  • Fort Carroll was built in the 1800's to protect Baltimore from enemy ships coming up the Chesapeake Bay. It has been abandoned for decades. The Fort has a hexagonal layout with a thick outer wall and a larger inner "courtyard" that has been thickly overgrown with plants.
There is only one entryway to get in through the outer wall.

This was the coolest place to "play" when I was a kid! I grew up in Orchard Beach just a short boat ride south of our fort. The boys in the neighborhood had small boats so we would ride out to the fort and hang out.
At the time the Guard Dog sign was still visible at the entrance and the partial pier/dock was dangerous but we didn't notice. We would tie up the boat and stay for hours!
The lighthouse was standing, below the lighthouse and the grassy area was the place to be. We would go into the lower part of the fort and hide in the ports (not sure of the terminology) where the cannons would have been fired from.
It was a lot of fun. Too bad I didn't think of pictures.
Curiosity got the best of me and years ago before the internet I had to research the history of this playground and it was worth the effort. It’s too bad this fort wasn't preserved.

Nice choice of footwear for such an adventure.
Fort Carroll was upgraded in the 1890's as a network of several fortifications for the defense of Baltimore; Ft Howard, Ft Smallwood, Ft Armistead; all still exists in various states of neglect. None ever fired a shot in anger.

I agree with others, for someone who says in the video they have explored abandoned buildings and structures for 10 years, you sure do not go prepared. No flashlights. No boots. Sandals provide the least protection, you may have well just gone barefoot. Snakes and spiders love bare feet, they can read your heat signature from ten feet away. Why on earth would anyone go exploring and not take a flashlight and hiking boots. I'd bet a shiny new dime you did not bother taking sustainable food or a rescue flare either. It's just foolish and irresponsible. Love the videos, but man... take some precautions to protect yourself... crap happens. No leather gloves? I doubt you even sprayed for mosquitoes and fleas, you know, those little creatures that have killed millions of humans?

Christ, have you ever even left your house? You make it sound like a trip through a front yard might be the death of you without a full first aid kit and a cell phone with 911 on speed dial...

You have no idea who you are talking to. I've done more exploring than most people in two lifetimes. When young, I believe the part of the brain that controls survival mode is the last to develop, which is why the military selects recruits right out of High School. I was a private pilot at age 23, same year got certified PADI/NASDS Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver, I produced the longest powerless raft expedition in US history. I've explored many nooks and crannies in hundreds of cities, towns and hamlets in 47 of the 50 states and five foreign countries, kissed a Diamondback Rattlesnake in Valley of Fire at age 25, but at 62, I have experienced enough to know at some point it catches up with you and regardless of how cautious you are, as humans we make mistakes in judgement. As I made walking my son's German Shephard/Coyote mix, when I had just told my wife to make sure she kept her eyes on the ground while walking the dog, we were in Amarillo, TX and in snake country. The dog would not go to the bathroom, so I took the dog and walked exactly the same path 4 minutes later in reverse and the dog smelled fire ants on the left and as soon as she turned her head to the right, a five foot Rattlesnake with fangs 1 3/4 inches apart bit her on the nose and killed her. Had the dog not turned right, the snake would have bitten me, my next step was to be right where the snake was. SHIT HAPPENS! I've been shot at! I've had knifes pulled on me. At 17, a San Dan in Shotokan Karate and Si Hing in Jow Ga Gung Fu, I was attacked by a former friend and ended up putting him in the hospital with crushed bowels, a punctured stomach and 10 inches of his large intestines had to be removed. My wife of 44 years and I when we were 20, explored an abandoned mine in Goodsprings, NV only to find out after 18 hours of constant walking that we had gone thousands of feet down/laterally in a mine that had been abandoned since 1886, the Yellow Jacket Mine. Light goes out... you die. I've ridden a motorcycle off a cliff and survived, but two years ago a young military soldier passed me doing 80 mph on a 25 mph curve at Echo Bay, NV, he did not see the patch of loose sand, went off the 80 foot cliff and died on impact face down in the dirt. MY CONCERN IS NOT FEAR OR LACK OF EXPERIENCE... IT FROM 62 YEARS OF TWO LIFETIMES OF EXPERIENCE that helps me understand how fragile life is. dizeman.com dizeman.com/bio dizeman.com/rock&Roll dizeman.com/thisnthat dizeman.com/glamour Oh yeah, I almost forgot, in 1980, probably before you were born, I rafted the Yellowstone, Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. dizeman.com/yre/SCAN0122-3.jpg dizeman.com/yre/SCAN0123-2.jpg So, the answer is... YES! I GET OUT OF HE HOUSE AND HAVE DONE FAR MORE THAN MOST EVER DREAM OF. ----- Now this is where you tell me you don't give a shit, but YOU DID ASK! ----------- I suspect now you will take the typical route... it's okay for you to rag on my ass, but somehow it will be found offensive or meaningless that I corrected your error. My Bio doesn't even mention my morning at the MGM FIRE NOV. 21, 1980, but you can read about that DAY I LEFT THE HOUSE as well. dizeman.com/mgm_fire/

On vacation in Sarawak on the Borneo Island, our guides decided we needed a walk in rain forest, to see iridescent butterflies, wild orchids and little waterfalls. When one goes on holiday in a hot country, it doesn't occur to pack closed shoes, so I was on the little narrow trail in open sandals with the biggest damned ants I've ever seen. Luckily we were walking fast enough so I didn't get bitten. I hate to think what it would be like, if I had. Needless to say, our guide, a Dayak wore a sarong and was barefoot!
