  • 🛠 Trepanation: the practice of drilling a hole in your head. 🛠 Ever wonder about trepaning and how it's done? Perhaps why someone would drill a hole in their head? Or how one might go about performing self-trepanation? In this episode of Inkademic, we look at all of the above and trepanation throughout history and the arts. We go all the way back to prehistoric Peru, travel to 16th century Europe, and end up in the modern day. This sort of extreme body modification has been practiced for more than twelve thousand years and was surprisingly non-lethal (at least, in certain places and at certain times). We hope you enjoy this deep dive into the single oldest surgical procedure known!
    Please remember that trepanation can be extremely dangerous and we are absolutely not suggesting you do it. This video is for education and entertainment purposes only.
    Note: the original "Heartbeat in the Brain" documentary was found and screened in 2011.

    I understand a thousand percent how this could be the oldest surgical practice, I’ve had migraines so bad that I’ve yelled to cut my head off. I mean the skin on your head in quite thin. There’s another video of a lady talking about trepanation and the successes of it and higher consciousness and she leans forward and has a scar on her head. Hmmmmm also I love that idea of brain surgery out in the field.

      I want to do this because of the migraines too. I've grabbed at my eye socket and really wanted to pull my skull open. If it gets rid of migraines, I would do it

    • @SquirrelASMR
      @SquirrelASMR Před 2 lety +1

      I used to get insane migraines too and would have to be hospitalized sometimes, like curled up in the washroom praying for quick death or decidin to yank out my eyeball to end the pain (i doubt it would work but it feels that painful), it's gotten so bad and painful twice that my memory was even affected and I couldn't for the life of me remember the names of my friends. The pain itself isn't even the worse part, like if you had the exact same pain in an arm or leg, you would probably be fine to ignore it to some degree, but when the pain is in your head and eyeball, it feels like your entire existence is throbbing swelling pain and you can't think or relax and if you do sleep you get dreams about your head being run over by a steamroller.
      Eventually I started being able to spot the early symptoms of when migraines were near, and always make sure to stretch and massage my neck, shoulder and back, and some DIY at home chiropractic adjustments. Another thing that helps is having a heating pad on those affected muscles too. Lots of water of course too. I find I mainly get them from cold and super tight neck muscles. Lucky I haven't had a serious hospitalization type migraine for almost a decade now, but have had a few normal bad ones. I have tried quite a few specific migrain meds, but none really work, except for maybe a simple advil liquigel and the exercises I mentioned above.
      Anyways hope you two are doing well and haven't had any migraines since commenting.

    I really enjoyed your presentation on this topic. It wasn’t overhyped with obnoxious sound effects or cut-a-way scenes and you weren’t yelling the information or cracking cheesy jokes. Your voice and delivery was calm, collected and factual based. Liked and subscribed! Off to check out more of your videos.

    Great video! I always watch trepanation videos when I have a migraine like I do now, lol. I like to imagine pressure escaping my skull and the pain going away, lol. It helps to just imagine that, even though I don’t think it would help anything. However when having massive, clinically diagnosed chronic migraines...anything is tempting lol.

      @@HotTakeAndy when it’s at full level, everything yellow, small lights might as well be the sun, it really does seem like a hole would release steam and pressure lol. Found some things you can order at Walgreens, CVS, & Walmart called BeKool strips. They go across your forehead and they actually help. Very cooling sensation. Also taking a phenergran & Imitrex helps too along with some coffee lol. Figured I’d share because I know how much suffering chronic migraines cause.

    i miss the good times when people used to drill holes in their head....now they'r just staring at phones and not socializing anymore

  • @JivecattheMagnificent

    This was a cool video, man, but it would have been nice to hear about *why* people like Amanda and her mates were drilling holes into their skulls. As I understand it, they're still hoping more research will be done into it, though I must admit, listening to her reasons as to why she thinks it's a beneficial procedure leave a lot to be desired. You'd also think it was incredibly dangerous to have a hole in the skull, but yeah apparently the layer beneath the top part of the skull still protects the brain, and the skin would grow back over the wound pretty quickly anyway (at least, so I believe).

    It is medically necessary now and in the past it was to relieve pressure from subdural hematomas due to bleeding and is still done today.

      100%. I mention that and heavily point out that there are very legitimate reasons to do this. I just try to point out that doing it for literally any other reason is nonsense. 😊

    As a survivor of trepenation I disagree w your assessment. It is used for hematomas and any pressure build up from head accidents without the reduction of pressure from brain healing the head wouldn’t work properly and send wrong electrical signals to the heart and cause possible heart failure. Brain = battery + Heart = engine.
