    2003 curb was 2840, 240 hp, 162 lb/ft. CR had the same power output as other AP2s. The significant mechanical differences is some weight loss (softtop delete), stiffener for the steering rack (quicker ratio too), 6 point brace under the tonneau, and the suspension rates.

    • @kalmtraveler
      @kalmtraveler Před rokem

      isn't the steering ratio the same as AP1's, as well as both sway bars thickness? Like they sort of combined the best of both versions (from a track car perspective) to make the CR?

    The only thing folks need to know is that 20+ years in, Honda’s rivals are *just* starting to make cars that is as good or better than the S2000.
    When this car first came out it had higher specific output than a Ferrari, and pretty much better then every car in the same price point / segment in all objective measure.
    The same period Porsche Boxster (986) was heavier, slower, and looks (and aged) far worse is pretty telling.
    But seriously if you compare sports car today you can buy for around $30k, the S2k still compares favorably… against new cars with 2 decades of engineering refinement.
    That’s how far ahead of its time it was. Peak 90s JDM sports car design. Back when they were basically heads above everything else that’s out there.
    Overrated and overpriced? Perhaps. Certainly if you’re just looking for fun performance cars there are MANY cheaper (or better) options out there these days. For the same amount of money that people are asking for a mint AP2 you can get yourself into a 987 Porsche Cayman / Boxster, some older M3s, WRXs, heck even a C6. The S2K is best viewed and enjoy as a period piece, kind of like watching vintage movies. It does deserves a special place in automotive history and for its time, it was a best in class experience. 90s Honda / Acura’s have a certain “feel” that no other car makers (including themselves) were able to replicate since. S2K represents the best and last example of that.

    AP1s have a lot of advantages over the AP2s. For example, the AP1 rear diff is stonger and the AP1 has larger diameter oil squirters in the cylinder walls. 9k is a beautiful sound. Springs and retainers will take it to 10k and the loss in torque is not necessarily a bad thing cuz spinning ain't winning. I'd take the AP1 over the AP2 every time IMO. Slap a craftwerks supercharger on that motor and make 500 hp. Bilstien makes great coilovers whenever you need replacements. Great vid, loved it!! Bananas....

    • @fokker1138
      @fokker1138 Před 3 lety +4

      AP1 differential is not the stronger diff, but neither are tanks. If you abuse them, they will break. The oil jets are the same part number; what was changed part way through 2002 was the bolts and those are the same part number for all years going forward. There's no benefit to running it north of 9K unless you autox and even then, the gearing/engine speed makes it unnecessary (~65mph at the end of 2nd). Spend some time on the S2Ki forums.

      @@fokker1138 Just speaking from experience here. My apologies. The part numbers may be the same now, as Honda changes actual parts with innovation and technology. So parts in 02 are not the same as parts in 21 regardless of the current part number (e.g. J series oil squirters replaced AP1 original squirters). Motors are glorified air compressors. The more RPM you generate, the more HP you produce. So absolutely there are ample gains in springs and retainers (the factory AP1 cam will make power to 10k RPM, obviously a more aggressive cam (e.g. Brian Crower or Skunk2 tuner 2s) will make more power with equal RPM regardless of racing class or genre. Graduated from the S2Ki forums with a bachelor's and posted a few stickies to boot. Thanks for the reccomendation.

    Depends, I love mine but think it’s a highly overrated and overpriced car. The thing is fun in twists but dangerous bc it oversteers and snaps on you. In order for you to hit any amount of torque, you have to get in high 6’s so from 1500-6k RPMs you are as slow or slower than a civic. The hp # is impressive. A viper per liter has less horsepower than the S2k but it’s not that thrilling. If you want to deal with real power take the $20-$28k some assfuck wants for his ‘02 or ‘04 with 70-200k miles and purchase a Factory Five AC Cobra. Trust me, you’ll have more fun it that than the S2k. This coming from a guy who has an S2k.

      I haven’t experienced this oversteer snap sensation yet thankfully, I run mine through the canyons regularly so I think that’s just a big matter of driving style. But you are right about the overhype, it is an awesome car but the internet has overhyped it quite a bit. But I’m sure it’s the same situation with say a non built skyline/FD/S15 etc. But would you say getting the S2000 was worth it? Or would you have rather spent the money elsewhere

      @@ChrisSadowski I think its worth it if you are buying the car at a reasonable price. I saw one guy paying 25K with 200K miles. Hey i know it sounds like I am shit talking the S, its an amazing vehicle, and its perfectly balanced.

    Get a Honda del aol has better gas mileage and in my opinion looks better plus more trunk space

      I had a del sol for a couple years. Absolute garbage heap of a car compared to an S2000. Half the power, FWD, loosest/most twisting chassis I’ve ever driven. Love the interior but del sols are super low budget, poor man s2000’s

    • @ChrisSadowski
      @ChrisSadowski  Před 2 lety

      Honestly I would not bother with the del sol. Mostly because of part availability, targa seals always leak and just how flimsy the chassis is. I would 100% suggest a Miata if you want a roadster. Best car ever for the price

    AP2 owner. They’re great cars but horrible as a daily driver and not practical. Only recommend if you can afford it to be a total toy.

      Better is a matter of opinion really. There is faster cars yes, but for what you are getting I think it’s really worth it as a driving enthusiast. If your a weekend warrior or a stance guy of course the car isn’t worth it. But you won’t really get such a good driving car, with its good power and incredible handling and driver feel nowadays for the same price. It still has the classic Honda driving feel but with a modern touch whereas new sports cars are just fast and so lifeless and disconnected from the driving experience.

      No not really. I sold my turbo Miata to buy the S2000, it’s a great car don’t get me wrong I love miatas still. But the S2000 is just a much better, more refined Miata. More reliable, twice the power, extremely rigid chassis, better comfort, still easy to work on
