Apart from being a phenom straight out of the gate, R9 lost 2 years of his career and returned to dominate the world cup and deliver greatness no matter what condition he was in, as long as he was on the pitch. His performance against Rio was one of the best at OT by an away player in my lifetime.
Also Serie A has been one of the best leagues for much of the past 100 years, & with 4 World Cups Italy have been a mammoth player in world football, and we’ve had no better player than Roberto Baggio, who was our best player in three competing world cups and delivered 18 years of greatness in what was the best league. In 29 games against the great milan team he had 8gls & 6ast, despite largely being the underdog. He had 439 goal involvements in 604 games in an elite defensive league. Also from Italy, Pirlo is absolutely top tier, Cannavaro, Baresi, Maldini, Zoff & Buffon. When you preview Italy for the Euro’s feel free to drop me an invite and I’ll be happy to give you an informed Italian perspective.

Baggio is CRIMINALLY underrated. Right up there in the same bracket as Zidane for me. Did such an incredible job at smaller teams, carried Italy in 1994 and just missed out on a World Cup. But it once again brings the point that it's not all about goal and assist stats, it's about watching them play. He was just a joy to watch.

Cruyff v Zidane for better manager/player…. No disrespect to Zidane, but Johan Cruyff is above this category… he’s more than a manager and a player… he is probably the single most important person in football over the past 50 years… he basically created modern football and shaped the way it is played now… and he was implementing the tactics we eulogise about today with Pep etc in the early 90’s… what he did for Holland, Ajax and Barcelona in shaping their DNA goes way above and beyond anything Zidane has achieved… and that includes winning the World Cup…
And correct me if I’m wrong, didn’t Cruyff also win 3 European Cups on the bounce in the early 70’s as a player?
