  • Welcome to a brand new show on the channel, FIVE FORMATIONS! Today, Rio and Culture Cams go back to 2011 for the UCL Final at Wembley between Manchester United and Barcelona. We were witnessing possibly the best Man Utd team Sir Alex Ferguson had assembled and potentially the best Spanish Club team in the new era of football in Barcelona. The Spaniards went on to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Pedro, David Villa & Messi after Rooney equalised for United. The guys discuss players mindsets, Barcelona’s iconic midfield, lessons learnt from the final and more! Was it the Lionel Messi final? Let us know what you and which other games you would like to see us analyse in the future.

It’s crazy how you can have a midfield trio at the heart of the Spanish dominance, winning Euros 2x and a World Cup. Then you add Messi, who singlehandedly carried a poor Argentina team to multiple copa America finals and a World Cup final 😂🤯 once in a life time. But Hot take: I still feel Guardiola made Xavi-Iniesta-Busi better than they were since under Rijkard, prime aged Xavi and Iniesta were sitting on the bench of the ‘06 final and weren’t first team regulars.

The difference from 2009 to this final was the fact barca went to another level that year. They demolished Madrid 5-0 in the classico and beat them in the semi final. I saw that our defenders struggled with their positioning, since the CBs had no one to mark and the fullbacks are so wide. That's uncomfortable and too much distance to cover. This style of play can be adopted by any nation. When I was a youngster in Rotterdam, our coach/manager told us: keep the ball and the goal will come.
It was an absolute pleasure playing in Holland, unfortunately my parents brought me to Scotland aged 14 just after my 14th birthday. And life was alien to me here, i never recovered or could find a club to give me what Holland gave me. I was winning titles and getting to finals. Even tough i wasn't completely happy playing center back I dominated in that position.

8:00 to 8:55 sums up what Sir Alex should have gone with. Stick to what this United team was great at - that is play in a mid block and hit teams on the counter and have Scholes/Carrick controlling the midfield with a third midfielder being a runner (Park or Hargreaves from 08 or Fletcher). Instead Sir Alex played with Giggs and Anderson in 09 and Giggs and Carrick in 2011 which was suicidal in midfield.
I’m sure if United had played their regular 4-3-3 / 4-5-1 shape they played in the 08 campaign and 09 campaign - they would have won the 09 final on the counter.

Would also be nice if Guardiola talked with Evra about those two games. Or the other two occasions when Guardiola's Bayern knocked him out of the Champions League against United and Juventus. If I was Pep, I would thank Evra for giving the ball away 25 yards from Juventus' goal in added time which led to a Bayern equalizer that took the game to extra time.

I said it then and I’ll say it now - Berbatov should’ve started that game 100%. The man was coming off the back of his best ever season, top scorer in the Prem and was oozing confidence. His skill set and attributes would’ve immensely helped us slow the game down a bit, and give Barcelona a way different dynamic to have to cope with. Like Rio said, we played into their hands but that was how we played at the time, even SAF admitted later on that leaving out Berba was one of his biggest regrets… a shame

People tend to forget when talking about those midfield three that, yes they were amazing, the best midfield three I've seen, but none of them would have been that great in a two. They had specific roles, like all midfields do now, which complemented each other. None of them were the complete package.

Agreed (maybe other than Iniesta who had everything IMO) and this is why I feel that Pep doesn't get enough credit for this team. He released great players, like Deco, in order to put in players with less pedigree who suited his style of play. Having the great players is one thing, but plenty of other teams have had superstars across the board and not been nearly as successful.

Fergie got the tactics wrong in that 2011 final. Why he chose to play a 2 man midfield of Giggs and Carrick, with Park and Valencia as the wide men against that Barca team baffles me. A 3 man midfield, with wingers who can tuck in with only Rooney up top would've been the better way to go. At least for the first 60 minutes. Then bring on reinforcements like Chicharito, Berbatov & Nani later on
