  • The striking tower of the Lord Baltimore Hotel is one of the signature elements of Baltimore’s skyline. For today’s Five Minute Histories, we look back at this historic building, which has outlasted many of its hotel competitors. Thanks for joining us!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Twice a week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and website. For more information or to become a member of Baltimore Heritage, check out: baltimoreheritage.org/support/

My husband and I were able to get a room in the Lord Baltimore Hotel during the 1970 blizzard!
We both worked in the city and could not get home to Baltimore county!
Amazingly we got a beautiful room and the staff was gracious and accommodating!
We were recently married and it was a second honeymoon for us!

My father worked the front desk during the early to mid 70s. Apparently, It was still the place to be at that time. A hotel stay was so different than taday.

I went on a tour through this building 2 years ago. The tour was part of the Open Doors Tours program which allows you to take tours through most of the buildings in Baltimore for a weekend. The tour takes you through most parts of the hotel including the 5 story tower. The tour guide tells you the history of each area of the hotel as you go through the tour. There are penthouse suites in the tower, and there's a patio on the roof at the tower's base so you can see the tower up close. The tour tells some haunted history as well.

I've just discovered your channel. Its great seeing these videos on Baltimores history. It's a shame the city has demolished so many of its historic buildings.

I had heard that the top of the Tower Building was saved for possible re-use in a new building. I wonder if that is still true.

The elements of the tower building clock and some architectural details were saved by a judge in the Circuit Court. He was a clock fan. The judge passed away before he could provide for the clock faces to be re-erected. I believe the parts were sold at auction.
