those bolts were just for mock up, the right bolts would get there in a couple days.

That makes sense for sure. You would want the bolt to be the right length though. I know, these are mock up. Just sayin. That is a vulnerable spot for a bolt tail to be on a rock crawler.
or perhaps "cotter pin / safety wire" to prevent the "falling off" in the first place? Paul will get it right I'm pretty sure.
If the threads are facing down, they are at risk of damage, making repairs and maintenance harder.
I always oriented bolts for my RCs to be up and back. Of course a real truck can handle a bit more abuse.

Just a friendly hint: I got a small shard of steel in my eye, doing lathe work. I had to go back to the eye doctor every 2 days and get my eyeball peeled (cornea) because the steel had rusted and stained my eyeball between the layers of my cornea. Imagine getting your eyeball peeled every two days for 2 weeks and you'll probably remember to wear your safety glasses.

Just had a friend get metal removed out of his eye Tuesday. Like you he had rust. He said he finally opened his box of safety glasses and will now use them. Some learn by others mistakes, while others by their own with a select few never learn. Pick your category, just know others are watching while judging, of course.

Given that Paul does a lot by using his "eyecrometer" when doing his fabrications, I would imagine that a lot of off the shelf parts will not exactly fit right away. But he does a great job at making what he has, fit and do the job.

And no, you're not. Almost every single time I start twisting wrenches, I have to make sure I have a backup ride to get to the parts store. I think they do it on purpose, to get us to buy gloves, and ratchets, and 10mm sockets, and whatever else they can put on the candy rack at the register, lol

It's not just you getting the wrong parts, I don't consider it a project unless 1, I bleed, and 2. I have to go to the parts store at least twice. keep up the good work.
Exactly. As far as I can see, Paul is way ahead of most of us. At least he has the know how and the shop how to fix most of it without the venerable multiple parts runs extravaganzas.
At least twice for sure. The more the knuckles bleed the better the project runs after.

After I started watching you tube fix it videos, I soon realized "dang I am not the only one that happens to". So yes every project I work on has some "special" moments. Sometimes its just a bolt or socket that hit floor and caused an hour long search.
Paul, you should feel "real special" and blessed considering the wonderful family and terrific friends you have. Watching you cope so well with "fab issues" is a treat for your fans - keep it coming, please.

Paul, you are so lucky, your dad took the time to explain how and showed you how to work on your car. My dad tried and as I was all thumbs he grew frustrated and quit trying to show me. I did suffer through the problem of never having the light in the right spot. I enjoy your show and everything you do is just top notch. Michelle's laugh is ok and your helper is just fine. Ignore the comments from the haters, you know that "haters gonna hate" Love the show.

I quite often have to make some brand new part work by modifying it in some way. My wife thinks I'm just never satisfied, but it seems very little is "bolt on" ready.
Whatever they designed, they made it work on the test vehicle, and it was therefore "bolt on" ready for that one vehicle 😉
@@kylancook3477 Yup, that ONE vehicle. I worked in the auto industry for years and they make tons of small changes throughout the year - supplier changes due to shortages, cost savings, etc. Those little changes go unnoticed to all but the wrench-turners.

If it was me I'd have probably installed those Jeep hood latches facing the other direction so the latch swings down to close. But that's just me and I love that FJ Paul. Keep up the good work!

If it says direct bolt on….Run… it will never fit right! Doesn’t matter if it is a motor or chassis part. You are not alone! Awesome videos!
You're DEFINITELY not the only one to buy parts that didn't work right out of the box. My machined thermostat housing never sealed to my coolant housing, and I couldn't fix a MASSIVE coolant leak without putting a factory one back on.
You are doing a great job with this channel.

