The arena only seems to be an issue for anyone who doesn't know anything about Utah. They want to stay in the center of downtown Salt Lake. There simply isn't the land to build a new arena around there unless they were to completely demolish the Delta Center, and that's not an option.
Bettman and the board of governors are happy with the plan and Utah fans are happy with the plan because although the Delta Center might not mean much to anyone outside of Utah, for Utah sports fans, it's iconic.
If you would go watch interviews or the press conference they held, you would know their plan for renovation. Next summer they'll renovate the seating on one side of the arena (behind the goals) and the summer after that they'll do the other side. This isn't a full remodel of the inside, it's just two sides of it that will only take two summers to complete.

It's odd to think that Delta Center would mean very little to people outside Utah.
It's arguably one of the most important and iconic arenas remaining in the NBA.
It's where Stockton broke the all-time assists record. It's where he broke the all-time steals record. It's where the 1997 and 1998 Finals took place; two of the three highest-rated/watched NBA Finals in history. It's where Game 4 took place (Stockton's full-court pass to Malone that won the game). It's where The Flu Game took place (Game 5, 1997). It's where Jordan's final game as a Bull occurred (Game 6, 1998).
For anyone that really cares about the NBA and its history, it's arguably one of the Top 5 most important arenas in existence.
It also was uniquely built so far as how the seating was originally designed to cantilever over the floor, creating huge sound volume and intimidation for opposing teams.
You'd think that all the people that still obsess over Jordan, and The 90s NBA as a whole, would realize how important this arena is in that history.

Huge battle with the City of Seattle and Port of Seattle. Locals wanted it but the politicians won again. A couple of things Ginger. First off, the Delta Center is some 30 yrs old but not as dilapidated and ancient as you think it is, still a fantastic basketball arena. Second, I may agree with you on spending a ton of cash to try to modify it if it can even be done, just to gain some 3k seats seems almost doing it on the cheap yet not cheap. Not sure they really have yet to come up with a plan but said they are going to try a configuration that might work using computer technology on a design and what it says would need to be done to make that design work. Any normal designer or engineer would walk in, look at the set up and say can't be done. Third is that it looks like the bureaucrats insist it stay in downtown SLC as Smith has been a fan of an idea of an entire new sports village and arena for the Jazz and hockey about 25 miles south of downtown SLC in Draper. And last what may make sense is that if Smith concludes we need a new arena and keeping it in downtown about the only way that works is demolish the Delta Center and rebuild, meaning at least a 2 to 4 year process with no arena. Probably forces the hockey team to the 12k Maverick center during the period and the Jazz to the Huntsman Center at the University of Utah. Actually not bad alternatives for temporary homes. Here's my question: where did Ryan Smith think this was going to happen when he presented his case before Utah state legislators to get the public funding needed to make this thing happen? Plus what exactly is going on with the Gateway? Almost every time I go there nowadays, it is a ghost town. There are very few shops left, nobody goes to the theater there anymore, and the only things drawing people in are the planetarium and the children's museum. Couldn't they just knock some of those buildings down and build the new arena there? Yes, the Delta Center could be salvaged if they somehow made the sightlines work for hockey as well as basketball, but it's going to take a lot of work, as he said. But at least the good news is, at the rate things are going, it'll be about four years before the Jazz are able to play between mid-April and mid-September, so that gives construction workers plenty of time to work on the renovations if needed.

There are nearby arenas that would work as temp facilities while they renovate/rebuild/refurbish/remodel the Delta Center. The Utes basketball team has their own building that seats 15000 and the Jazz can share that for a few years. There is also a hockey arena in the area )West Valley City) that hosted hockey during the 2002 Olympics where their ECHL team currently plays that's about 10000-11000 capacity. Still, a new building probably would work better long term.

