  • What should you wear when you're doing a track day? Do you really need a racing suit and what items of clothing should you avoid? Today on Cash vs Trash we find out with info from our expert!
In this new series, we'll get an expensive intake system, and a home made system, then get an expert to decide. Along the way, one car will modified with loads of cash, and the other one will be modified with parts found from dumpster diving, recyclers, second hand parts or the cheapest parts we can find.

Hope you's go more into the differences of a motorcycle helmet compared to a car helmet on the second channel. Great video, something additional to remember is that safety is a system and you need the whole system for it to be effective. It is an all or nothing approach, for the utmost safety you need the full suit, gloves, shoes, helmet and HANS however you also need the supporting hardware like a cage, full containment seat, harnesses, fire systems and stripped interior.
Another important note is on the difference between DOT or motorcycle helmets and SNELL or FIA rated helmets. Firstly the helmets are designed for multiple impacts against a roll cage, where as a motorcycle helmet is designed for impacts with pavement and a slide. Secondly the fireproof materials are very important and not always part of a DOT helmet.

I have heard a lot of tracks in Europe require cotton or hemp, long pants/jeans and long sleeved shirt or polo neck. Polyester is a quick way to get denied access to the track and it makes perfect sense.
In the 90's when those hideous neon tracksuits were a thing, some kid on a camp at my high school caught a stray cinder from the camp fire and his whole leg caught on fire in an instant. Even with a cotton mesh under the polyester he had serious burns and a very unpleasant month or so of recovery. I have not worn pure polyester since seeing that, what a nightmare.

I've yet to see someone mention this when discussing safety equipment but at a sanctioned race event you will have a safety marshal at every post, and ERT on standby so the time it takes for someone to come help you after a crash is minimized. But at your average track day you are sometimes lucky to get anyone to volunteer at the lookouts. If you have a serious crash on the back end of a track it can take ages before someone will actually get to you to help. You are better off having all your safety equipment on at a track day if you can afford it.

The boots I think need more attention other than the fireproofing.
I usually drive with my shoes off, you get so much more pedal feeling and movement with them off, but obviously its not as safe as wearing shoes, especially on the track.
A racing boot is much lighter and thinner than a pair of regular shoes so it should retain much more of that extra pedal feel through your feet. that extra sensory information of feeling what the car is doing through the pedals is extremely helpful when driving fast.

The important differences between a bike and a car helmet, is where the front face shield/opening is and the rear where the helmet ends- on a bike, you are expected to be at most sat upright, but more likely leaning slightly forwards with your head leaning backwards, so you look up out of the helmet and you need more space a the back so the helmet doesn't dig into your spine; whereas with a car, you are at most going to be upright, but more likely leaning backwards, so the opposite to the bike you will be looking slightly downwards out of the visor and need the rear to come further down to protect where your head is most likely to be.

I know its Cash vs Trash, but would've been nice to point out that you dont need to spend $3,500 to get a full set of racegear. You can get helmet + hans, suit, glove and boots for a bit over $2,100 AUD. Informative episode for sure, but I hope there is one on MCMTV2 that goes a bit more in depth about the differences between gear EG motorcycle helmets being basically one impact use vs motorsport that can handle being banged around a bit more etc.

I always see a lot of comments by guys doing track days saying "oh my car is stock" or "im only going out for a few laps. Its not a competition day" when it comes to things like race suits and hans devices etc. Fire/crashes dont know what type of car you drive or what the set up of the day is. They dont discriminate. A couple thousand dollars in safety gear vs your life/permanent damage doesnt weigh up. Safety all day!

I live by one statement "I like my skin" I wear nomex underwear under the nomex FIA race suit as an extra layer which may buy you 2 - 3 more seconds. 2 people burnt to death late last year after hitting a tree competing in the races we do. Since I believe this was USD only, gives opportunity to visit new lands to explore etc, and then import a 9-2 and do a RHD conversion if possible, as I am also certain that many are potentially curious how to do a LHD -> RHD conversions etc.

A lot of people don’t understand what drives the requirement for a suede covered wheel when using race gloves. Gloves give very little grip on a normal wheel, that is why most racing cars have a suede wheel, bare hands grip best on a smooth wheel like leather, vinyl, plastic.

Nowadays I only wear them at home with my sim rig.
Edit; I quickly realised they are a pain to wear in everyday life, even if you mostly walk to and from your car, cause the soles are so thin. Hence why they collected dust in a closet til i got the sim rig.

stock air box has that long piping that is calibrated to increase power by creating drag on intake system, same as the exhaust system creates back pressure. when you switched to a k and n filter you eliminated that piping that was built into the stock air box. this opened the flow of air and removed the drag, that decreased power. now if you had kept an intake pipe, in similar size to the oem length and diameter but replaced the intake filter with the k & N one, then you would more then likley have seen the gains in HP you were looking for.
marty didnt loose power because he had an intake pipe befoer his filter which allowed him to see an increase over oem instead of a decrease. buy a k&N intake pipe for your car and install it along with your k&N intake filter and you will see the results you crave.

Simpson HANS device is cheaper and more comfortable than the Stand 21 type Moog got. Race boots will also not get tangled around the pedals like runners, and give way better pedal feel. Gloves are something you didn't know you wanted until you have (and drive in) them. Balaclava is a no brainer because in addition to the fire safety aspect, IT soaks up the sweat from your head instead of it soaking into the lining of your $900 helmet and wrecking it.

Showing up to a Sunday track meet in a largely stock, yellow Suzuki Swift, wearing colormatched pro safety gear. Yup, you're definitely being that guy! 🤣
On a more serious note, if your car is stock, fire is not really much of an issue since you can still get out of the car easily. The danger in that case comes if you flip your car, and in that case i'd rather have a full cage and proper seat rather than that yellow suit, they cost almost equally as much after all.
Here in Sweden a lot of guys just race in Blåkläder, fire retardant working clothes, made for welding in and such.

Somewhere I have a custom fitted Hinchman driving suit. Back when it wasn't much more than the cheapest fire suits. Single layer, Nomex, worn over (Marty! tip here!) surplus Mil-Surp nomex long underwear. A guy I knew drove a lot of his career in oilfield coveralls(local dirt racing. Rules were "Must be fire resistant") because they were provided by his job and nomex (single layer a bit thinner than the Hinchman). Check a Surplus place for Mil or Fire Brigade stuff. You don't need full Bunker Gear, but often the shirts and pants are aramid fire resistant stuff.
And I doubt i could get that Hinchman over my fat arse now-a-days. I'm well past the fit and trim 170 lbs I was back then.

I recently outfitted myself with FIA certified racing gear for wheel to wheel racing in the USA. There's obviously in between the two examples here. I spent about 1/2 of what Moog did. It's still expensive, and Hans devices cost what they cost, but FIA-approved shoes, helmets and race suits can be had for much less. Also, it's worth noting that Hans devices are made to use with racing harnesses and NOT traditional street car seatbelts.
