  • IP MAN Best Scene 2019
During filming, conflicts arose between the producers of Ip Man and filmmaker Wong Kar-wai over the film's working title. Wong, who had been developing his own Ip Man biopic, clashed with the producers after learning that their film would be titled Grandmaster Ip Man (Chinese: 一代宗師葉問), which was too similar to the title of the other film. The producers of Ip Man agreed to change the film title, despite Wong's film being in development hell. Wong's film, titled The Grandmaster, was released on 10 January 2013.
Ip Man is the first film in the Ip Man film series. It premiered in Beijing on 10 December 2008, and was released theatrically in Hong Kong on 19 December 2008, receiving widespread acclaim from critics and audiences. Before the film's release, Raymond Wong announced that there would be a sequel; a second installment titled Ip Man 2, was released in April 2010, and a third installment titled Ip Man 3 was released in 2015, with a fourth installment scheduled to be released in 2019.[3] Ip Man grossed over US$21 million worldwide, despite not being released in North America and most of Europe. Following its success, the film was nominated for 12 Hong Kong Film Awards, winning awards for Best Film and Best Action Choreography.

IP man vs Mike Tyson - absolutely perfect Mike Tyson Pika Boo boxing style he is famous for. Watching this after the exhibition fight of Mike at the age of 55 and this man still remembers everything Mr. Cass De Mato taught him.
Thoroughly enjoyed to watch this epic scene in IP man especially the the end when the timer goes off and BOTH stop at an impasse. Shows the absolute utmost respect of both fighters and their individual fighting style.
Side note - I'm definitely no boxer, but I have been a studen of San Soo Kung Fu which really emphasize on both Wu Shu and Win Chun for very close face to face fighting, manipulation of your opponent's movement as your advantage.

The mike Tyson fight was easily the best. Also, he’s probably the strongest character in the series considering he’s also old like ip man. He showed the most adaptability combined with speed and power. Ip man was never able to just counter him with 1 strategy, and was constantly on the back foot needing to switch it up because Mike would adapt too fast.

Since you have an insider perspective, I'm wondering: Do you find it as interesting as I do how the portrayal of boxing changed between Twister and Tyson?
Twister was a straight-up caricature of an arrogant brute, and boxing was portrayed as a kinda trash-tier style with gaping flaws to be exploited, while the Tyson fight was choreographed as a hard-style master fighting a soft-style master on equal footing.

    • @FC-xy4tc

      @@Just_A_Dude
Twister was an homage to the trope in the kung fu genre of an arrogant white fighter who proceeds to get the shit kicked out of him by the protagonist. It's usually to show the superiority of the whatever the protagonists style is, and also to sort of hail back to western abuse of China (with later examples being fairly recent with the funding of the KMT by the US in an attempt to secure a trade monopoly with China) that ends with the righteous protagonist beating down an arrogant brute, as opposed to the cultured and mild mannered Chinese fighter.
Meanwhile Tyson's character is effectively a Chinese migrant (he lives there and has a family) who has a hardened criminal past and is the "final boss" so to speak of that part of the film (it would have been anti-climactic for him to just lose easily).
Also it's a difference in character, Twister is a sort of complacent champion who has been at the top for too long, Tyson's character is someone who came up the hard way and had to remain hard to stay at the top.
It's not really about the Boxing, though Boxers tend to get smashed by Kung Fu in such film's. Which would sort of make sense when you consider traditional Chinese martial arts, which pretty much died out during the cultural revolution and as a result of the Boxer's Rebellion before that, were very much like traditional Karate and Boxing, a sort of general combative method (the various superfluous aesthetic aspects are basically just both a flourish and also a means of hiding what you are doing past the bare necessities for fighting).
Jet Lee's character in Fearless (who uses a sort of blend of Wushu with Sanda), and that film overall, sort of show what traditional Chinese styles would have looked a little like, with massive aesthetic changes and excessive movements of course (footwork and hand placement would have been the same as traditional Boxing/Karate, hands at mid level to intercept a takedown, feet not too wide apart, and footwork was linear), but that's another story.
It's also about the character themselves influencing the style. Twister is just a boxer, so he loses out when other rules are in play. Tyson's character is sort of a dirty boxer/street fighter. It's like Ip Man's fellow disciple of another Wing Chun style having a different, far more aggressive style of fighting contrasting to his character being both desperate in a way and also far more willing to hurt people.

And he returns home to his family with only that. The bloody bag of rice from his fellow master friend that earned it during his tourney fights, was given to the master’s wife-turned widow. Honorable and humble. Powerful, yet gentle characteristics of peak human form.❤

The interesting thing about watching all these clips together is that the only other style that seemed to give Ip Man any real trouble was Western Boxing. Maybe because in boxing his opponent wasn't just standing around at arms length waiting to be hit. Tyson was moving all the time even before any punches were thrown making it hard to pin him down.

its because of their overwhelming power, and form. it takes a lot to overcome a boxer with Wing Chun which focuses on intercepting moves especially when they use their entire body to throw strong and fast punches . Wing chun is a soft style of martial arts but dont get it twisted, Ip Man went on the right track to defeating both Tyson and the other boxer. The best way for a Wing Chun fighter to win against a boxer is to hit places that can’t be trained to fend against damage like the eye, balls but specifically the knee. Boxers can’t do much against tackles and their legs are very vulnerable in general unless you’re an boxer that uses an outboxer style or a kickboxer which doesnt count and so because of this, you can utilise Wing Chun’s emphasis on low kicks to hit the knee and get close to them so they cant punch and put them on the ground which can be followed up by whatever. Easier said than done though, boxers are scary. One punch and you’re out of the fight.

Nobody knows what he was doing during the war other than that he was enlisted as a police officer (which this movie doesn't even mention). He had a mistress that the movies also don't mention and the main reason he fought and taught wing chun was to support his opium addiction which is also not mentioned in the movies.

The fight scenes must have taken months too perfect. I respect the men , women, and children that participate in these movies. I couldn't imagine how many times someone was accidentally hurt in the making of a film of this nature. But the end result is always phenomenal. A lot of people say that wing Chung is inefficient in a street fight ,or a mugging etc. And they are right. One artform or style will never protect you or your loved ones. Because they may be bigger or stronger or just plain out too do harm. Or worse. Combining different methods of defense will always increase your chances. Train hard ,train diligently, but most importantly, never use what you learn or are taught too use it as a way too harm others for wealth or recklessness.. it's for self defense.

Wouldn't argue that it's almost nothing more than a very heavy massage for the big bois though. As for the flurry... I have no idea what the fuck that is for. That being said though, I believe what Ip Man said about "Martial Arts having nothing to do with how effective you are as a fighter" applies to all who wish to practice a particular style, be it Karate that has a very rough way of absorbing attacks and throwing counters or Boxing which focuses on movement and delivering very quick, powerful and accurate punches that can KO another guy in a single clean hit.

Unfortunately due to size, most Chinese martial artists aren’t strong enough or heavy enough to deal damage to people much bigger than them. It makes sense that you lose to someone much bigger than you, and when they’re as skilled as Mike Tyson, there’s very little you can do in fisti-cuffs against an opponent like that unless you’re more similar in size.

There was even a part where he stepped on his enemy's foot and broke it just like that, and it happened in frame, uncensored, uncut or whatever. I came here to see this awesome scene and now I realize. It was brutal, yet a representation of a chinnese man's anger to those japanese.