$500 million is not chump change. Ryan Smith has a $2B net worth. If he can save 1/4 his net worth by renovating the old arena, he absolutely should. I would like to see more teams renovating old arenas/stadiums. Much less wasteful than tearing down a 30 year old stadium. And would be amazing if we still had stadiums like Shibe, Forbes, Crosley, Chicago Stadium, Comiskey, Tiger, Ebbets, Polo grounds, old yankee, sportsman park, old soldier field, etc

I wish they would build a new arena across the street but the Delta Center has plenty of space being around 800k sq ft. I will withhold judgement until I see the renderings. Downtown is the place to be. Out near Herriman would be a pain for people to get to 41 nights out of the year. Utah is really growing. I grew up there. I live in Washington State now. My parents still live there and it's insane how much the population has grown.

They cannot do a major gutting or renovation of the Delta Center. The Jazz and the NHL team have to use the arena 6 months each year. That means that arena employees, fans, etc will be in the building. You can’t do major renovations with all those people. It is a serious safety hazard. Yes there is a 6 month period where Jazz and NHL team will be in their off seasons. But doing renovations in 6 month periods would be insane. BTW the reason they were able to do major renovations of the Key Arena in Seattle is that there was no NBA or NHL team playing. They were able to take their time and do it right. That is not the case with the Delta Center.

I can imagine the new arena being made within the next 2 to 4 years from now however I can agree with you on why doesn’t it make sense but I can see why they would want some renovations on Delta Center and I’m unsure that you can renovate the arena’s interior especially if it’s over 3 decades old unless you actually rebuild it from within but with the arena’s exterior you can though

Wells Fargo Center in South Philly. Home to the Flyers, Sixers and NLL Wings. That Arena was built in 1996-97. They just finished renovating that arena this year. Took about 3 years to complete. It only cost them $400 million, mostly changing out the seats, that brand new 8-16K curved center hung video board, a new $20 seats up at the very top, and everything else on the concourse and the video boards and lights on the outside. Not including the paint job that they did.
Now with the Delta Center, that arena looks like its still in good condition inside and out. The Only problem that I'm seeing is that Lower bowl area. That arena was mostly built for basketball only. The only way that they can get more seats is to expand the arena out as best as possible so you get more end seating or otherwise its gonna look like the Barclays center Brooklyn.
Now about Seattle's arena. Its a historical landmark of the city especially that roof. They knew what they had to do, If it cost about over a billion, so be it. I would rather keep a building instead of imploding it and then rebuilding. Thats more money to shell out on the taxpayers of Utah.

  • @briand5083

The argument of the exterior being obsolete is a silly one. It has a modern appearance for the time it was built. We don't tear down our homes and private commercial buildings every 20 or so year to get a modern looking building. So who cares if the Delta Center has a 1990's look to it? It was build in the 90's. Lets just demolish the entire downtown area every 20-30 years while we're at it, sure makes sense! With that said, they should leave the Delta Center as it is and keep the Jazz there. They can build a hocky specific arena elsewhere. I don't see why it's a priority to move the Jazz to wherever the Coyotes end up. Seems silly to me.

One problem with land in downtown Salt Lake City is it is mostly already owned by the LDS Church. There are plans to renovate the outside exterior as well and surrounding block to include a entertainment district. Not sure if you have seen the outside renderings that were released. But the main focus will be to fix the interior until it has been completed. The government requested this so the Delta Center along with the entertainment district can be the central hub for the Winter Olympics. Do I agree with the decision no. I am on board with you as well they should just tear it down and build a complete new arena. But if they did that the Jazz and new hockey team would end up in the same boat as the Coyotes. One playing in a college arena and other playing in a minor league hockey arena until the stadium was completed.

Maybe the NHL shouldn’t have rushed to salt lake until the arena was confirmed. Seeing now that the coyotes are closer to playing in an actual hockey rink than the salt lake team, this could be an embarrassing moment for the NHL. If anything they should have announced the NHL moving to salt lake now but that the coyotes would play one final season in Arizona. Would’ve given players, coaches, staff, and fans at least a moment to prepare for relocation plus salt lake would’ve gotten their shit together because this is not a good start for the salt lake franchise but so follows this franchise from Winnipeg and Arizona where no matter the ownership or location, it’s always been rough.
