I share my income over the past 6 months to show how much I have made as an online English tutor on Cambly Kids. Please keep in mind that there may be many different factors which could make you earn more or less. This is just to share my experience!

    I just got accepted to tutor adults on Cambly. I retired not too long ago and look forward to it being a way I can almost "volunteer" to help others since the pay is not great. I must say I am really impressed with the amount of sheer effort you put into your work and know it must be quite tiring but rewarding too.Good for you and I hope that you will keep helping others in your unique manner. By the way, I think some of the best teachers do not need degrees or certificates. It is a matter of understanding the subject well and communicating this understanding to others.

    I've been with Cambly 2 weeks now and love it. I have worked for and been recruited by companies that pay more. Some are so controlling and limited. You spend your teaching time worried if gave enough rewards, used all the gizmos on the platform etc. It really affects your teaching. I love the freedom and the variety of students. The pay is not the best. However, the flexibty and experience supercedes that. I am still in brick and mortar school until June 8, then I am done! Not going back. Planning on making Cambly my job.

    Hi Kylie, thanks for sharing. I have a question about taxes. I recognize you are located in the UK and so taxes would be different with the US, but how much did you need to pay at the end of the year? You said your hourly rate was about 8pounds an hour, what would you estimate that would be with taxes taken out? Thanks for your help! I'm signed up but a bit reluctant to start if in the end the hourly rate is so low.

    • @Betweenengland
      @Betweenengland  Před 3 lety +6

      Due to my crazy circumstances last year (the uk tax year running April to April and me starting as self employed in July...midway through the tax year), I ended up paying no tax on the $10000 I claimed. In the UK we can earn nearly £13,000 before we have to pay tax. I voluntarily paid £100 for my national insurance (which contributes towards healthcare and pension) but that’s it. I just think that I’m also spending zero in commuting costs which saves money too.

      I mainly teach 5-6yr olds...so it’s very much teaching phonics, letters, cat, hat, rat type English. Some of the higher levels look a little into grammar but it’s aimed at beginners and very easy to flick through and remind yourself. It focuses more on conversational English. I have 7yrs experience in PreK so that’s my ‘specialty’. I think on the adult side you can sometimes get more grammar type questions, but not so much on CK :)

    Hi Kylie. Can you choose your students ie male or female?

    • @Betweenengland
      @Betweenengland  Před 3 lety

      Hmm good question. If you sign up for a priority hour which could be adults or kids, you are expected to answer every call that comes your way so you could have both. My experience is with kids so I don’t do these particular hours because I’m not great teaching adults! With the kids course, they book and choose you. I guess you could write it in your profile but there’s no guarantee that they will read your profile. I am a girl and I find that many of my students are girls, there are just a handful of my regulars that are boys. You can cancel a booking if you don’t think you are a good fit, but too many cancellations can result in being told off by Cambly. When you open your schedule you are saying you are available so if you start cancelling it then looks bad! From the students end as soon as the reserve a spot, it’s theirs and confirmed, regardless of if you ‘accept’ it. Hope this helps!

    @anuskagiri746 Před 3 lety

    Do they pay for priority hours if we pre schedule it?

    • @Betweenengland
      @Betweenengland  Před 3 lety

      For priority hours you get a guaranteed pay of 15 minutes (30 minutes if you sign up to a peak slot). However Cambly Kids can only reserve during a PH, so if they happen to not turn up you are expected to still answer every call that comes your way during the priority hour and it’s mainly adults.

    And your employer is not paying you social security or holiday pay, or sick pay so you earned a lot less than the minimum. • @Betweenengland
      @Betweenengland  Před 2 lety +10

      Your right, I could earn more in McDonald’s but I wouldn’t have the job satisfaction, freedom and work life balance that working on CK gives me. A lot of people doing it are stay at home mum’s etc. When I was living in the US and working in an elementary school my annual income was a lot less than my Cambly income. I wasn’t paid any holiday...the 12 weeks a year that school was closed was unpaid, I had to pay to commute and drive to the school, I had to pay $500 a month in health insurance etc. Now I’m back in the UK and working from home it’s great. I can technically teach from anywhere if I wanted to. We also don’t pay tax in the UK unless we reach $17500. I also have a blog which makes up the rest of my income so that pays for my time off as that’s a passive income but I understand that not others have that.

    • @Betweenengland
      @Betweenengland  Před 3 lety

      Hello! I find that to get reliable and consistent regulars it’s best to have similar times and days, especially if you want it as a full time job (like I use it for) but you don’t have to do this! You can open slots whenever you want but it may just be different students you see each lesson as some, like yourself, prefer to have lessons when they have time rather than a set routine. My schedule is set to 24hr notice, so if I have an open slot it has to be booked more than 24hrs in advance. The smallest is 6hrs in advance, for example you may wake up in the morning and decide to open some evening slots, but you will have to consider the time zones...such as some evening slots may catch Korean mornings for example, but 6hrs in advance would put them in bed so they won’t be booking lessons. They have more chance of filling the further in advance you can open them, for example opening them on the Sunday for a Wednesday and Thursday, the following week you might open Tuesday and Friday. It’s up to you! There’s also Priority Hours where Cambly Kids can book 2hrs in advance but then you may also have to teach adults during this time. PH is also dependent on rates and tutor demand, so they aren’t always available unless you reserve them up to 3 weeks in advance.

Keep in mind that both the parents and the students may watch the video so make it 'fun' and engaging. You won't be able to tutor with your kids in the background. You'll have to make sure you are in a quiet space and that you shouldn't be disturbed while teaching (you can be told off by Cambly if they interrupt lessons and it's not fair on the person paying you to teach them). Can I teach math there?

      Not on the kids side no. There are maths and counting activities, I often use counting games to encourage forming sentences but the majority is conversation based. You could always try the adult side and advertise that you specialise in maths, you might get someone looking for that type of direction?

    Is 27 seconds for an intro vid too short?

    • @Betweenengland
      @Betweenengland  Před 2 lety +1

      Hmm I think mine is about 40 seconds. As long as you feel you’ve got everything across that you want to, sometimes short and sweet works fine :) With the Intro video you are able to change that as often as you want. So you could always try it and if you’re not having a lot of luck attracting students upload another one at a later date!
