    I love how proud of him his master was when he beat him and proved he was ready to lead a chamber. Love how his extra challenge actually helped San Ta even more, when I was a kid I prob thought this guy was being mean, but ofc now you realize he wanted to make sure the rookie was ready

    When I was younger and I watched this I thought that he was being a dick because of how he handled San Te throughout the movie and because he seemed pretty smug after the first attempt. But now, watching it years later, you can see the visible disappointment on his face when he asked him how many times he tapped him after San Te's second attempt and how excited he is at the possibility of being beaten on the third.

    The first weapon San Ta used might have led him to success if he had kept a far proximity position from the opponent and just made him, his opponent, wear himself out swinging those swords around. Once his opponent got tired, he could move in for the kill. He tried to make the first duel a close proximity match too soon and the knife master took advantage. Notice how as soon as San Ta gets close in the first duel, the knife master makes him pay for it.

    • @mestizoboy
      @mestizoboy Před 6 lety +2

      scott doran: In the early-to-mid 80s, the Fox station in Fresno, CA (KMPH TV 26, if I remember correctly) had a weekly show called Black Belt Theater (which is culturally inaccurate due to the films being kung-fu films). Anyway, this movie was called "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" the numerous times it was played on this show. It has also been called "The Master Killer" or "Shaolin Master Killer" elsewhere.
      In my opinion, it was the best movie that show ever presented.
      Marketing will change/alter movie titles for many reasons, usually for market acceptance/sales: think of "The 51st State" vs. "Formula 51", or "Leon" vs. "The Professional" vs. "Leon: The Professional". Or, closer to this scenario, "The Chinese Connection" vs. "Fists of Fury", or "Fist of Fury" vs. "The Big Boss".

      this symbol is known as Swastika. Its been used in Hinduism and passed on to Buddhism and Jainism from centuries. It stands for good luck. Nazis used it for all evil purpose and made it look like a symbol of devil. The symbol is still used in many hindu festivals like Diwali. So don't be surprised if you see this symbol in a Hindu house.

      It doesn't necessarily make sense but at least when he's beating various Mongolian generals to death at the end and they're like "Wait aren't you, as a monk, not supposed to go around using supernatural martial arts to kill the shit out of people" he has that "Even Buddha must conquer evil" answer. I don't know if that's theologically accurate but the movie owns what it's doing.