I was a fan of SRK Cycles and Bikes and Beards channels long before I found Matt’s Off Road Recovery. The Golden Nugget project introduced me to Fab Rats, Robbie Layton, Tom Tom, and Bleepin’ Jeep. I am really glad you guys hooked up and got together on these jobs. I think what you guys are doing for Ed is FANTASTIC!
10:38 That arm is soooo close to that tire - way more than I'd be all that comfortable with. I'm wondering if it's going to foul occasionally when you air down and start beating on rocks. You _sure_ you don't have them on the wrong sides? That would make more sense, as the steering arm pivot is usually intended to be inboard of the ball joints.
I completed my first engine rebuild the other month and bought rockers that fit EVERY small block Chevy motor except for the Vortex, which is what I've got. I also double-purchased too many gaskets, haha
right parts hahaha the story that never ends, especially when you try to buy something from a dealer who doesn't depend on part number, and for the screws always bring longer, cut it better than weld it, good to see the FJ again, it's really a piece of art.
Paul, with so many components and so many standards all you can do is increase your knowledge in what works and fits and what does not. The wisdom is exponential with what you are accomplishing. HooRaa!
Kudos to editing! I knew from the music choice starting at the taper drill, that some mulligans were coming. And I never get tired of seeing awesome lathe work.
Always admired fellows that know their way around a lathe. I never could finesse a micrometer. My monkey-fist mitts never developed the right touch.
Michael, you have me thinking of Robby Layton who often mentions Hillbilly's 'Monkey Hands' because he is so strong. Robby is a funny guy and his channel is a great addition to the MORR, Fab Rats, Trial Mater, Mischief Maker, Casey LaDelle type CZcams channels. Heck, there is getting to be quite a list of them. I don't count the 'other Casey' who used to be best buddies with Matt. He suddenly went mad and his channel became unwatchable.
I was interested so just checked Casey's ORR on Social Blade, and it looks like his channel is dying a death. He only has 50K subs now, which I am sure is less than he had a year ago.
You are not alone & not special regarding the wrong parts. It is always like that. We just figure it out & keep on keepin on!
I always heard that skill is knowing techniques and procedures to get something done. But, compensating/hiding the mistakes is artistry. In my shop, besides making lots off goofy mistakes, my motto is "if it can get caught on something, it will !!". Great video.

I’m always amazed how easy you make engine builds look. I can’t wait to break down my Mopar 318 magnum for a rebuild. It’ll be my first engine rebuild.
I honestly don't know what some of these suppliers and companies are thinking, yes mistakes and accidents can happen , but parts of a kit not fitting together when everything comes from one company. Sometimes it is really frustrating, especially before a race or trying to meet a deadline. This is why you don't throw anything out, so you can fab it to use on something else.
100% on not throwing anything away! I always keep the old parts because most of the time I'm always trying to upgrade aka I can't leave anything alone.

His satisfying to be able to take it apart, modify it and fabricate what you need.
I’ve built a few strokers. I’ve found that you can space the windage tray away from the crank with a washer or two (depending on the thickness) between the head of the stud and the tray. Also you may have to modify the foot on the oil pickup. Saves cutting up the windage tray.
Im on my 4th starter on my 454. First one had no bushing in the nose cone and worked for about 4 starts. Secound one was so far off on the engagement i couldn't put enough shims on the inside to get it far enough away from the flywheel to work 3rd one same thing . 4th one has as many shims as i can get on the outside to get it close enough to the flywheel and is still too far away. All the same part number starters from oriles. Just junk. Im not even going to take it back just going to go get an old one from the junk yard that don't need shims and have it rebuilt. Im done with fighting with cheap parts store starters.

Used to love selling fat long grade8 bolts. Money in my pocket, and listening to the builds.
Parts store back home was owned by an old friend of my dad. With no computers the counter was lined with parts catalogs the guy had to go through from one end to the other to look up a part number. Dad swore all that time spent going through those catalogs was to make sure we’d have to come back and exchange, just to get us back in the shop. Never fail - wrong part every time
I would do a windshield update to keep Michelle warm .

Often it feels like the only time I get the right parts is when I show up to the store with the old parts in hand to compare .
After I retired I took a part time job delivering auto parts from a major auto parts retailer. At times I was embarrassed because of the high percentage of the times that I was given the wrong part to deliver. It caused the repairman to get really upset and I can certainly understand why. That is the main reason that when I go to pick up parts for my own vehicle that if at all possible I take the old parts with me so I can match them up in the store.

A good motor is always a GOOD THING!
I love the comment "it'll be straightforward and easy" as he repeats the process at least three times getting the grease applied and hole drilled. Love the show, and wouldn't want it over-produced even if it would be cleaner. It would just take out the human aspect of what every other person out there has to actually go through in their own garages.

Love watching your show! Michelle and Randal are both great! My dad waswas never very mechanically inclined, but tried to help me with my first truck. It was a 1973 Chevy Cheyenne with a 350. I spent countless hours working on that thing never having a clue what I was doing. Didn't have CZcams to look up how to do stuff in 1994. I can only imagine the kind of things I would have upgraded and done if I would have had it.
