- In this video we attend a boat survey being done by Elliot Berry of Marsurv who had previously surveyed 3 boats for us prior to purchase & today he is surveying a potential purchase for some friends of ours; John & Sharon.
We see what surveys entail, find out about some major issues uncovered by surveys & we discuss one of our previous surveys that potentially saved us thousands of pounds & a lot of time & heartache.
Don't buy a boat without watching this!
If you enjoy our vlogs & want to contribute by buying us a coffee here's the link; www.buymeacoffee.com/Narrowbo...
but there is absolutely no pressure to do so. However it would be lovely if you would leave a comment below, like & subscribe to the channel (it's totally free of charge) as by doing these things it helps us grow the channel.
Thanks very much.

excellent and informative as always. It is so important to not only get good advice but also to listen to that advice. Remember the surveyor will be independent of the marina or owner and their job is to tell you what is right and wrong with the boat.
Absolutely 👍🏻
That was really interesting Wayne. Thanks very much. And a good illustration of the need for a full survey.
Cheers Neil 👍🏻
Gosh that's a very interesting and informative video - well worth having a survey done. Great vid 🦋
Thank you. 🙏
Totally agree with Elliot about painting the base plate. I do some internal eye rolling when some boaters use the excuses Elliot mentioned for not doing it.
Totally agree Paul. I really don’t understand why people don’t do this?

There again it depends on the canal and how deep the draft.
Anyone who has navigated the Ashby with a deep boat will know only too well about getting stuck on the mud.
Last time I was up there about a year ago there was a huge "tug" type design boat with rivets and all sorts.
Owner mentioned it was a "replica". He was taking on water just before Bosworth marina with the intention of getting up to Snarestone.
I left about 30 minutes later after watering up and he was moored about 100yds above the marina as he was too deep to go further.
He hadn't twigged just how much water he had aboard until he got stuck in the mud.
About a week or so later on my return trip he was still moored up in same spot.
So yes painting base plate might work in some instances but not all.
A light boat not drawing much in a deep canal is one thing but the reverse can be entirely different.
I suppose too that relying on just four anodes is not quite the thing.
The owner of my boat had ten anodes and I had another four fitted too as had no idea how long original anodes would last.
Plus fitted an isolation transformer instead of a galvanic isolator for when connected to shore power.
Earthing via the hull.
This allows the mains RCBs to function as designed.
So the moral of the story is that one size doesn't fit all.
👍🏻 Elliott is doing a fantastic job as usual.. you know he’s a man to trust x
We agree! How are you Ray?
Very interesting loved it thank you 😀
Thanks Karen. Glad you liked it. 👍🏻
Really interesting vlog and you guys were so right to have the full survey. Doesn’t even bare thinking about! 😱
It would have been a nightmare if Elliot hadn’t spotted it. 😢
Fab Video. Always enjoy them.
Thanks very much 🙏
Super vlog thanks so much 👍❤️
Glad you liked it Jacqueline. 😊
That was a very interesting video. I’m not familiar with this type of boat but I enjoyed watching this video very much. The couple that was buying the boat was very nice 😊 and friendly too. I hope that they are going to be happy with their boat too. Thanks for showing me what it takes to make a boat sturdy and safe.
Lovely comments as usual Della. Thank you 🙏
Brilliant vlog. An ex black prince boat. Love the upvc bow doors they use. Nice boat. 🎉
Cheers Trev 👍🏻
really really interesting info regarding what is needed to be done when thinking about buying a boat as i'm considering about starting my boating journey in the near future
Glad it helped Kevin. That was the intention from the start - not to make people worry at all but to help them consider things they’d maybe not thought of. If you need any help or advice we’re here & happy to help. 👍🏻
good vid on the channel on the cut keep up the good vids thanks lee
Cheers Lee 👍🏻
hi mason very good video very entertaining love dave
Always always add inspector fail insurance. Saw a vid a few years ago, pre-purchase inspector gave it thumbs up, she buys it, in 2 weeks bilge full, pull boat, patches on patches, basically needed a new hull below the waterline. Poor girl is freaking out, then notices for an extra 50 she had the insurance. Dunno if she fixed it or took the purchase price and moved on.
Never heard of fail insurance before
Dodged a bullet with the leaky boat.
Definitely. We’ve seen it on the cut a couple of times since passing us.
What would have been your first boat looked amazing - wow what a good job the hole was spotted! Hope whoever decided to buy it had a survey too! Great and very informative video thanks, I really wish we had insisted on having the base plate painted!
What are anodes & what they do please?
Good question Debra. Click the link & it should answer your questions. 👍🏻

Oh! Makes sense! Thank you.
All good buddy. Thank you. Still going through it with the other twat. Still. lol x
Flipping eck 🤦🏻♂️
Lucky Elliot was inquisitive.
Yep it's a walk away job.
Boats are problematic guaranteed
It is David. Saved us for sure.
Who pays for the survey
Hi Trevor, it’s the buyer who pays for the survey. Usually in the region of £1000 for the lift out of the water & the survey. If you don’t then buy it unfortunately it’s lost monies. Usually if there are issues found that need fixing then the buyer can try to negotiate with the seller to get them to have them fixed & you pay the agreed price or offer less based on the costs for the remedial work & you get it done then once purchased.
@@nbspudley well worth doing thanks for the reply
It needs to be the buyer. Also the buyer should not take any recommendations from the broker, or seller. Even though most surveyors are fairly ethical, there are some who are “bought” by the promise of repeat business through brokers. As a buyer you do not want any conflict of interest.
@@captratty2167 agreed. We didn’t ask for any recommendations for a surveyor from the seller/broker. We found our own & if you know someone who used them themselves & were happy even better.
