- Have you driven over the Key Bridge and asked yourself, “What is that crazy little island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay?” It’s Fort Carroll and the subject of today’s Five Minute Histories video! Join us on the water as we get as close as possible to the island with the help of the Downtown Sailing Center’s Elizabeth Truong. Elizabeth expertly captained our boat while talking with us about the Downtown Sailing Center. Thanks for watching and see you soon!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." We record short videos about different historic places all over Baltimore and post them on our Facebook page, CZcams channel, and website. For more information or to become a member of Baltimore Heritage, check out: baltimoreheritage.org/support/
What a difference a year, or a few minutes, makes.
Leonard Washington! How has your life turned out since your episode of Trading Spouses?
while in the US Coast Guard in the 70's we patrolled by the fort every day twice a day. Actually had the Bosun pull the patrol boat up and let me get off one time. looked around the fort, unremarkable except the trees and brush was much less. The guard dog warning was not there.
I remember a few decades ago somebody got the idea of putting a Casino out there. Around that time the politicians were still debating the legalizing of Gambling in the state. It sounded like a good idea but was just another one that went away.
Very interesting!
Never knew it even existed..very interesting. As many times as I’ve crossed the bridge never noticed. I saw a drone film clip but it must have been in the winter as there was no greenery, everything was dead and I wondered about that. Now I see it’s full of greenery.
I like Broening idea
🎉
The most peaceful fort
I read at one time it was going to be a casino
Fort Carroll is in the Patapsco River. The Patapsco River feeds into the Chesapeake Bay.
How much does it cost to take a tour with the sailing center?? They should turn the island fort into a nature park with some trails, something like Hart-Miller Island.
Too dangerous, due to rats, lots and lots of bird droppings inches thick, and finally it is a bird roost and off limits during nesting season.
Can you take a tour around the island (like Johns did) for some photography?
@@emmamiddleton7654 Of course, one just has to keep a distance from the island, not wanting to disturb the nesting birds and in the water hazards to boats.
Omg MD turn it into a waterfowl reserve
I would def oat to go out and see that
Eppler Rulez!
I think a good use would be under ground bunker shelters, it didn't appear that the birds lived underground, they could have their above ground habitat. Limited access to the island is ideal
Why not talk about how it was built? like is it coming from the bottom of the lake or is it being held in place like a boy or something? I mean More could’ve came from this video or how it was built
