    I would recommend to anybody who had the resources and desire to hook up more than 4 subs to get their sound system professionally calibrated. You just may find out once your system is calibrated correctly you might not need or even want more subs. I had mine calibrated and yeah it wasn't cheap ($800) for mine. But ,wow! Is what a serious game changer for me! I had always been discouraged with my system until I had it calibrated. Other systems ,even cheaper ones seem to always sound better than mine. I was seriously frustrated! It's just one of those things you will keep putting off but once you do it your so happy you did! Anyways that's my 2 cents worth of advice....

    Another simplistic option if you have a LOT of subs is to turn off the crossover in your processor and run everything full range. Connect a sub to each channel (assuming your sub has a built in crossover) and your done. There are other options for subwoofer integration concepts/ technology your viewers may not have considered. Vandersteen subwoofers work in a completely different way than most. They blend perfectly to ANY system because of how they are connected, and calibrated. Youthman, if you are interested I have a Vandersteen theater setup if you want to make another stop up to Wisconsin/Madison area. Its a mix of Audio Research, Emotiva, Meridian, NAD, Peachtree Audio, Furman, and Auidoquest. All the theaters that you have sampled are in homes where the owner is in charge. I believe a good portion of your viewers rent instead of own. This system can demonstrate what you can do if you don't own the property. IF interested contact your buddy Rad. He knows who I am. You wont be disappointed :)

    For years I tried running two mismatched subwoofers in my room with just using the two pre-outs on my AVR, and every time it was a negative result, so I always want back to just 1 sub... but now that I have the mini DSP 2x4 HD and a calibrated microphone, I was able to use the second sub to fix a null and flatten out the response in less than an hour! I have used a lot of y-adapters in my day to connect multiple subs and never noticed a problem. The speakers B system and daisy chaining are other possibilities. The most I have hooked up in one room has been four subwoofers and one amplifier driving some tactile transducers (necessitated by a concrete floor). Still had no problem. If someone wants more subwoofers than this, I would recommend beefier subs rather than more. Run a test tone with a sound level meter, and you will probably find that you are already overdoing it. Too much low bass can degrade lifelikeness.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 2 lety +1

      That’s exactly what I did in my setup. The reality is XLR isn’t going to innately make your system sound better. Yes you get about 3dB gain. If you have long runs to your subs, it can be good if RCA produces noise. Other than that, there really isn’t any “downgrade” by going to RCA. The pluses the miniDSP 2x4HD far outweigh any negatives RCA might have

      @@Youthman Well I guess we´re both right on our different approaches and views. For me I´d much rather have the benefits of balanced connection on both ends. Not just for the added gain, that can be done with the volume control. But for the complete lack of humming and buzzing regardles of the volume. You on the other hand want the benefits of complete control of the low end via an extra layer of calibration software/hardware. I have 4 subs in my system, but not wired to the extent of what the video is about. I wanted "WEIGHT" and balance in my system. Just having a front left and right sub had me feeling my system was "front heavy" with bass. One of the most important places I NEEDED a sub was on the center channel. My system is 50/50 music/movies. Center channel dialogue in movies needed beef in voices. Concert videos needed bottom end in center to compete with left and right. The Eagles' When Hell Freezes Over has the kick drum and bass mixed to the center channel. It just made sense to me to put a sub on the center channel. I have a "Y" adapter on center with one side going to sub and the other going to amp for speaker. I also have the rear surrounds with a "Y" adapter. There's noticeable bass from the rears on movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner 2049 AND there's this incredible bass note at the end of The Invisible Man (2020). Having EACH channel locked down with a sub added much more to my setup. I'm VERY happy with the balance and "WEIGHT" of bass in my system.

    I am trying to figure out. How many subwoofers can do Atmos justice? I know sub woofers produce bass, but do I need 4 vs 2 subwoofers, I mean I have a decent sized room, that I will be plugging into a Denon a1h, after that releases, assuming it’s worth its cost. I am coming from an integra 5.4, think, as well…

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před rokem +1

      One JTR subwoofer will “do Atmos justice” if you only have a single seat. With multiple seats, you want to have multiple subwoofers throughout your room to help smooth out the bass response.

    I got a Marantz SR5011 with Subwoofer 1 and 2 out on the back.
    Do you only use a miniDSP if you use three or more subs? If I add a second sub to my system - is it overkill to connect a miniDSP to each of the sub out’s?

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 2 lety +1

      It’s never overkill. The mini DSP allows you to time a line both of your subwoofers and EQ them

      No, you plug in the laptop to run REW, set delays, add EQ, time align, then save those settings to the miniDSP (which does stay on and connected at all times, but you do not have to keep your computer plugged in.

      I’ve never tried it but Technically you probably could do that and be ok as far as connectivity. The problem is is the two subs that are on the same output are not stacked (meaning in the same location), it won’t do you any good because you need to be able to EQ and time align each sub based on their location in the room

  • @FatFolksProductions

    I'm actually looking at the mini dsp HD. My question is in regards to the inputs on the back. Almost every video I see on how to use set it up only uses one input. When and why would I use that second input. My AVR's sub outputs are individual. Can I run those into each of the dsp's inputs? So confused on this 😕

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 2 lety

      That is a great question. Since there is only one LFE channel, I have not found a reason to use more than one input connected to an AVR. The only reason you have two sub outs on an AVR is so you can adjust their levels independently in your AVR and ease of connecting two subs. The miniDSP does that plus soooooo much more.

If that happens, that’s illegal due to the whole “No purchase necessary.” There are some that are global, some that are US and Canada, some that are US and EU and some that are US only.

More subs does not mean more base, it might mean a bit more balance but do you want to spend thousands on subs that make very little difference or a nicer projector and speakers. Just saying two subs for most home theaters is more than enough IMO. Anything more is just about pointless. The base you get out of a movie is not changing with with more subs.
