LANDSLIDE! Hundreds of tonnes of mud, rocks, trees & vegetation blocking the canal.

- We were due to leave the marina at Brinklow in about a week but we received a notification email from the canal & river trust advising of a landslide completely blocking the navigation & towpath.
Upon investigation there are hundreds of tonnes that will need removing & due to the location it's going to be incredibly hard to do & so could be there for a long time which will cause massive disruption to boaters & hire companies.
Before it is brought up in the comments, I do pass a single panel fence in the vlog that says "towpath temporary closure" but it was just a basic sign with not even the name of who or what agency put the fence up. The fence had a 2 foot gap to the side of it so was easily passed & there was nothing saying that there was a danger or any prohibition of passing the fence panel for members of the public; it seemed that it was simply advising that you would not be able to travel the length of the towpath. Based on this I made my own dynamic risk assessment & was aware of my situation at all times.

Please subscribe & we will endeavour to run updates on any progress made on its removal.

Thanks very much.

The visual is worth 1000 CRT stoppage notices, thanks. I remember creeping through there last autumn thinking it looked very unstable.
You’re welcome Mandella. Glad you found it useful.
Thanks Wayne, really shows the extent of the damage. What a shame. Our plan is to go that direction in April. Only time will tell if we need to change our plans. 😢
I think it’s likely to be months. Just been advised further slip today. Will check it out tomorrow & update.
Great vlog although it was very sad to see. Thanks for taking the time and effort to show us Wayne. You managed to show and explain the whole situation. Thought at one point you were going to go in the drink 😉
Thanks Jan x
I'm surprised that Leigh has'nt been down there for some firewood !❤
Leigh is recovering from a knee replacement, so it's a free for all!
Wow that is a huge problem. Great video showing the extent of the landslide. That path looked so slippy, glad you got back safely.
It is a massive problem. Glad you liked it 👍🏻
@@nbspudley 👍😍
Hi all I went up yesterday to move my boat on up towards hawkesbury junction I was on the visitor mooring just up the way to find lots of crt people so like lots of us back to the books thanks for the video, looks very unstable .
Unfortunately things like this are going to become all to common on the canals .
Look down any canal and you will see huge tree branches overhang canals. Which in turn are putting a huge strain on the roots of trees .
Eventually the ground around them will give way... especially in windy conditioins..
Anyway folks stay safe and well.
Agreed. Unfortunately for crt it would have probably been cheaper if they’d been proactive to secure the cutting rather than having to react to this. 🤷🏻♂️
There's been other landslips in this area. Seems to have been a lot of trees felled in places so that doesn't help as they aren't stabilising the bank anymore
@@snailhawkjust editing an update to post a little later.
I agree the massive trees catch the wind and get torn out thus initiating the slips. CRT should cut the trees down in cuttings where the banks are soft and liable to slippage.
Hi, our boat is at Rose Narrowboats for a survey (we normally moor at Brinklow Marina) - we were meant to bring her back to the marina on Thursday! So now we're stuck there for the foreseeable as this slip is very bad. Thanks for the video.
I feel for you. Could be months 😔
Well, at least we aren't living on board! Hopefully Rose will look after her wherever she's moored. Lots of long diversions for people...
Hi there.
Nice to see what it looked like before I visited to film footage for my youtube channel a week or so later.
Maybe take a look kev the Brinklow kayaker.
I'm awaiting it to be reopened to start kayaking out that way.
Rose narrow boats I bet are watching progress too.

Update email from crt 8/2/24 1700hrs -
Due to heavy rainfall, a significant landslip on an 18m high cutting has completely blocked the canal and towpath. We're working with our contractors to develop a plan to start to clear the large trees and debris from the canal. Unfortunately these works are in an awkward location, meaning it could take longer to resolve. Taking into account the popularity of the North Oxford Canal, as recently noted by our lockage reports, our priority is to re-open navigation as soon as possible.
We'll aim to provide a further update on Friday 23rd February, once our contractors have assessed the situation.
Update on 23rd of February, hardly a priority then. There should have already been a plan in place as this cutting has been unstable for over a decade.
@@Tinhare & the cost of sorting this lot is likely far more than if it had been sorted earlier.
@@nbspudley of course. Now there’s the cost of removal plus the stabilisation of the cutting. It’s both sides too which are unstable.
Crikey! That’s going to take some time to sort! 🫣 What a mess! You were brave walking along there, don’t think I would’ve done it, in case another bot went! It all looks a bit precarious!! Well done! xx
Thanks guys. Was totally aware of my surroundings all the time, listening & looking - ongoing dynamic risk assessments throughout.
❤
The landslip where those rock filled cages are took long enough to sort so i think its going to be closed for a long long time. The unstability of the rest of the cutting will probably take weeks to survey before they can even start.
Thanks for the video
Agreed. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for making this vlogg it is so interesting I remember some of the first ones on that stretch of the Oxford canal
You’re welcome. Glad you enjoyed it.
Wow what a mess! Trust us to make a tentative plan to go up to the Ashby before Crick. Back to the maps 😳
Yep - our plans are scuppered too. Time to reboot 2024 plans.
Wow that part of the canals quite a worry, what a shame ❤
Aye, scuppered our plans for when we leave marina too. Oh well, just have to potter about the area..again 😊
Yeah. I think we’ll be off the Braunston again initially then see where we go from there.
Blimey! Thats going to take a while and see what crt are saying re difficult to get to so that makes the situation worse. So glad no- one appeared to be going by at the timeit happened! X
Also good job you hadn’t taken one of your short day trips & not stuck the other side of it.
apparently they have to build a 200m road track just to get to the canal
They do. They now have permission from the land owner to do so. I have a site visit on Monday so hopefully a new vlog with more details soon. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Thats blown CRT budget for next year and boaters wonder where their licence money goes.
It hasn’t helped that’s for sure.
Wow it needs International Rescue !!
I blame HS2 😮 !!
Yeah let’s do that 👍🏻😂
Those gabions are from the last time there was a landslide there
Yeah I know they’ve been there a few years.
@@nbspudley they've also moved significantly over the last year, unless my memory is playing tricks on me
CRT will not start work until the spring.
Yeah - fully expecting it to take months.
Big problems down there. A lot of detours will be happening.
Yeah - we’re maybe thinking now of doing the Leics ring anti clockwise to get north and maybe pick up crick show on the way.
That's going to take months 😫
That’s what we thought. Having to change our plans considerably & so will many others. 🤷🏻♂️ hey ho - C’est la vie.
Our syndicate narrowboat Andante was approaching the cutting and witnessed the landslip, too close for comfort!
Blimey. That’d be a squeaky bum moment.
Can you email me please so I can message you directly.
boatersnarrow@gmail.com
Would love to know more from those people who witnessed it.
Complete waste of money & time trying to stabilise it, repair one section it will continue to move elsewhere, whole section/cutting looks very unstable.Whole section is a money pit....
Unfortunately there isn’t another option I don’t think; It’s a major route.
@@nbspudley Will cost millions to sort problem.😟 Isn't the old oxford canal route still around, that this cutting replaced, couldn't they reuse that? Prehaps make this section a tunnel, would solve landslips, a cut and cover tunnel would most likely be a cheaper option & permantly solve this very long term problem.
I was there last week and it was a massive pile of clay covering the whole canal contractors working on it all the trees have been removed but it is still a danger to public and a pump is pumping water from one side of the mound to the other.
